Thanks for this great video (and all your other great Marilyn videos). Where did you get the colour footage of Dean relaxing (at 0:12)? If it was from a documentary can you tell me which one?.. Thanks..
Dean was @ best an above average actor....maybe he'd have improved in time but the reality is like Manroe his fame and iconic status was elevated by the fact the he died so young...dying young does 2 things
1- you're forever young in image
2-you're errors and short-comings are brushed aside!
@su79er Good point.. but don't you find it interesting that there are so many other actors/artists who met an early and tragic demise and never reach iconic status? Part of the reason they become so mythologized is they grip some part of the the collective unconscious in a way that others cannot.. it's that mysterious quality, indefinable. Some call it the x-factor, Star quality, charisma.. :o)
@su79er maybe he was an icon because he died so soon or maybe he was& is an icon b/c he wasn't just an above avg actor, he was an incredible one. In only 3 credited movies his acting abilities& how he portrayed his characters influenced many of the actors today In the movies that he played he helped liberate teenagers something that wasn't done at that time Like he said".. If he can live on after he's died, then maybe he was a great man.." so maybe James Dean was a great man. To me he was.
@su79er I don't agree... the reason why Dean and Monroe are still THE icons of the film-industry is because they were years ahead of their time... they both still look like they could be alive today... even their acting is modern and fresh, and not like the over-dramatized acting that you see with actors from their time... I for one can not take my eyes off both of them whenever I see them on the screen...

How could Marilyn Monroe be an usherette at East of Eden when she was in Ladies of the Chorus in 1948? SHe was already a big star at Twentieth Century Fox, by the time East of Eden came out.
@3prettyvacant James studied for a short time at the Actor's Studio. Elia Kazan (a friend of Marilyn) directed East of Eden was a founding member of the Actors Studio (1947). Strasberg took over the A.S. eventually, and Marilyn became his devoted student. She WAS a huge star by then, but had abandoned Hollywood to exert more power over her career. She volunteered to usherette for E.of E. to raise funds for the Actors Studio. Google Marilyn Monroe East of Eden Usherette and you'll find the photos
@ an earlier comment: "He could be a little distrubing at times...." He awas always disturbing. in his looks, in his attitude, etc....therein lied his magic
@beepollen1 That was a letter he wrote to his New York girlfriend,Barbara Glenn talking about how he didn't like it in L.A and couldn't wait to get back to New York,i think it was around the time he was doing East Of Eden.
@beepollen1 I just ran the video and it played all the way through. Perhaps it's your connection or browser? Keep me posted. Thanks for the heads up! :D
on youtube there is the fantastic documentry about him made in 1957, he was so lonley most of his life and just when he started to feel good about himself he got into the head on collision. i cried at the end. but hes timeless.
I've been a huge fan of James Dean since i was 12,i'm 24 now and i collect as many books, videos, photos, dvds etc as i can, most people my age who i talk to don't even know who he is,but i feel a connection to him, there will never be anyone like him again.
I don't mean to sound disgusting or offend anybody, but if i had one wish it would be to make love to james dean:) he looked like he was good in bed:) Sex on legs! I think most women would say the same. He was gorgous and seemed like such a interesting soul:) a girls dream.
@MrSarah150 I'm not sure.. but I THINK it was from "Biography" channel's documentary on James. It's footage from one of his rare TV appearances. He had a few before he started doing films. You might be able to find it goggleing "James Dean TV appearances" or something like that... I'm sorry I don't have the exact title.
Dude! They say that he died at age 24,is that true? And in the first picture....he had make up on or what? I mean, I am 25 y/o and look so much younger than him!
@diegocool20 yea he died young & no its not make up...he had bags under his eyes cuz he was a huge insomniac...hed hop on his motorcycle in the middle of the night and just ride...
The reason people know him, that I know at least, was because of his role is Rebel Without A Cause. They all say it was because he was the first actor to really portray the rebellious teenager back then, that's why his movie lasted. Sure, the death brought him more fame, it just kind of made him a legend. But I think he was an amazing actor and even though I'm only 17, RWAC is one of my alltime favorite movies.
When he wore his glasses it really changed his appearence- I've read he was actually nearsighted, and had a hard time seeing the other actors up close on stage & behind the camera.
Some comments here disturbing and very shallow minded; jeese Dean is not for you. Spoiled,? He was raised on a farm in Indiana by his aunt and uncle, mom died when a kid, dad out of pic. upper class? get some life experience. Parents not affected by the Depression? Everyone was. Those on farms may have had an advantage to a degree more than city dwellers. Rebellious? General term. He was artistic. Best bio "James Dean the Mutant King" though I think it would be over your heads.
@werobanks Thanks for your thoughtful comment! I present this material with the utmost respect. James Dean was a fascinating individual and a true genius. I'm amazed at how much interest he still generates. As a matter of fact, it seems the interest in him is rising! I have the book you speak of. I hope more people take the time to read about the people on my channel and dig a little deeper. Warmest regards to you! :o)
@werobanks There is an interview with Marcus Winslow Jr / Markie, James Dean s first cousin that sated his clothes that he was known to wear, suposely because of Brando or to rebel.....wrong. It s what Jim always liked to wear long before going to Ca. in 1949, where Jim went to colege for a while. I love the rare interviews with his cousin Markie who never bad mounths anyone but tells about his cousin just streight matter of fact memories and family knowelge.

@cellardoor199991 You know I said the exact same thing. Although James Dean was known for his good looks. To me he always looked much older than his 24 years. He did look like someone in his forties. I guess that's what hard living will do to you. The first picture with those bags under his eyes would make you question his age. I'm new to the James Dean phenomenon. His untimely death happened long before my time. I just recently became fascinated with his story and his life.
@exxodus29 Yep. His life was hard because he made it that way. Like I said he wasn't involved in WW2 and he wasn't affected by the Depression(most people at that time were). He was always upper class. His parents divorced but I know thousands of others w/ the same situation and turned out fine. He wasn't the best actor but he's known for his early death which is sad because that has nothing to do w/ merit or hard work.
@cellardoor199991 Well, I'm fairly new to the whole James Dean phenomenon. I just started taking an interest in him this year. Because I kept hearing his name come up. I finally asked myself who is this guy and why are people talking about him? I was surprised to learn he's been dead for 55 years. It'll be 55 years next month. So I began to do research on him. I became fascinated with his story, his life, and death. Now I consider myself a fan. He died decades before my time. Yet he lives on!
@cellardoor199991 Pardon me, James Dean s parents did NOT divorce, his mom died of cancer when Jimmy was nine years old. And his dad wasnt in the picture after that until Jimmy stayed with him when he started college. And he is know for his talent, many tried to imate him thru the years but there is only ONE James Dean and you really miss the mark when it come to James Dean
I watched the James Dean movie played by James Franco and I cannot believe how much they look alike, even the way he moved and talked and smiled. Franco did an amazing job.
@philillie No. his memory lives! For as long as there are uncaring fathers and children orphaned of mothers and unloving relatives, there will always be James Deans in this world! And his star will forever shine as a beacon both for the detractors and for\ those hapless victims!
@Nonie46 His Aunt AND Uncle loved him very much. His little cousin Markie was like a brother to him. YES, his dad was out of the picture untill James was going to college but dont blame the rest of the realitves for what the dad did. There will always be JAMES DEAN as long as people can reconize TALENT.
TRY THIS IF YOU WANT REAL EMOTION. Open two tabs (both on youtube) and on one play a Clair De Lune on Piano, meanwhile watch this video with the sound muted so all you hear is Clair De Lune playing in the background. It's tragedy.
james dean - all his faults, his beauty, everything that made people hate him, his childish behavior, his recklessness, his compassion, and his passion...i love it all.
@OldHollywoodFan the pictures were painted of them together, so they arent real. or so i think, i have a picture of her laying on a couch and him sitting beside her
Curious if Dean & Marilyn ever met- not much to go on other than hearsay & the late Shelley Winter's 2nd biography(she was Marilyn's roommate in early '50's). Seems to have been only 1 or 2 casual meetings with other actors/directors at pre-screenings. In any event Dean was younger than Marilyn(and immature)- she preferred older men.
so if you got the racing footage from the biography channel, i assume you got the footage of the letter. i just wondering which biography went that close to his real letters and such.
haha, this might be much, but do you remember what they were saying about the letters? haha they went close on the 'i want to die' part for a reason i guess. haha anyways, thanks!
disturbing, perhaps yes but it gives us an insight to what james was really feeling and going through.
god i'm completely fascinated with him. he seemed like such a deep character, it's just a shame they're are so few like him. i would do anything to go back in time and meet him, i can relate to him.
i never really truly understood the hype about james until i watched east of eden and then started looking him up on the internet, gaining better knowledge of him. i'm obsessed!
Fine vid Bella! Did James ever meet Marilyn? i have not seen a photo of them together or elvis and marilyn together!.Love the way you put ya vids together and now others are tring to cash in on all your hard work! TWITS
@SakyAmadeusMozart He was a GLORIOUS man! Just amazing. I got the racing footage from a documentary.... I bet there's more of it out there, but that's all I could find. Sadly for us, Jimmy wasn't around long enough for us to amass tons of candid footage of him. :*( It's from the Biography Channel's set 'Mavericks' .. it includes Brando, Dean, Depp & McQueen. Have a great week! :o)
@sublime1marilyn I had seen that footage on James Dean The First American Teenager. I have additional footage on VHS that shows him racing his Porsche 356. Great video, by the way!
@LoisDScully yeah his name is John Angelo an old actor and professor who acted in many movies with Marlon Brando , sang with SInatra and so on .. yeah , you will not find him on IMDB. and get this , he still lives in the same appartment him and jimmy shared in the 1951
@LoisDScully .... he said that it is true that dean did not shower and that he was rebelious and lived on the streets , also ... i am making a docummentary on all that and i will include and interview with John Gilmore too .
Thanks for this great video (and all your other great Marilyn videos). Where did you get the colour footage of Dean relaxing (at 0:12)? If it was from a documentary can you tell me which one?.. Thanks..

Nonie46 1 year ago

I thought James Dean And Marilyn Monroe met.
Because there are pictures of them together.
Or am I wrong? Haha!
Photoshopped or something? Lol.
Anyway I love the video!
I could die for James Dean. :)
Btw whats the song?

The disturbing letter at 0:23 was written to his New York girlfriend Barbara Glenn while drunk. He could be a little disturbing at times.

@gemini16th how do you know? i dont disbelieve you! but its so interesting!!
shialover777 1 year ago
@gemini16th And do you know why he wrote that (apart from the drunk thing) ? Thanks!

@gemini16th
disturbing, perhaps yes but it gives us an insight to what james was really feeling and going through.
god i'm completely fascinated with him. he seemed like such a deep character, it's just a shame they're are so few like him. i would do anything to go back in time and meet him, i can relate to him.
i never really truly understood the hype about james until i watched east of eden and then started looking him up on the internet, gaining better knowledge of him. i'm obsessed!

But where did you get the footage from racing?
SakyAmadeusMozart 1 year ago 4
