i think self publishing works if you only want like 20 copies of your book made to give to people you know, but that is just my view- erin

You've got some good points... also I've found that for a fiction writer, there's not just a lot of work and money needed, but a lack of prestige, actually a stigma on people who resort to self-publication. Though maybe that's what's in the article... Gonna go read that now! Good luck with the real houses!

Yep, the hardest part of self publishing/pod is promotion/marketing and distribution, i.e. getting the bookstores to sell your book.

maybe you can put excerpts from your book online and create a waiting list, once it reaches a certain number publishing alone might be worthwhile its not a sure thing but it makes the risk smaller.

The Celestine Prophecy was self published. The author sold books out of his car to churches etc before the book really took off.

The science of publishing and inexpensive marketing is changed forever because of the internet.

this is all true; and I think in the case of the C.P. you bring up an important point. the author had a clear niche market to establish his initial sales. Since beyond fiction, he was selling something theological.

I think you made some good points. It's unfortunate but if nobody knows about ya, nobody will buy. So Radiohead made $10m in one week, selling their new album for whatever you want to pay. But everybody knows Radiohead. An unknown musician couldn't do that. I've learned things like this as an aspiring... video... guy. You gotta accept that you're a very small fish in a very big ocean.
