A reminder, when they cast the Monkees, they cast two actors, and two musicians, in order to have legitimacy for the performances. Davey Jones and Mickey Dolenz were both actors, with long resumes before the Monkees, while Peter Tork and Michael Nesmith were both musicians of note (Tork often times played with Steven Stills, later part of Crosby Stills Nash and Young). Notice how Mickey and Davey were handed the less critical instruments and handled singing primarily.
@downix I donno If I'd count drums as being "less critical!" ;) It's said that Mickey had to take drum lessons to be able to fake playing drums for the TV shoots, but actually ended up becoming a pretty solid drummer in his own right (as evidenced here) Davy technically "auditioned" for the show, but found out later on that the show was built around him (a brit, which was gold during the British invasion). I dont think anyone involved with the show ever thought it would grow as big as it did.

IF you people do NOT like what you are seeing in these videos, it does NOT give you the right to slam them! Why are you here if you don't like it? Do you know how to hit an 'exit' key on your computer or phone? Get over it! This particular time was when they were in England, they were frustrated wtih each other and I think this was just before they stopped touring from their 'fall-out.' These guys are like brothers, they fight/fuss with each other but in the end, they make great music together!
Micky Dolenz always played drums, even as a kid. But note during the guitar solo, the lights dim way down so the guy off to the side is playing that - not Tork or Nesmith. If that's Jones in the woman-get up he looks gay.
Good live version, despite Davy's 'Elvis-izing" it. What the hell was with the crazy outfit?? Peter and Mike are just catatonic and Mickey is smirking. Musta been a tour to remember.
@Pacisdiligo I think he left his other outfit for this song back in the 90s (LOL) -- I think I'd prefer to see him in that tiger or leopard (or whatever it was) outfit than this one. This one was, I'm sure, something to make people laugh with maybe? I don't know.
Mickey and Davey seem to be the only ones having fun. I love the Monkees original recordings, but live....well, not so much. I can see why this was a debacle and this seemed like an ill-fated reunion. When they came to Austin on this tour, there was a chance I was going to open for them with the band I was in. It didn't happen, and I was disappointed, as I would have LOVED to have met them!
Think Davy dressed to annoy the rest of the group , He probably hated but had to continue touring - they were fighting and having a lot of problems w/ one another !!!
I have never seen this video. I have always been a Monkees fan. But I have to ask something. Was Davy having an identity crisis at this time? He looked like a cross between Elvis, and Elton.
At least it's got a pretty smokin' guitar solo. I think Glen Campbell (as a session guitarist) played the solos on the original recording. Anybody know for sure?
Actually, by this point, they were playing their own instruments, because of the criticism that you seem to believe. In fact, their third album, headquarters, they made sure that they played, (to quote Mickey,) "every @&#$*! note!" Plus, who was it that played in their concert tour in 1967? Look at the performance in "Head" of "Circle Sky:" that was a live recording. Mike was already an accomplished musician as was Peter before the show. Mickey, although was still a novice at drums...
Actually, yes it was, and, yes he can! He has always been able to. When they put out the cattle call for the band, they asked for actors that can sing, or musicians that can act. Nesmith was a musician that could act, as was Tork. However, at first they didn't want them to actually play, but, you know how these kinds of things can take off.
(cont.) had gone through one year of intense drum training before the show started, just to be ready for it, (there's a method actor for you!) They wanted to play in studio, but Don Kirshcner wanted to do the "Nsync" thing with them: no creative control. He wanted puppets, and the band revolted against him. There is a documentary here called "True Hollywood Stories: the Monkees" that tells all about this, interviewing them as it went. Check it out if you want to know more about this band.
He was a good guitar player even when they started out. Mike actually had talent. The other guys could sing so between them and the great sessions musicians, these guys were born...In All I still love their music just as much as the other 60's music.
This is one of Boyce and Harts best songs I think Mike Nesmith loathing of the song was jealousy about not being able to just do what they wanted to do.
OH MY GOD ....... davy is so hot dressed as elvis i like it thank you for uploarding this it is great and and i love him..... i think the davy/elvis version is great
@bloggo1 Yes they can -- I've seen them in concert right by the stage. If anyone thinks they can't, they should go up to one of them, ask them to pick up a guitar and play them a song. They put on a great show!
I'm puzzled by Davy's Elvis-y costume and wish he were singing the song more like he did on the original recordings, but maybe he was just trying to put on a good show and liven things up? His energy is great. The others do look a bit uncomfortable. Then again, if he wanted to do it that way, why not?
( no "20"... ¡¡ignorante!! ) y otra cosa... decrépitos, público, y después se escriben con un tilde. Parece que usted capta muy poco...Los Monkees es un grupo de músicos de corazón joven, y así serán siempre.

Yeah know Mickey is doing very well on those drums. It looks really easy. IT ISN'T. If the drummer is off then it throws the whole tune out of wack. Mistakes can happen so the drummer has to catch himself sometimes. Mickey had that fairly tight.
c'mon, mike, can't u at least crack a smile? no? well, that was a tottal face-melting gutair solo, anyway. in the music vid for daily nightly (i don't know if any1 has it posted, i own it) mike didn't move one inch the whole time. he just sat there and watched mickey play the keyboard
Nesmith hates this song. Play find the Nez, while the song plays. At least his back isn't turned in this one. That was his typical stance during Valleri.
damned............what memories........
