That said, I totally agree. As an English teacher for more than 30 years, I wish I could get that message through to former students who seem almost afraid to speak to me when we meet now - I care more about what you have to say than how you say it.
Mr. Mali, your poetry - all of it I have experienced thus far - touches me as no other poetry has since I first read Robert Frost and found a kindred spirit. I believe I've found another
I like this poem because I once met Mr. Mali at a returaunt I used to work at and was totally embarresingly struddering and spellbound for this exact reason.
I had a conversation with someone on youtube once. My english wasn't perfect and he made sure to let me know that. I must admit he used big words and criticized my poor english skills. Now when I look back that person was arrogant he took the knowledge that he was better at using english than me and used it to ridicule me. After seeing this I now know that he wasn't the victor in our conversation, I was. I care more about what people say whether the grammar is wrong.
@straightjacket510 Very well said, my friend. I hate to admit having been a "grammar Nazi" in the past, but you get your point across so well, that I don't think it matters, personally! And having taken some harsh criticism on YouTube myself, I'm learning that there will always be critics, but ultimately, I can be the bigger person.
When i was a kid, i used to correct the notes my friends passed me. As a teen, I would wince when people used incorrect grammar and correct them. Now I force myself to simply be open to receive the point the person is trying to make. My relationships have definitely improved.
@globulin if that's true then I retract my comment . @nvyseal199 just because its in a dictionary that doesn't make it proper English which I assumed mr Mali is quite good at
I correct grammar and spelling all the time. I can't read something if those two elements are messed up, but I can understand that people aren't perfect. The only thing that really gets on my nerves is pronunciation and making up words. I'm fine when people use a real word in the wrong place (because at least they can learn the meaning of the word and learn where to use it), but making up words to seem smart doesn't work for me.
This is the best poem of all. I always correct the grammar of other people when they speak, and people often say that I'm intimidating because of how eloquently I speak. But this...this poem is awesome.
I'm 17 years old and my english literature teacher incessantly corrects my grammar mistakes, pronunciation and what not when I speak to her which sometimes gets me down. I became cautious of the words I choose especially when I speak to her and sometimes that makes me stutter a bit. But this poem that Taylor Mali read is inspiring to me and makes me laugh.
Being a person who is always correcting others' grammar, I fully appreciate this poem. Just because I am strict when it comes to the written rules of communication, people often feel intimidated talking to me face to face, but really there is no need. ^_^
His noun and pronoun didn't agree with each other when he said "in their left eye." Their is plural and eye is singular. I just thought I should point that out since he said that he corrects grammar.
@zengrenouille 'Their' can be singular or plural, because it's neuter i.e. ungendered and neither passive nor active. In this case it was used because the sex of the person was unknown or could have been either, so 'he' or 'she' would have made less sense in context.
@Fitchsticks That's absolutely incorrect. People just accept the use of their as singular, but it is not correct to use it in the singular form. It should be his or her. It is also perfectly acceptable to just say his when there is an unknown gender, but our society has pretty much exorcised that in the name of feminism.
There is such a thing as "singular they". It's non-gender specific and commonly used as a term to categorize both. Anyone who thinks "their" ideas are the only correct ideas should google it.
