smgglr, i still have both of mine.....had 'em since i was 5 yrs old. They're still playable too! Recorded them to my PC & cleaned the noise up & they sound like new.
these types of songs remind me of the 60's so much. especially Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds. this music rocks. especially when im racing on the freeway. LOL.
I'm not sure who wrote "I enjoy being a boy" but I know it's Joey Levine singing the lead vocals. I think he also co-wrote the song. You may remember Joey Levine's nasally voice on a number of bubblegum songs, including "Yummy Yummy Yummy," "Chewy Chewy", "Run Run Run", "Quick Joey Small","Life is a Rock (But the Radio Rolled Me)", and almost everything by The Ohio Express and The Third Rail. These days he's a successful commercial jingle writer.
Right on! Bubblegum music is the best! In case you're interested, The Banana Splits Theme (The Tra-La-La Song) was written and recorded by Ritchie Adams and Mark Barkan who wrote many bubblegum songs for different artists to record, including a bunch of songs fot The Archies. They did not, however, write "Sugar Sugar" or "Jingle Jangle". Those two songs wre written by Jeff Barry and Andy Kim. Yes, the same Andy Kim who sang "Rock Me Gently"!
Oh man, after all the sugar we ate as kids in our cereals, this was a blessing to watch during our SUGAR HIGH. Ahh fond memories. It was like acid to us kids in the 70's
These days pretty well all bands are manufactured by the record industry back in the 60's there was a lot of stigma attached to being a "fake" band..as for the Banana Splits they really were something different in 1968 and aimed at kids.
The song as heard on the EP is about 2:25, but they felt they had to chop it down to a hair under 2 minutes? For all those kids with ADD hopped up on Kellogg's cereal with that extra added sugar, no doubt!!!
This song was covered by the punk band The Queers on their album Punk Rock Confidential. It 's pretty faithful to the original with a punk rock feel to it, of course. It's worth a listen.
I remember when cerial companies would put paper records on the back of their packages. This was popular during the 70's; as most of us in our Teens has a Phonograph to play it on. It is almost impossible for them to do that today, cause we now use CD players for our music.
Actually, it'd be pretty easy. I got a mini-DVD with a box of Prilosec! It was a bunch of NFL game footage... but companies could easily put out CDs or mini-CDs in packages.
yeah fantastic! I am working on covering this beautiful song... It is one of my favourite songs since I was a child. I grew up watching the banana splits show. Thanks for sharing
I remember a radio interview with Michael Stipe of REM going on and on about this particular song. And of course they have made the comment... somewhat tongue in cheek about how the Banana Splits were more influencial to them than the Beatles. Hey... how about posting I'd Be A Millionaire????
What else can you say about this song and this programme? All the superlatives in the world wouldnt do it justice. Just the best ever. I pity kids nowadays growing up with shite like Dragonball Z and more instantly forgettable rubbish of that genre.
The Queers have done a cover of this too!
