Hi,where the food chain starts, working all hours God sends, the modern day cowboy, rides his tractor instead of a horse ,more arable than cattle farming, the poor of this world can't afford meat only bread.
More cattle pigs and other food sources reared indoors, when I was a child we had rabbit stew organic wild rabbits,
Sad part is that in a matter of days, the family farm in Canada could be a thing of the past unless Canadians wake up NOW and realize what's happening. Farmers have the right to vote on the dismantling of the Canadian Wheat Board as laid out in the law, and they are being denied their right to that vote. Please contact the Canadian Senate & tell them to stop the bill until farmers have had the vote they are guaranteed in law.
@MsBeautifulRed It is sad that things seem to be going that way... but even if the cwb stays,, it's still going that way.... I am a 40 yr old farmer...1000 acers...60 cows.. Im in an area where there still are smaller farmers/ranchers,more ranching, but not to far away(miles)there 's a guy with 100000 acers, & a couple more half that, and it's tough enough for established farme...For someone to start from scratch,,,(forget it) and the Gov't seems to want things that way...
@TheFarmerfitz I agree, it doesn't look good right now, but we'll see what happens with the court case. Before the election, Ritz said he would support a vote, then after, he changed his mind. And by saying he would ignore a court ruling, this makes me wonder what other court rulings he will ignore. This goes beyond the CWB & raises serious questions about what's happening to our democracy.
It's odd. I had a dream about this song that I woke up to this morning. Couldn't get this song out of my head. I remember this song from back when I was a kid (LOOOONG ago). I easily have neither heard it nor thought about it in at least 30 years. Yet there it was today.
I didn't really understand the point of this song at the time. Now I get it.
Moved to the country last year and there's lots of old tractors still being used and even restored for show purposes. Fellow down the way has 2 of those huge steam tractors! He runs them too and you can hear the toot from the steam whistle every so often. My neighbour uses a tractor with no name plate on it to plow the snow from my driveway. It was made in 1945 and only replaced with a newer model 2 years ago. Thanks to all the farmers who are out there doing what they do for all of us.
I so miss the days working on my brother-in-law's father's dairy/cash crop farm, swimming in the local spring fed quarry, hauling in the hay, eating farm fresh eggs and steaks, pigging out on homemade butter-slathered corn til we almost hurled, fishing all over the 1,000+ acres for anything from brook trout to suckers to cisco, and then falling asleep in the barnloft watching the sun go down on the golden fields of grain and the vibrant yellow oceans of canola. Those were the days.
@jackfkintwist Gee, I just found this comment..sorry for taking so long to respond. You're welcome. Those kinds of "pictures" are all over the place up here in "God's Country".
@tyme4mike I love this song....every time I hear this I'm reminded of a 1949 W-4 McCormick-Deering that still sits in my fathers garage....first tractor my grandfather ever bought...and it has the rusty ole patches of steel. He is in the process of doing the ole girl up to original.....she will never leave home!
@69catskinner Sounds awesome. Not too many people redo tractors. I wish I had bought the old 1955 Oliver Super 55 my boss had sitting in the yard. It was in great shape but the engine was seized and I was too busy being young to want to spend the time fixing it. It sold at the farm auction for $810 I found out later. I almost cried.
It's so cool to see a polite, friendly comments section without a bunch of name-calling and ignorant language....could it be because of the "Canadianess" of this song and it's audience?
@harrytuttle99 Nice of you to notice and comment about that , I like it too, my other videos aren't always so well accepted ;-) I guess there is nothing controversial here just a good Canadian tribute song to the hardworkers that help provide our daily bread and some visuals of the machinery that was used I thought it made a nice combination.
@jackfkintwist i'm back for another listen. it is such a great song. murray was a tad underated i think. thanks again for the enjoyment you've provided me :)
If only all city people were this understanding of us farmers. I'm a 5th generation North American farmer, 4th generation Canadian, and as far back as records and memory go, we were farmers in Europe. In fact, my last name means "To till and work the land." I love the work, and have taken 2 off the farm jobs just too support my family farm. It is sad when the young farmers need to work well over 300 hours just to hope to keep the dream alive.

Great Vid, I love it!!!!! Good old Murry McLauchlan!!!! I am also a farmer, just a thought, I love country music, but I know another song that would give this vid alittle rock, Billy Talent's "Rusted From The Rain" !!!!!!
nice video too bad all people dont have very much respect for farmers like me. were out there bustin our backs all day long tryin to put a meal on our table and on everyone elses and all these stupid city slickers call us morons and idiots for what we do
well even though i am both lol u are right. just because where we come from, our accents, and what we do dont mean a thing at all. even though some of em are, not all of us are
@segarza just to let you know I haved always lived in the city and I have friends that are farmers and I even haved helped them out on the farms so please dont try to say no one knows where there food comes from I actualy knew where my food came from before I started going to an older mennonite church!!!!
@jessejmorris2nd Okay, I get it....you know where your food comes from. I didn't mean "every" person from the city. I meant many people in general. I assumed my meaning was understood. Sorry about that. At least there is a trend or movement nowadays of people wanting to learn the how, why and where of food production, both modern and older methods. It's nice to witness this change.
Yeah, I agree with you on that statement, Everything eventually gets old. Every tractor may be old, rusty and doesnt run, but in some way it will always be special. To you, to me and to others.
If you want to read a good story about a derelict old tractor look for "The Bunchgrass Edge of the World" by E. Annie Proulx. It is included in her Close Range Wyoming stories book.
Great tune. It may be an entirely wrong or coincidental impression, but the machines appearing in the slideshow seem rather... derelict. Any extra meaning intended in that? Affirmation of life despite a difficult lot maybe? It sounds like that to me when you combine the slideshow with the lyrics.
Thanks for watching and your interesting comment Clavittarius. The only extra meaning that I had in combining these pictures with the song is that even though their useful life may be over there is still an intrinsic beauty in these machines. Some of them have great colour brought on by years of exposure to the elements. Others are just giving themselves back to the land. Some just have a wonderful shape.
Oh ok, no I just thought the pictures would go well with Canadian singer Murray McLauchlan's tribute song to farmers and I do like tractors and old farm equipment.
Thanks stubbleking for all your kind comments. I am not a farmer but my old uncles had a farm and it always was a favorite place to go. I am Canadian and liked Murray's tribute song to all farmers and I like the old machinery and wish they could tell their stories.
Having farmed for many years, I drove a lot of similar tractors to those that are in your video. When I listened to the song, and watched your photos, it made me sad to think back at how often I fought with bankers and loan companies over a tractor, combine etc. And today, they're just rusted heaps of steel and rubber. I guess the same analogy can be applied to old girfriends that I loved, but also fought and argued with. Today, it doesn't matter a lot. I can tell you're a farmer!

Ps: If you're not a farmer--you've sure got it in your heart to be one!

Old tractors are like old girlfriends! They all have an interesting story behind them! And they never tell!!
