Warren had great wit. He wrote alot of sardonically funny songs. Not all of his tunes were about death, like so many people think. Too bad. Zevon was a master in any lyrical category.
Warren was brilliant. Able to write a funny parody on any topic. This song just reinforces the vastness of his subect matter. Truly the best rock lyricist of the 20th century. A phenomenal sense of humor. Sometimes dark, but always makes you think about his words, and their meaning in his songs.
its people like u who make the world go round unlike people who like stupid things like justin beiber whos words cant even be called lyrics and dont have any mening
zevon really had some feelin behind the druds and beer
If you told me someone wrote a really good song about a gorilla in a zoo, I would say "yah, right, no way!" Then you tell me it was Zevon, and I would say, Oh, well of course he did!!!!
@JustPlainDB You are right I did not forget to credit dave for it I didnt remember who said it, its a great line, has stuck in my mind for all these years.
To say this song is addictive is an understatement. I first heard it in 1981 in the apartment below mine. I was a student at the time, and had quite a hang over. I knew it was Warren Zevon but that was all I knew. I never got to ask my neighbor what the song was called. Over the next 28 years I searched high and low for this song, with no luck, Until tonight. Thank you for the post, its now part of my "Favorites"!
So i work at an Arby's and lately we have working with a lot of new guys and the new thing to do while we are closing is to put this song on repeat and seeing how long it takes for the new guy to freak out, its awesome, the one kid didn't even say anything just started singing along after like the 3rd or 4th time thru
you were absolutely right...I loved this songs when I was a teen...long long time ago.. I was hoping to find a cover or a Warren live performance but I did not find...
This one is a nice gift you did to all of us... thank you

Zevon is right up there with Fats Waller and Zappa in terms of amazing lyricists.

@whyitsfunny Warren has to be the only guy to use the word brucellosis in a song.

It takes a real musician to not take themselves too seriously and make fun and humorous songs such as this one. Mr. Zevon, you are greatly missed.

Such a great, all-time classic, spot-on satire, yet no-one's heard of it.

Song is addictive. Once you hear it stays in your head. Backing vocals by Don Henley and J.D. Souther are pretty good too.
