  • milgrim's experiments anyone?.....i want intelligence.

  • 03.15-03.47 in the film was the bit in the book that really disturbed me. With Winston sobbing quietly in the background...This is excellent TV

  • I´m living this. 1984 is now.

  • THERE ARE FOUR LIGHTS! Oh wait, wrong show...

  • love andre morell in this he was great as quatermass too

  • andre morell playing a great roll loved him in quatermass and the pit

  • I'm not sure that 1984 speaks to religion, but in fascist states where religion is banned the point is to channel religious passion towards adoration of the state, especially when there is a figurehead, like BB here. North Korea's idol is their long-dead leader. It's just like now when creationists are taught to parrot that scientists are all evil liers, and when Muslims declare submission is the only true freedom

  • the party is cruel but @ least its honest about itself

  • I concur with AnthonyJDBurns.

  • What he says at 05:46 is truly harrowing!

  • If 1984 was intended as an attack on Christianity as well (as suggested in a post on an earlier episode) then it might be rather counter-productive. O'Brien's speech here - declaring that the aim of the Party is power for its own sake - is a secular version of Satan's claim in Paradise Lost that "It is better to rule in Hell than serve in Heaven." Come to think of it, C S Lewis anticipated Orwell writing about technological Hell on Earth in That Hideous Strength (1945).

  • I see a penetrating lampoon about 'The Church'-the "party" & 'God'-"Big Brother" in the book & this movie.

  • then why is religion one of the listed crimes? why does it matter anyway. Interpret it how you want.

  • clearly, religion would be a form of unproductive thought and in that sense, even destructive to the party.

  • @AnthonyJDBurns Owell hated Socialism or any other sys that is against the INDIVIDUAL and this also includes society based on Theology as well. Remember the Christian Inquest? Martin Luther had said that had he been around when Coper. came up with the idea that the Earth orbits the sun, he would have had Coper burned at the stake. Look what extremists did to Galieo or the extremist muslims..cs lewis is a jerk and a commie lover.

  • @rangeclerk Orwell was a self-described socialist. What he deplored was totalitarianism in any form - he opposed fascism and Stalinism (not the same as opposing communism and certainly far from opposing socialism). Socialism does not oppose the indivdual. It values all individuals equally - hence educating and providing health care to all rather than basing such necessities on only those who are financially successful. 1984 depicts the evils of totalitarianism, not of socialism.

  • Truly frightening...When you realise that such people as O'Brien and such places as '1984' exist today and now..This is really harrowing.
