thats my uncle..the one and only China..I was with him in Miami June 5 2011..I am proud of his legacy..I had a great time with him and his wife Thelma and Keith Valles..
Listened to his show when I was a student at U of M in 1978. Loved the show, didn't care for the school. He used to play a version of Amazing Grace that I wish I could find.
I lived for years in Miami when I was in my teens. This was during the late 70s. I got exposed to jazz in a major way thanks to China and WTMI. I love him. It was great to see this video.
I almost forgot.. I also remember one of the DJs that filled in for China when he wasn't there: Bebop Bob Rebowski! Can't ever forget that name. haha. I wonder what he's doing?
Glad to hear your story. Like you, and many others, his music was kind of like the soundtrack of my life, for many, many nights. Almost like a relationship. When I decided to do this project for an assignment, I never thought it would be the only thing left from that "relationship", well that and my love for jazz which was born during those nights.
1991 I used to live on Lauderdale beach in an 8th floor apartment overlooking the Intracoastal. I used to be up at all hours of the night and would love listening to China Gate. It's where I actually got into jazz. The sound of that music reverberating across the tile floors in my unfurnished apartment made it sound like the bands in China's selections were really there. I've never had an experience like that ever again. I miss China Valles and I miss that kind of jazz in the China Gate show.
China Valles was nicknamed "Maharajah: The Purveyor of Swirls" by the Duke of Ellington way back in the mid-50s in his home turf of Rhode Island, over the years it was shortened to The Mahj.
Like Paul Gonsalves and Horace Silver amongst other great jazzers, China is of Cape Verdean descent.
