As a diehard comics buyer of the mid sixties-late seventies, Christopher Reeve had the perfect Curt Swan comics era-style Superman costume. Kirk Alyn would've been fine in 1948, had the unbelievable animation not taken over for the flying shots. George Reeves, my boyhood hero as Kal-EL, had a cape which should've been stitched close to the neck, but instead looked like a Roman soldier's garb. But this new guy looks like a lizard....bring back the traditional costume. Long live Chris Reeve!

Like the song by "Five For Fighting - Superman" said... It's not easy, to be me! Superman is one of the hardest role to play! It's not just any superheroes, it's Superman! The one that brought about hope and symbolised peace and freedom.

It was a decent movie... It felt kinda wierd with Smallville goin on at the same time and seeing Tom Welling do so well with the character. Other than that not bad.
I'm a hug e fan of superman, so anything they release I will watch - regardless how terrible it is. IMHO, this movie was not that bad. I wish people would stop comparing this to the originals, though. It's Hollywood, they're going to continue to reboot all comic book movies regardless of how successful the franchise may or may not be.
Scripts these days are much different from the old days but that isnt nessesarily a bad thing. i think they should have come at the movie from a primarily animation background and not focused so much on wires

I really liked Brandon Routh as Superman. But what I really hated was all the piss-pour CGIs of him. Hell, many of the flying scenes from Superman (1978) look more real. Why oh why Mr. Singer, did you make that choice?
this movie was utter garbage, they should be ashamed for even putting this out. they should have scrapped this like they did with most of the original Superman 2. Watching the Christopher Reeve movies growing up, they were always abit more light hearted. This was abit too dark, Kevin Spacey was great though.

Brandon Routh played Superman too soft & squishy and overly sensitive. Whether he was told to do this by the director, I don't know. The main problem with "Superman Returns" is that we have yet ANOTHER Lex Luthor story, played to death in the other movies and on TV. The Superman comics had wonderful stories about him going to other planets, out-thinking and fighting fearsome, violent aliens, etc. He was also half of the famous "World's Finest" team of Superman and Batman...great stories there!

Superman Returns is what I like to call a "trailer movie" The best part of the movie was in the trailer, and that's all the movie was, was that airplane scene.

Are you kidding me? Brandon did a good job? Are you crazy? He was HORRIBLE! He didn't even act, he just sort of... talked.... . And he as Clark Kent and Superman, there was no difference whatsoever.
The only reason why they took him is because he looked sort of like Christopher Reeve, and when you see him, you do think of superman. But he is not an actor, thank god they are not making second movie with him.

I'm not saying he's the only person who could ever be supes and Chris, but bryan singer is a shit director who wants to make comic kiddy movies. i'm just saying Brandon got a bad wrap for the movie, but if he'd had a good scrpit, not just some hack bullshit of the orginal superman movie, and a good director the movie as a whole would've been epic with him as superman. and no kate bosworth either.

I really liked Brandon Routh as Superman. But what I really hated was all the piss-pour CGIs of him. Hell, many of the flying scenes from Superman (1978) look more real. Why oh why Mr. Singer, did you make that choice?

this movie was utter garbage, they should be ashamed for even putting this out. they should have scrapped this like they did with most of the original Superman 2. The cg effect from Smallville are just as good as this movie, trust me that is not saying much at all. I am very interested to see what happens with the re-boot. Brandon however did a decent job here. but lol cmon Lois's child being supermans at the end that's just lol. As bad as Bane looking like a punk in the batman movie with Arnold

@TheDevilish420..Couldn't agree more, the script, the directing, and some of the acting was abit poor.
Only thing that was good was Brandon. Kate Bosworth's acting was awkward, Superman having an illegitimate child is beyond stupid, it was just abit too dark for my liking. Watching the Christopher Reeve movies growing up, they were always abit more light hearted. This was abit too dark, Kevin Spacey was great though.

@narcisistichater I still think Reeve was the PERFECT fit for this role... it's obviously a real challenge for these new hollywood takes on comic book characters-- in one fell swoop he took the character of Clark Kent and made him shine. As superman, he was just perfect for it... RIP Christopher Reeve: we all miss you, bro!

If I was asked to have played Superman in this movie I would have walked around with that suit all day, every day on set and home.

well i've seen the new actor playing superman, and i do like Brandon Routh much better, has the size the look superman has always been a big guy and im kindaworried withthis new guy(whos only 6'1)i think if they would of kept Routh for this next one coming out every one would of seen more of a dynamatic in his actingthat everyone saidhe was lacking because after Superman Returns i think we all know were going to be seeing alot more action in the new one instead of just the plain and machine gun.

Brandon Routh played Superman too soft & squishy and overly sensitive. Whether he was told to do this by the director, I don't know. The main problem with "Superman Returns" is that we have yet ANOTHER Lex Luthor story, played to death in the other movies and on TV. The Superman comics had wonderful stories about him going to other planets, out-thinking and fighting fearsome, violent aliens, etc. He was also half of the famous "World's Finest" team of Superman and Batman...great stories there!

* quit trying to overcomplicate EVERY story line! It seems like most movies are this way anymore. So many elements are added to a story that the meaning is lost.

Superman Returns is plotted AFTER Superman II. Which means......He had his space ship in the barn, and I'm sure a couple other crystals to make it back to Krypton's floating remains. You obviously didn't pay good attention.

@Furingia lol wrong again! I actually grew up with the old school Superman where he actually turned animated when he decided to fly all the way to awesomeness of Christopher Reeves bud. There was little to no emotion in the film, which is why it pissed me off so much. But i guess we agree to disagree mon ami!

@joeriginal I agree. Reeve was the man who really made the kids jump from couch to couch with a blanket cape while humming the theme song. Routh was actually one of the better things that has happend to the franchise. The only sad thing about Superman Returns is that I never saw Superman lay a punch on anyone compared to all of the other movies! HAHA! Brandon was good but Chris will always be the REAL Superman of the movie and real world!

That was almost as lame as the movie... Almost... The only decent scene in the movie was the airplane scene. I agree the costume was lame too. It's supposed to have red not maroon! The evil twin of Superman in Superman 3 wore maroon. The director was the same douchebag that effed up the first Xmen movie. And what the hell is up with the old school heroes like Superman and Indiana Jones turning into deadbeat dads?

You know it's really funny. With all the fancy special effects they have in the movies today it's funny they fly Superman on wires. It looks a bit phoney. Go back to the 50s and get that counterbalance rig George used and don't foget the springboard and the ladder and the bar outside the windows. Would look a lot better. You could go from ground to air in one continuous movement. Get the guy off the stupid wires!
