Love this movie, love the novel even more. It's one of my all time favorites actually only rating just a little below Persuasion which I rate extremely highly. MP has much more heart than Emma.

This version portrays Fanny quite differently to the original book (she's more spirited here whereas Fanny in the book comes across as a bit vapid and 'vanilla'). But I actually quite enjoy this Fanny - she's my idea of a good heroine. ^_^

i havent seen this version but from what i've seen in this trailer, and what im seeing in the comments, the 2007 itv version is much closer to the book.

The final scene of this (which I have seen) looks good, but Fanny isnt meant to be 'spirited' - shes basically the least spirited of all JA's heroines, and is quiet and shy. And lots of these scenes never happen in the book. ITV's is more accurate, although this looks good if you ignore the differences :)

I really like this as a movie but so much as Jane Austen's 'Mansfield Park'. Austen wrote Fanny Price to be a really quiet, sheltered character, not a 'spirited heroine'. Still, I enjoyed watching the movie =)

I'm just watching the BBC version of Mansfield Park (1983) and it is horrible, the acting, the cast, even the way the camera is moving and the camera they used. And please don't try to tell it's because the movie is old, it's just not true. This one seems to be better although is not very faithful to the book.

Frances O'Connor is so beautiful in this movie and she makes this movie much better to me. By the way I don't like Fanny at all, but this adaption made her more likable.

My private Problem, i don´t like love movies in which i cant look at the actors...and bcs of this i like this version more, than the 2007 version.

Although the 2007 version portraits the book much better, i rly dislike her fanny and edmund.

It amuses the crap out of me that Edmund and Fanny are first cousins and every "rewrite" or spin off or sequel to Jane Austen's novel changes their relationship to something less...controversial. LOL society is crazy - you love who you love and that's that :P

This adaptation was SO MUCH BETTER than the recent one with Billie Piper. Actually, there's no comparison! It's almost never mentioned anywhere and it's one of my all time favorite Austen adaptations. Just Beautiful!!!

Both take artistic liberties, which is tricky because in the book Fanny, to be frank, is really boring: she's sickly, never rises to the occasion and doesn't really make any mistakes. Unlike Elizabeth or Emma, the heroine doesn't have a journey. Purists to the novel think the adaptations are wrong, but I think it makes her more engaging.

And this version is FAR superior to the Billie Piper version, which is dreadful even if you haven't read the book.

Thanks for that. I've actually watched it since. Really enjoyed it. Thought it was a million times better than the Billie Piper version. Billie was far too wild and tomboyish to play a heroine. Really appreciated the way this one had all those witty one-liners: "selfishness should always be forgiven because there is no cure". very true, the 2007 remake was painful to watch, billie piper didnt do the character any justice in her dreadful portrayal of fanny.

the 1999 movie was a pleasant suprise and with great performances by all the actors.

Seems like it's a matter of personal taste - some like this version and some like the version with Billie Piper :) I would recommend watching them both and forming your own opinions (I personally liked this version better)
