  • I visited a few games while in Tampa on business. Though the ballpark is not for pictures, I go to baseball for the game itself. If you want to pay for a view of water, go to a lake....it is free! And I was dying from the heat exhaustion walks from the car to the ballpark. And once I was inside, I didn't care how the place looked. It felt so good in that A/C. So remember this..if they want to draw visitors, the visitors will consider the no A/C a factor. ESPN in a hotel is usually free.

  • The plan was abandoned anyway. That's ashame cause the stadium looked nice

  • This plan was abandoned anyway, but it looked awesome

  • where are they going to get all the people to fill those seats

...........watching the game tonight and the Trop is 2/3 empty !!

    signed

    Redsox fan

  • to bad

  • lol i kno thts cool hey im sitting nxt 2 evan longoria and carl crawford

  • lol i kno thts cool hey im sitting nxt 2 evan longoria and carl crawford

  • I was recently on vacation in FL, so I went to the Rays opening day game. Tropicana is a hole. It doesnt even feel like a baseball game is supossed to. Terrible parking, and it looked all hazy on the field, like a fog lingering in the dome. However, the fans were great and the game was fun.

It does not appear this new stadium will be built, though.

  • Rays haven't done anything for St Pete and they have ruined the Thunderdome. Progress in downtown is due to the city dressing up the Central Ave area in anticipation of a baseball benefit. The baseball benefit never happened. More proof that kissing rich people's asses doesn't make you money, it just gets shit on your face. Downtown St Pete makes more peripheral money off any decent rock concert than it does a baseball game, because music fans don't race to their cars and back to Pinellas Park.

  • The Trop is so much better

  • reality will keep this from happening...

  • Its not like the rays get fans to their stadium anyway. Why even bother making a new stadium? Try moving to another city where fans will actually show up. Rays "fans" are a joke. I mean, the rays get to the WS, and the year after the trop is still a ghost town, even when the rays were in a playoff race.

  • It's a good plan but not the rays I think I may speak for the rest of Florida residents air conditioning is much appreciated and not all sweaty and wet

  • tropicana is the best! come on people AIR CONDITIONING!!! NO SUNBURN!!!

  • what sucks is most of us rays fans love the Trop there is nothing wrong with not to mention our weather is to unpredictable for an outdoor park

  • It going to seat 34000 (Only 4000 less than boston[and more than Oakland technically] with much less demand and LF seats could easily be added) I'm sure it will have a scoreboard somewhere it just isnt in the picture and dugouts. This stadium would catapult the rays from the worst stadium left in baseball to one of the best and definately better than the ugly monstrousity being built in Miami

  • a very close seating bowl, non-steep and small upperdeck, relatively few luxury suites(a good thing, look how rediculus the 3rd base side of Cleveland looks)a small intimate outfield seating, and great views of the city like PNC park in Pittsburgh, and an innovative retractable roof design to keep out sun on hot days or rain on wet ones while still giving the park an open feeling similar to saefco field in seattle.

  • If this stadium ever gets built it will be one of the most innovative and interesting stadiums in the world. It would be completely unique among MLB stadiums while combining some of the best features of other great parks. Built downtown to create a better atmosphere like most new parks, with the modern look of the exterior and the sun shade of Kaufman stadium in KC, the bay in right field like ATnT in San Fran(itll probably be filled with kayakers too),

  • I'm a Twins fan and we opened up our new stadium after being in the Metrodome for too many years. I wish all the Rays fans and the Rays team all the best in getting their new stadium.

  • To the Devil Rays fans from a Twins fan. I hope your city, fans and team do get your new stadium. Teams like ours have a harder time with the politics that keep the fans and the team waiting and waiting for years before the red tape is parted before construction can begin.

I wish Tampa Bay all the best in getting the stadium they deserve. They've definitely waited long enough and sure do deserve it.

    All the best,

    Twinsfan1

  • needs more seats

  • Plans failed for the stadium

  • too small compare to other ballparks

  • 110 times better than Tropacana Field

  • there's got to be only 25,000 seats in that thing

  • This is the stupidest looking thing I've ever seen...well next to Shea Stadium.

I speak for anybody who's ever gone to a Rays game in the summer....AIR CONDITIONING IS A MUST!!!

  • thats a disgusting stadium you guys should be glad they dont build it

  • wow its like a minor league stadium

  • Says a fan of the team with the most decrepit stadium in american sports.

  • it doesn't cause minor league satiums don't look look like that

  • Where are the dugouts? That's pretty original that the players sit with the fans.

  • It reminds me of kauffman stadium in kansas city

  • sucks its not gonaa be built

  • look at the kid and his pep pep at 1:05

  • man there's barely any seats, all the seats are behind the players batting

  • thats the same roof concept they tried in Montreal. The Big "Owe". If they build it, it will rip.

  • What did they ever decide to do with this idea? Are they still interested in doing this? I haven't heard anything in ages about it.

  • tampa bays park now is just coping the old astrodome the only difference is that its slanted

  • Why the hell would they waste money on making a new stadium when the stadium we have now is not really all that old and is still pretty nice. Big waste of money

  • You will get a lot of boats.

But, it looks great. Can't wait to see my Rays play there!

  • when will this stadium open??

  • i think it is to open on 2012.

  • It won't. It was quickly shelved when the snobs who live in downtown St. Pete and the ignoramuses who oppose any new park protested. A commission of community leaders has been formed to make recommendations on new stadium location and building support in the community for a new stadium.

  • transparent roof? sweet

  • Not transparent. It's reels a retractable roof up over the stadium like a tent, leaving the end open but the field and seats covered.

  • this stadium looks badass

  • Is that some sort of retractable roof?

  • It's reels a retractable roof up over the stadium like a tent, leaving the end open but the field and seats covered.

  • the rays are not going to build this stadium.

They are currently looking at sites in Tampa and central Pinellas county. This stadium would have never worked because there are not enough parking spaces in Downtown St. Pete.

  • now this is the future of baseball and there stadiums

  • It's a little sketchy... HAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!

  • It's a little sketchy... HAHAHAHA!!!!!

  • Most you people are idiots. The weather would not be an issue, that's the whole points of the mast out past the outfield, you think it's just there for show? Do some research, it was designed to unfurl a covering so there would be no postponed games and you would still have a beautiful outdoor stadium with a great view of the bay.

  • wow this looks like a minor league stadium on the inside

  • no they wont

  • If you guys think the "trop" is actually a good stadium, you need to crawl out of your idiot holes and look around baseball. Domes suck! If they built this new thing, it would be the most unique park in all of the mlb, an architectural marvel, a beautiful place to watch baseball, and a fitting home for a team whose future is just looking up and up. I hope to god they build this thing. It would be amazing!

  • wow this stadium is pathetic. it will have less than 30,000 seats. I thought Fenways seat cap was bad, cant wait for this shit. though it does look nice, it looks like a minor league stadium with only about 25,000 seats.

  • rays are the bestt, sweet staadium

  • at least we don't hav 2 share our field with another team

  • why are marlin fans hatin on rays u should support them thier same state!! jeez i love the trop though

  • Whats the seating capacity for this stadium ?!?!

I dont hate the rays but this is an insult to rays fans! this is the way of the owners and developers saying well no one will attend regardless of postseason fuck it lets give em this. it looks more like a juiced up minor league stadium with the gay picnic area in the outfield... where the hell are the bleachers at least catch me a fuckin break ?!?!

  • keep tropicana field ive been going there forever i love the hell out of that place but the new stadium does look bad ass by the way marlins suck...

  • it looks really nice but i love the trop

  • The stadium is not in Tampa so it fails.

  • that looks amazing!!!

  • Looks like a Boring stadium for a boring team..

  • The overhang makes it almost look like one of the Japanese leauge stadiums

  • is that a retractable roof ???

  • Yes

  • It WILL be when a hurricane hits!

  • the rays stadium is empty all the bandwagon fans left and then rooted for the magic, too bad they lost now were will the bandwagoners go?

  • okk listen here wherever u are from the team there must suck and bad! because the rays are amazing and ur just jealous that its amazing here and not where u live. oh and ur just another bandwagon fan

  • Why no Scoreboard?

  • Comment removed

  • looks really nice, but i like the trop better!

  • that in all seriousness looks like a spring training field...but rays fans cant fill the trop so it shud be good

  • man the trop has like a bunch of ppl there and i think this will be awesome. it seems like a nice idea and i would love to see it come to life. i just got back from a game.

  • will i dont like it the dome is still better and for the love god it rains so much on the summer so like almost every game is going to be ppd

  • there not building it there anymore. i heard they were thinking about buiilding it on the FL state fairgrounds which probly would be best. cuz then theyd get more people going 2 week games then i can get season tickets. but i love the trop i wouldnt trade it for any of the other mlb parks

  • it looks a lot like Kauffman Stadium......

  • what makes you think it looks like kauffman stadium there's not even fountain in center

  • the stadium looks great on paper, but pepple forget that it RAINS everday in the summer. there would be rainouts all the time, the stadium would be wet all the time, and its HOT here in tampa bay. ide like a new stadium, but in florida a domes the way to go.

  • that big tower thingy with the cables looks wierd, it surves very little purpose, they should take it out. but the rest looks good

  • i luv the trop theres alota history ther and besides if they do build a new one will they put it in tampa so i dont have to go accross the damn bridge every time cuz its a bitch to get to

  • I don't get the cables running to the big structure out behind the fence. Like it's spiderman stadium or something? Or are you guys trying to build on the tradition of having cables, catwalks, and speakers hanging in the field of play. Forget the futuristic approach. Baseball is all about tradition. It looks more like a damn Sea World stadium to me. Put a freakin' water tank in there and lets see Shamu splash all the fans with his tail. Whatever.

  • theres like 10 people per game at the trop so why bother building another stdium?

  • The attendance is very low I heard today on DAE the average attendance is only about 20000 per game and the Trop holds about 45000. So at this time I can't see building a new stadium either. Bucsfan999 also has a good point.

  • Considering I am a Twins fan and we just built a new outdoor stadium that opens next year, I like looking atthese new stadiums and I actually like it and think it would be a good move for the Rays. The only thing against it is the outfield. It looks really empty and boring kind of like KC before they expanded it.

  • The Trop is fine. Spend money on the mass transit in Pin. Co

  • Looks like an over sized minor league park.

  • have to be serious here... that stadium doesnt look right.

  • i think it looks really nice , i live in miami we finnaly got our new stadium thats actually going to be located in miami , no more two hour drives ,

but first off im a baseball fan and i think every team should there stadium , but can some explain to me what that fish net thing is ?

  • Lol W T F!? - What a cheap looking stadium. Once again the Marlins... are and ALWAYS will be Florida's Team.

  • Finally! One guy who knows his stuff!

Kudos to you Brother! Go Fish!!!

  • not cool bro i love both the marlins and rays.

  • the marlins dont exactly have a great stadium, being a football venue and all.

  • dude get real the marlins suck what the hell have they done lately other than losing

  • won 2 World Series...

  • The Marlins were the first Baseball team in florida, so you my friend are correct!

  • maybe something like Safeco or the Rogers centre would benefit the Rays more? Florida weather is unpredictable most of the time. All I know is while I love the Trop, the Rays need the ability to open the roof to play out doors if weather permits.

  • yeah these new stadiums seem to be obsessed with the "open air feel". I also don't see how it feels enclosed with a retractable roof.

  • What does it seat 5k? That's about all that shows up to the games. haha

  • the stadium needs to be built in hillsborough county 20,000 fans between the days of monday-thursday is literally impossible in pinellas. if the lightning can get that many fans then imagine what the rays could get if they were closer to tampa. if the normal "12,000 real fans" are faithful then they will make the drive to the new stadium like we drive to tropicana field

  • spursdynasy shut up. The RAYS are bitchin!! the season just started dumb ass. We started the season playin hard ass teams so give us a break. cant say that about the Spurs they suck. I think the new stadium looks pretty cool, but I still like the Trop

  • The Spurs have won the NBA title in 1999, 2003, 2005, and 2007. How many titles did they Rays win at that time?

  • Rays stadium only needs a 10,000 capacity considering the team is back in last and the bandwagon jumpers are off the train. Rays are a joke!

  • We're only a month into the season.

  • your a joke fuck off

  • please your a joke tell whats your team

  • Why the hell does TB deserve a new stadium? Tropicana field is only 16 years old.

  • this thing looks like a spirit-posessed sailboat, that can seat 32,000 people. if it were'nt for that poor excuse of a "retractable" roof, it might be a nice ballpark. this thing will never get off the ground.

  • I like some aspects of this design like the original designs and natural feel, but over-all this looks too much like a minor league stadium. It seems to open and a little dull. I'm a big fan of the new Minnesota Twins stadium design by the same company though.

  • I like it. The Rays need a venue to match their level of play. Moreover, it would revitalize downtown St. Pete. and create thousands of jobs.

  • How would it create thousands of jobs?

  • I don't know, maybe CONSTRUCTION!

  • Nice Stadium. Has about 35,000 seats plus room for a few thousand on the grass in the outfield.

  • when is it happening?

  • It should be ready for the 2012 season, it's going to cost 450 million.

  • It's on hold. It will not be ready for 2012.

  • Where are they looking to open the new stadium, and why it is, it on hold.

  • Too bad the world will end before its built if it it stays on hold .12.21.12

  • Is this for real? I was not aware that the Rays were getting a new stadium... it sure doesn't look like your typical MLB park... still is nice though.

  • They are getting the new stadium yet this is just a plan of what it would look like if the budget comes through

  • i actually just read the website, it s actually will have 34000 seat and will have a retractable roof

  • that is a pretty nice layout. especially for florida and the location, but you people are right it needs right field seats, and suites, that grass in the outfield does look like seating room though, i think it'll be a good stadium, but let's face it now; that will mark an era without indoor mlb stadiums

  • "but let's face it now; that will mark an era without indoor mlb stadiums " and that's bad thing??

  • Looks like a cross between Kaufman Stadium and Olympic Stadium.

  • Ew.

i dont want them to take the trop away

  • wow this is weird, like texasboy040 said there are like no suites, not much room for a concourse, no place 2 sit in the outfield, this looks like a minor league stadium or an amuzment park. Its not much of an MLB ballpark its a joke, its cool looking but thats all, it wont become a classic, but I guess the Rays can pull that off since theyre in Florida and no1 even goes 2 their games even though they went to the World Serie. oh an how will they work out the A/C lol what idiots.

  • Educate yourself before making a comment. The stadium was pulled off the ballot a year ago and a commission is researching alternative sites including renovating the trop or a retractable roof. Regarding attendance - 1.8 million went to the regular season games and 2+million including playoffs. They averaged 22,300 per game in 2008 which is a 30% increase. Not bad considering they had NEVER been better than dead last and 70% of the residents here are transplants. Your comment is ignorant

  • if there tampa bay rays how come they play in st pete

  • The Tampa Bay Area is made up of three cities Tampa, St. Petersburg, and Clearwater

  • a larger version of Charloote Sports Park

    the spring home of Rays

  • While I may be a Met fan, I can say that looks amazing. It looks like a spring training stadium, but better. It's really unique, unlike most other stadiums.

  • It would actually have 30,000 seats and room for about 5,000 to sit on grass in the outfield.

  • it looks like a minor leageu double AA stadium!!!

  • well it looks 10 times better than the trop!!

  • no way the trop will all ways going to be the best

  • its a nice ballpark, i hope it works out for them

  • This ballpark kinda reminds me of exhibition stadium the old home of the blue jays in the 1980's

  • To be honest, this looks like a minor league stadium! Doesn't look like there are any suites, hardly any outfield seats. Small sized grandstand in comparison to others in the MLB. Not impressive.

  • It looks interesting, but a bit plain. They need a giant scoreboard or something.

  • the design of the whole place is sooooo expensive tht they cant afford a giant scoreboard! lol

  • dvabel1 if i remembered this correctly from a magazine i read that the will not have any seating in the outfield so the hidden flood walls could seal off the park

    from a storm.

  • The overall layout seems very similar to Tropicana Field. The only noticeable difference I see is that the seats are angled in towards the infield, and (obviously) theres no roof.

However, this is merely a possible design, and isn't enough to make a real prediction on how the stadium will look.

  • if they r going to do that they need more seats in the outfield

  • if the stadium is in st.petersburg the team should be called st.petersburg rays not tampa bay rays

  • They are called the Tampa Bay Rays because they play in the Tampa Bay region. Actually, they play in Saint Pete's now, the team would simply be moving downtown.

Also, the Tampa Bay Lighting play in St. Petersburg...

Not only that, but the actual city is not called Tampa Bay, it's simply Tampa. Tampa Bay is the term used to define the major body of water within the region and the region itself.

  • That's too hard too say. Plus, nobody outside of the area has really heard of St. Petersburg.

  • When are they going to get that park

  • whats that net thing over the field, and it looks pretty small, no outfield seats

  • looks like the stadium in canada... just not fully closed in

  • This park is cool . When are the rays going to get this park

  • Greetings from Minnesota! I take back everything bad I said about the rays, I respect them now as a ball club and the area its self in general. at first I thought florida didint need two baseball teams because they get watch the sping training games and suc,. but now I think tampa is a good baseball town! they showed me in the last playoffs that the people there can support the team! WAY TO GO RAYS! (I only wish they were still called the devil rays though, i liked that name a little better)

  • Why the hell are they getting a new stadium? The one they're in now is only ten years old.

  • is that like a retractable roof or something

  • okay to the people who keep saying rays fans suck, i know your probably saying that just because the rays usually dont do good. but dont you think EVERY mlb started bad just like the rays. pretty much every mlb team that just started had the same amount of fans as much as the rays do. but those teams got better and they started getting a lot more fans. guys the rays are gonna get better every year and i guarantee you that they are going to have a lot more fans. the games might even be sold out

  • The Rockies started in 1993 and made the playoffs in 1995 and won the pennant in 2007 and the Marlins started in 1993 also and won the World Series in 1997 and 2003. The Diamondbacks started the same year as the Rays in 1997 and won the world series in 2001. The Rays have been a terribly run franchise. The three other franchises have enjoyed way more success than the Rays. I don't know who you're comparing the rays to. But the three other most relevant teams to this argument have done WAY better

  • I live in New Port Richey and I came down here in 2001

All you people care about are the Buccaneers and treat the Ryas like ther 2nd class

I never knew any Rays fans until this past season when all the fly by night fans came out

It reminded me of the 86 Mets and their fly by nights fans back then

  • is that like a see through dome

  • looks pretty small they have like 0 seats in the outfeild just a grand stand behind home plate

  • What could of been.

  • damn nice tht would take like 4 years to build

  • who would put this place togather

  • This idea for a new ballpark sucks!

It won't work right there on the waterfront because it's in a crappy area and there won't be enough parking. The rays have given up on this park for now and are looking for different locations. I say they keep the Trop and dump this idea.

  • it honestly looks like a minor league stadium..just saying

  • Sorry -- one more thing. The Rays formed a commission headed be leaders in the community to come up with a stadium idea that the community support. They are already working on it and should have a recommendation in 2010.

  • Also keep in mind that summer temps in St. Pete are in the 90's with high humidity and almost DAILY severe thunderstorms. If they go forward, they can look forward to a lot of rain, lightning, thunderstorm delays and a LOT of fans who currently attend who say they will not attend if an outdoor stadium is built. People up north need to understand that in Florida, most outdoor events don't happen until the Winter because it's too hot in the summer. So give the Trop a break. A LOT of us love it

  • I thought this idea got shot down by the city. They wanted them to build on a garbage dump site instead. Maybe after winning the AL pennant they will change their minds. The Trop has gotta go.

  • It was withdrawn by the Rays themselves because there wasn't enough support for it at the time. This was about midway thru the season. Keep in mind the Trop is still not paid for. I think the extra business in St. Pete and Pinellas county during the playoffs (about 250,000 fans during the post season) may have helped change some minds. In terms of the Trop - most people who complain about it aren't Rays fans. Keep in mind it's got A/C set at 73 degrees

  • greeting from ny go yanks and o yea nice stadium

  • wow, it's beautiful. it's just the fans and the field. very personal. quite a domestic feel for a major league park. good luck building it!

  • Damm that stadium looks boring it looks like new york needs to let those guys have some money to finish it

  • What in the world is that roof-net thing?

  • It rains every evening in the summertime -- usually torrential downpours -- right around gametime. Not to mention that the daytime temps in the summer are mid 90's with extreme humidity. The "sail" is to try and avoid having half the fans pass out from heatstroke and half the games rained out or delayed.

  • the only 1 reason they want a open ballpark is to host all star game and i like the pit =[

  • tamba bay is not getting a new staduim

  • We don't know yet whether this design will be passed by the voters, but most likely will by 2012. There's the reason why they proposed the new ballpark design. I mean look at Tropicana Field right now, it's ugly, old, and dirty. And look where the team is right now. They're the American League Champions. Why not? Said to cost $450 million on estimate.

  • ITS WEIRD

  • wow it looks more like a minor league park. they need to do something like add more crap and increase the seating if they want to fill it out
