To whoever made this video thank you. Never thought that spokes would be the answer to fixing my bike. I have the spoke isolation down to 4 spokes. Just needs some more fin tuning.
What do you do if a spoke nipple is stripped and your tool can no longer grip onto it? The metal on mine seems to be really soft and now I have a buckled wheel wheel with 3 nipples that I cant adjust any more. Does this mean I have to re-build the wheel?
@elstado1 If you remove the tension from those spokes with the stripped nipples, you should be able to easily unscrew and replace the damaged parts. You can either: 1) Cut the offending spokes (use a pair of tin snips or, if you don't have that, you can use a hacksaw blade). 2) Unscrew the nipples on the opposite side of the rim. The tension will be relieved and you can unscrew spokes from the nipples. Replace spokes with ones that are the same length and install them with new nipples.
sorry, another post, the wheels i have are shimano rs10...the rear wheel has a slight wobble but no more than 2mm i just wanted to practice this and make it as straight as possible. thanks mike!
is it the same thing when truing a wheel with a tire on and without? i dont have a stand but wanted to know if i should take off my tire; if the pressure of the tube will influence the truing of the wheel.
also does it matter which side you are referencing the brake pad? is this the same with both front and rear wheel truing?
Vertical truing is done by tightening or loosening spokes in pairs, using spokes that are next to each other. Working this way maintains lateral true. Work in half to full turn increments, and only work in the section where the wheel is out. Don't worry about what's happening on the opposite side of the wheel.
I LOVE IntownBicycles. This guy is fantastic. Thanks to him, last night when other youtube videos made me frustrated and made my problems worse, Mike's videos basically gave me the information I needed to tune up both my front and rear derailleurs. This evening I'll be working on truing the wheels. Thanks Mike!!!
these are all fucking wrong, you have to distension all the spokes first, then do the tension not by turning that shit 4 times but only 1 time clock wise and equally 1 time anti on the other side or less to tune until you get to the point and do the center hub regularly, and do a stress free wheel final step and check again, these video is total shit.
My entire hub is shifted to one side.. I can clearly see the spokes looking down the rim from one side and from the other they aren't visible at all... can this type of bend be fixed?
@ThEfRiStALiAS No, it was fixable! Got it over to the local store and the fixed it. Something about the plate thing... didn't understand the technical term, but they released the tension to one side of the spokes only. It was pulling the rim of center. ;)
Also: it is recommended that after you true the wheel the 1st time, to "stress" all the spokes to get the nipples to settle in, then true it again. Stressing means squeezing (hard enough, but not TOO hard) the spokes in pairs around the whole rim, on each side of the rim. If you don't stress them after truing the 1st time, the rim may become slightly misaligned again after riding it, so you might as well do it before riding.
This video does NOT contain good instructions for truing a wheel. Spokes must be tightened and loosened in pairs or groups or your wheel will go out of round.
Hi, and thanks for the advice, what I would like to know is how do I BALANCE a wheel? The air valve adds weight to one side of the wheel causing a pulsing which is more noticeable at higher speeds. is there a simple weight that can be attached on the other side of the wheel (other than bubble gum)?
@hamballsario you could try this, get an old inner tube and cut small pieces of it and put them between the good inner tube and tyre. should balance things out :)
Ayy someone help me out. What i did was take out all the spokes off the rim and then for the rim i just put weight on it to straighten in out Good idea?
gud job dude now i can fix my bike this summer i warped my rim so i guess i can jus actually twist some nipples and get everything back to normal (somewhat)
Actually, you need to decrease the spoke tension on either side of the broken spoke. It'll be fairly obvious when you look at it, or certainly when you start turning spoke nipples.
The BEST way to know if the spoke tension is too tight or too low to measure it with a tension meter. Otherwise, one develops a feel for it after a while by squeezing the spokes with your hands. You can also get a feel for the tension by how much force is required to turn the spoke nipple. If the spoke nipples are rounding off when you turn them, then the tension is way to high. Conversely, if they turn with no effort, the spoke tension is way to low.
@IntownBicycles So you're saying when a spoke breaks you substitute the lack of tension in that particular spot by increasing the tension in the neighboring spokes?
@IntownBicycles So your saying that when one of the spokes on a bicycle wheel breaks then you temporarily substitute the lack tension by tightening the nipples on the neighboring spokes?
Ah finally a video that truly demonstrates UP CLOSE the function of a spoke and nipple. Thankyou thankyou thankyou!
For some reason, all over the web on multiple sites, they tell you how to "tighten" or "loosen" the spokes, but never tell you from what part of the wheel you're looking at when turning "clockwise". This video (at time index 31s) answers that question.
That is excellent - these types of videos showing people how to, are an amazing source of information, and it is great that people are willing to share their skills. CHEERS.
I've been watching all the truing tutoria videos on YT and this is definitely the BEST!!!! Let me ask you, what if the wheel goes up and down. is it repairable? thanks!!!
