i burst in to tears when the father said , "he cant reason but the profound thing he said that we share the same shadow, he hit that one right on the button" , awesome!
I don´t think it is that he cannot reason. Because his brain structure is different is very hard to survive for very long under such physical conditions. Probably that´s the only thing different about him: His brain. It would be almost impossible to survive for very long in such a body.
@d0alittledance but the question is if he understands that literally, you can't tell that. maybe its only another quote that he uses about his father sometimes, like he says "you made yourself very important to me", you'll never know if understands what he says about his father.
People like Kim are invaluable and unique in so many ways, and we would never know about them, if it weren't for people like his father. I watch so many dark documentaries these days, but this is a documentary where nobody gets hurt, and there's people with hearts, and people with gifts. This is what is worth living for.
@d0alittledance they also said that in his effort to socialize he had adapted certain phrases and ways of being from reading, and he tries to replicate that which he has learned like and apply it like straight out of a textbook... like when he tells people you have made yourself important and all those other phrases
I think both Kim and his father had an extraordinary life in its own way.
Thanks to Frank's dedication, it was possible for us to watch someone contemporary who had this incredible ability.
So the fact that we use 3-5% of our brain is no longer an "urban legend", as neuroscientists had us believe. Their 'proof' that we use all of our brain is a magnetoencephalography which, taking the pathological as baseline, in the absence of brain damage... will say 'we already use all of our brain'...
Wow, its such a touching video on how his father never gave up on him, and the unconditional love felt between the two. May Kim Peek be in a better place now, Rest in piece Kim Peek.
@d0alittledance True but he is only repeating what he has heard. Repeating information like a parrot does and understanding it are two different things.
@d0alittledance It bugged me that Ramchandran didn't ask him what he meant, at least that we saw, by, "he doesn't seek his message in the stars." That could've been subtextual and the meaning would just be lost on someone not thinking along the same lines as him.
The day I watched this documentary first time, Kim Peek died the very next day. I never knew he was ill at that time and in the end of the documentary they tell how his father is worried about dying before his son. From what I understand, Kim fulfilled his father's desire. Rest in Peace Kim. We all love you.
His story is so touching. RIP Kim Peek, you're an inspiration to us all. As you may not be able to understand some things, you make us all understand more, and help us to reach for knowlage. You're hillarious and brilliant.
It is said that Kim is no longer with us, but with all the discussion of who passes first, I cannot find any information as to his dad surviving him or not... Does anyone know?
@flowerofsilver I've actually read somewhere that he's still alive and spreading his son's memory! what a great man and father! I really hope that they join each other somewhere better!
Kim peek is a 1 of a kind guy and has a wonderful gift
his father has to look after a kim 24 hours a day with no holiday no break, But do you know why this is so..... Answer is that kim's father loves him like kim says ("me and my father share the same shadow") What a dad
I will be probably the only 1 on youtube to say this but
To kims father - You mother and father must be very proud...
RIP Kim. I really wanted to meet him. I wish my dad and I shared such a relationship, but honestly that last line "my dad and I share the same shadow" really broke me down.
there was a long video of him in front of an audience where the audience is asking questions similar to this, but they ask questions much longer, one of which was a baseball questions, and one of the questions Kim didn't know.... Can anyone give me a link to that video? i have been looking for it and can't find it
this story really reminds me of good will hunting... in the end... human relationships are the most touching regardless of ones ability or disability.. RIp
not really.. you're talking about 2 different things. Kim has an extraordinary memory, and able to link things up ways that normal people can't. but he can't figure out simple things or metaphors.
people with IQ are able to do it easily.
it's like playing wow and adding different stats to your character.
to the father of kim peek, sir i salute you with my heart!!!you made kim a very great person and so are you...i don't say that i don't have a nice father...but in your case it is a big sacrifice in racing kim...he is totally amazing and that is all because oh you...
now i have a very sweet smile on my face and yet tears run to fade those smile...
anyone who disliked this video is going to burn in hell, kim peek was a miraculous man. we all need to realize how great the loss is of a multi talented savant. Everyone who disliked his just imagine how fran must've felt when kim passed away, he meant everything to him. anyone who can dislike such a strong relationship between father and son obviously has no emotions. it hurts me just to think about fran must feel with the majority of his life missing...passed away...
Aw man, such an amazing Developmental disability, and yet such an Amazing person...i would love to have met Kim but still it is lovely to meet his legacy...
Part 1 can be found here: documaga.com/2010/01/02/the-re al-rainman/
I prefer linking the website instead of the Google video source itself because that website always makes sure the documentaries keep working, even when they get deleted from YouTube etc. they always manage to find another.
My Dad and I share the same shadow, I would understand that as a metaphor. What a beautifull person he was and what a genuinne father, wherever you are now Im sure you are a happy man
"me and my dad share the same shadow" sounds like a conceptual thought in the form of a metaphor. exactly what they said he could not do. .there are things were just not meant to try to categorize into levels of understanding. I think he was more brilliant than we ever thought he was
Kim Peek was blessed with what seemed to be a great, bottomless memory bank... but more importantly, a father whose devotion was deeper and more immense.
R.I.P. Kim Peek
All the best to Fran Peek, the epitome of dedication and unconditional love.
i cried while watching this. although i'm super sad that kim has passed away and that the world has lost such a amazing person and that no one can get to interact with him anymore but i'm also happy for his father, because like it was mentioned, the greatest fear of parents whose kids are not normal is that no one will take care of them when they pass away. but i really really salute his father and imagine the sorrow of kim's father, having stuck by his son for 58 years. it's like a routine.
Wait a minute.. They said he couldn't understand metaphors.. yet he comes up with the shadow response to describe the relationship between himself and his father.
Can someone tell me waht's the name of the song wicht played in 2.44 to end of the film... ?? I want to for a memorial wideo.. My best frien died :'( also Kim..
Rest In Peace.
My father don's love me like this, this father is a good sample for parents.
Man, the fact that Kim has such a dedicated father almost brings tears to my eyes. No Homo. I only wish I had a Father growing up and to gain guidance from in this world. So much respect. For them both.
Strange with his memory, in that there is probably such little understanding. He understands so little probably and does not comprehend that. He does not understand that he does not understand, Lost in a meaningless world of data. Like a huge hard drive without the processing chip.
As parent of daughter with autism , I have walked that walk with Kim's Dad....we have now the joy of walking together in the light of love and acceptance. Understand that one concept of acceptance gives you the freedom to Love.. My daughter name is Kimberly, she also goes by Kim. The name means the the Noble one...and so was Kim Peek....
when i saw rain man i had to see the real man who inspired them, but now i guess its to late and not many people knew what a nice and loving person he was.
RIP? Kim Peek Died???? I am terribly shocked. Badly shocked. I wished to meet him and ironically I knew about him just yesterday. I am badly hurt. badly.
The most beautiful part of this story is that it's not just Kim who is the extraordinary person but also his father who has shown such astonishing dedication and self-sacrifice. I'm truly and greatly inspired by their strength and determination in the face of adversary. The world will not lightly forget these two men.
R.I.P......must have taken the patients of the saints to be his father, i think they are both remarkable, as was his dear mother i am sure......amazing....
"sharing the same shadow" is a metaphor. according to what they said about his creative thinking ability i'm wondering does he understand the meaning of these words or he just heard it and just repeat it.... anyway, great guy R.I.P Kim Peek
He could also have meant it literally. If it amused him to look down one day and see that his dad and himself standing next to each other created only one shadow on the ground he might have repeated it along with some of the other random thoughts he's had. We just dismiss the other random statements and pay attention to the ones that have meaning for us.
Prayers and peace to You MR PEEK! You are a inspiration to all parents especially those with developmentally disabled children! you are correct 30 hours a day 10 days a week . Thank You for sharing your beautiful son with the world. you gave him a WONDERFUL LIFE. job well done.
Wonderful and moving documentary. Couldn't help but wonder about the ending, where the father was saying "almost there" while they are walking through a graveyard.
to kim's father: you have been through a roller coaster ride raising a special kind of person. i admire your patience. i swear it moved me. wherever your son is, he is now happy and is now looking over you.
you have made a good decision of raising him instead of abandoning him.
i mean this in the most respectful way but i think its a good thing that kim went before his father cause had his father gone before i think it would have just torn his world apart considering his father is the most important person in the world to him, he said it best, "my father is my shadow" he was a brillant man and i'm glad i had the pleasure of witnessing his genuis, r.i.p rain man
"My dad and I share the same shadow" - isnt that a metaphor he just used?

"I'm happy just to look at you."
I wish I could steal women's heart with a line like that.

"sharing the same shadow" is a metaphor. according to what they said about his creative thinking ability i'm wondering does he understand the meaning of these words or he just heard it and just repeat it.... anyway, great guy R.I.P Kim Peek
petoak 2 years ago 2
He could also have meant it literally. If it amused him to look down one day and see that his dad and himself standing next to each other created only one shadow on the ground he might have repeated it along with some of the other random thoughts he's had. We just dismiss the other random statements and pay attention to the ones that have meaning for us.

Someone should have introduced him to Wikipedia

not everything on wikipedia is a reliable source of information. The library is a better source of information as is checked before it is published.

Wonderful and moving documentary. Couldn't help but wonder about the ending, where the father was saying "almost there" while they are walking through a graveyard.
Surprising way to end the documentary.
RIP Kim

Good catch.
Not only that, but that was also the last subject they talked about, the "paradox" about the child and the parents timing of death.

to kim's father: you have been through a roller coaster ride raising a special kind of person. i admire your patience. i swear it moved me. wherever your son is, he is now happy and is now looking over you.
you have made a good decision of raising him instead of abandoning him.
yong2x85 2 years ago 7
i mean this in the most respectful way but i think its a good thing that kim went before his father cause had his father gone before i think it would have just torn his world apart considering his father is the most important person in the world to him, he said it best, "my father is my shadow" he was a brillant man and i'm glad i had the pleasure of witnessing his genuis, r.i.p rain man
