Not sure about Scott but Jean didn't really play a large role in the first few episodes scince, like Professor, she dissapeared in the first episode. She comes back though as it's revealed that the Hellfire Club tried to extract the Phoenix, which caused the explosion. She fights off the Emma Frost's Cuckoos before Emma became it's host and with held it in her diamond form however was shatterd as the Phoenix possibily destroyed. Shame Emma had to die but I like Jean better.

I love Emma and in this series It felt as always she was just misguided. She attacked the institute in order to capture Jean Grey and rip the phoenix from her and save humanity from the phoenix. Yet she went about it in the wrong way, and it was touching seeing her and Scott develop some form of a relationship. I hated how pointless her death was, there was no need at all for her to sacrifice herself in order to destroy the phoenix. She should've let it inhabit Jean's psyche once again.
