@Zilerrezko "Denn nun hab' ich vor euch Ruh", although I'm think he says "Ruch vor euch". A lot of basses do — I personally think it makes it easier to hit the low D.
Hard to make comparisons.. different times.. different recording technology.. Kurt Moll's version on YT is live and this is studio.. all the same, I feel Frick is a better singer.. less prone to err.. rhythm- or pitch-wise.. Thank you very much for posting..!
I feel he captures Osmin's nature well. Most basses either make him too evil or too burlesque, but I always thought he should be a humorous villain who only pretends to be evil, he'd never do all the torture he sings about.
Kurt Moll has for him an imposing, dark voice with unbeliable low notes (bottom D for instance), he is a true musician and singer (the coloraturas in act 3 are quite perfect), but Osmin is quite bestial, sadistic and I hear and feel it through Frick's performance and vocal timbre ... Actually, Moll sounds too noble for the role, even if, nowadays, he's the best on operatic stages.
Well, both singers, Moll and Frick have some very own problems with their natural timbre in singing- Moll sings MANY,MANY vocals back into his neck and sounds like a frog to my ears and Frick sounds extremly sharp all the time without a real bass-timbre but having the deep notes as well, but I also know Bass-Baritones who can also sing low C, now thats a voice-colour discussion, so I don´t follow it, because everything is about taste. Moll was great a diction and musical phrasing, no doubt.
I see you really love criticising Moll. His timbre can be unpleasant, but this is really a thing of taste - I like his "frog". And he also has lots of other qualities: voice agility, excellent high notes and a he´s perfect at acting. I´m still waiting for the proof, that you are better...
"His voice, instantly recognisable by its dark, evil-sounding, almost reptilian timbre, was aptly described by Wilhelm Furtwängler as 'the blackest bass in Germany' (der schwärzeste Bass in Deutschland)." See Wikipedia article.
Ah, another young person who like this type of music:) Maybe I am not so wired afterall. I have more of Gottlob Frick and many other great basses, so feel free to look through my youtube channel:)

I'm guessing it refers to the dark timbre of his voice. It's the effect of an open throat and lowered larynx.
