2012 is my 3rd year playing so obviously i can play barre chords but when i try to play past the 7 fret i can get enough pressure on the ''b'' ''e'' string espcally when im standing up... help please

Good tips. Using the capo on the third fret or so also helps as part of the problem is the string tension to the nut is highest when forming F and then so on to Bm. Electric guitars have lower string tension so if you have both you can feel less discouraged and feel like you are progressing by working on an electric for a while.

I can never seem to get barre chords down! I can barre every string but G and B. My index finger just won't press down on those, and I've tried moving and positioning my finger differently, but nothing works. Help please!

the B and the G strings mute when in barre them

but positioning the thumb directly behind the index finger helped me

you should try that :)

also press them with the side of the finger

I've played guitar for almost a year now, and the only thing I still cannot do is play a barre chord. My hands are so tiny, so once I get all of the strings held down by one finger, I can't reach with my other fingers to hold down the strings where I need to.

I actually have to try to turn the guitar to even attempt to reach, and I still can't reach properly to hold it down so it sounds the way that it should.

What would you suggest I do?

And a capo may help. But i dont think anyone's hands are that small :)

Hey I'm not sure if you have been asked this before or not but, when ever I play barre chords my wrist starts to really hurt am I just playing it wrong or do I just need to grit my teeth and play through the pain?? Thanks man. :)

@strongbad822 Try to change the neck position. Probably you are holding the guitar to low (especially when you're standing)

And try to hold guitar a little bit diagonal to your body from back to front, not sideways. It helps me. (Like holding a rifle)

Marty, you are an awesome instructor. One thing that helps me is to form my open chords with my middle, ring, and pinky finger. Then all you have to do is get used to dropping your index finger. The strength needed to make it sound good is what is perplexing to me. Some artists make it look effortless, but that is not what I have found.

I have a question, I can play the barre chord perfectly on my friends guitar but I cant play it on my guitar. The only difference in our guitars is that hers can be hooked up into an amp and her strings are much easier to play on. Is it me or my guitar?

It might actually be your guitar. If the action is higher on your guitar than hers, then it could be that. But it could be a matter of string gauge as well. If you're on mediums rather than lights, that can be a little tougher on the fingers. Maybe try some lighter gauge strings.

@papan1990 You'll get there. Play the song Teenage Kicks by the Undertones. It's all barre chords. Play it once a day and within a week/2 weeks you should have barre chords perfected . Worked for me and I have small fingers too. Good luck :)

Marty helps alot trust me! got a guitar 2 yrs ago, only played once in awhile cause it was confusing to me. I was like what did I get myself into! now I am playin at least a hour a day after listening to marty's lessons and I am way better than when I 1st started out. just never give up ever. some chords are hard but then 1 day u wake up and you can just play um! trust me I just turned 28 today and never even picked up a guitar until 2 years ago and now I can play basic songs! Marty & Tony, I´d like to add on to your ideas:

- as Tony said, do a press, play once, reduce press until it still sounds ok and play again. Then take you chord form away and just check out the bar for a clear sound. Some mistakes in the bar may be hidden/covered behind the chord shape you are using, but pop up with a different chord....
