Though the US of A has fostered the worst, we just have to concede to the fact that it has also fostered the greatest. May you rest in peace dear Groucho.
God, I want to cry for Groucho Marx! It seemed like he was the only comic person in the world to ever get such a "stand-up" applause! *-* Groucho for life! <3
You know Groucho really wanted to be remembered as a writer and not as an actor. The finest comedian who ever lived and quintessential sad clown, he only ever wanted for one thing a Groucho to make him smile and yet he was the only person who couldn't have one.
Why did this a-hole have to say Karl Marx -- this is why I say that Senator Joseph McCarthy did the world a service by sending these communist rats back into their holes. I know that Jack was reading somone else's words, but I am sure he could have opted to not say it -- tool
@NewhamMatt I'm not sure if you were being facetious but just so you know, the marx brothers' father changed the family name to marx because it sounded more German than Marix and he thought it would make it easier to find work in America. They were not sympathizers and the name was purely coincidental. It is in Harpo's Autobiography I believe.
@NewhamMatt Actually Karl Marx's ideology was not really adopted by the communists, they simply used his name because he was a brilliant man who emphasized the idea that a perfect society would be one where the worker was not oppressed by the employer. It's a shame of history that his name got attached to the communist dictatorships which actually did more to oppress the working man than any other system.
@ColumbiaPerna Maybe he was more mature than you and he wanted to commend Karl Marx for his contribution to politics through the doctrines of equality and justice for all?

Groucho Marx, the funniest man that has ever lived and Groucho I understand all your jokes and I think Margaret Dumont is funny and she probably understood a lot of your jokes. The Marx Brothers and Margaret Dumont RIP.
Jack Lemmon referred to Karl Marx in a positive light? Why don't we refer to Adolf Hitler as that creative genius who invented our modern interstate system? Jeez...whoever wrote that needs to be slapped.
It'd be a far, far bigger shame if they were never born.
It's our duty to introduce their memory to our youth. I consider presenting the classics and the old masters to my child more than mere entertainment. It's a necessary regimen of enrichment and culturing that is my responsibility to carry out as a parent. My 9 year old can name all the Little Rascals, is well versed in Laurel and Hardy, and knows there's well more than just Three Stooges.
@BennyUrquidez86 indeed, but their legacy of wit never dies. Even if you drink all the Duck Soup, tear out all the Horse Feathers, eat all the Animal Crackers, and even when the Night at the Opera in Casablanca is over; we are still left with sore mouths from laughing and smiling through the experience.
i too have seen all their movies - too many times - i know all the lines and how well crafted each was. this made me cry as well. for those who have not given their classics a try, please intro them to your kids like my dad did to me and like i did to mine. and then some day you and your kid can go out for a nice tootsey fruitsy ice-a cream.

It is particularly moving to hear Groucho thanking Erin Fleming, the beautiful and tragic young woman, who lived with him, cared for him, and single-handedly resurrected his career a few years before his death.
Oh wow. The first time I've ever seen him in colour. That is wild. That's good, isn't it? Yes I suppose it is. Colourized Marx Brothers movies would be.... I don't know. Like Weird Al on 8-track. Just not the same.
@dedbusted I too was a bit stunned by his mentioning of such a serious topic in a situation like this. Totally wiped the Groucho-expecting grin of my face.
Groucho's speech is slurred because he had suffered several mild strokes that left him slightly impaired. In spite of this, it's wonderful to see this clip. Thanks for posting it!!!
@mrgb46 Adam Sandler has done some seriously ridiculous bullshit, but please don't equate him to Rob Schneider, who has done nothing BUT ridiculous bullshit. Punch-Drunk Love and Spanglish were wonderful and would have been lesser without his contributions.
so wonderful! Groucho was won of a kind. It's sad he was the last brother . You can see all he's thinking about is them and his mother, Minnie. They made a musical about their family called 'Minnie's Boys' - it didn't do well on Broadway but it's not all bad. I love that he mentioned Margaret Dumont to. She was like a brotha' to him. RIP Mr.Marx xo
Groucho Marx passed away in August of 1977, scarcely a month after I was born. I'd like to say I carry on the tradition of his sense of humor and the only thing keeping me from doing more is my mother's decision to stop at two sons. Had she had a third or a fourth we might really have been on to something.
What a guy...did he say to Jack Lemmon..."all this for me?" wow...what an example in humility. Made several generations laugh..and still funny in this bit here...and sincere...
It's sad to see this honor come so late in this life. It's wonderful seeing him come to life at about 2.25 and seeing that sparkle in his eye. A genius. Thanks for the mamaries, Groucho.
@TheNEWfilmfanatic99 Their films were incredibly good, funny, witty and everything, but not Oscar-winners by the Academy standards... not "best picture", not "best actor", and so on... Thank God they were a whole different league!!!
I'm sure emotions had something to do with his wavering voice...also remember, Harpo passed away in 1964 and thus was not visible in the audience...though i'm sure he was there in spirit...(Arthur Marx aka Harpo, passed away during open heart surgery after he'd suffered a heart attack) God bless the souls who bless ours for such a short time....<3
Does anyone know if there's a reason why he didn't mention Zeppo?
I've heard that Zeppo was just as witty as Groucho (if not more so) but was purposely down played on screen and more of a behind the scenes writer. So it seems he more than deserves recognition, especially still being alive at the time. Was there a dispute between them or something?
@countevil I don't know much, other than the fact that when they were lads, Zeppo stole Groucho's car with his brains and trickery. I ain't beefin; I'm just saying. Techies rule, anyway.
Zeppo busy being Newton Gimmick after making those movies in the 1930s, so he wouldn't be the type to be standing up on a stage at that point, anyway.
I think the bros is as cool with each other as bros be.
@countevil I think the award was probably given to "the" Marx Brothers trio. The famous ones known for starring in the Marx Brothers movies. And I read about Zeppo once saying something to Groucho in a car (strangely another car story like "LouisLambert"'s) that had Groucho on the floor laughing -with no known record of what he actually said, unfortunately-. I don't remember anything suggesting anything like a dispute in the biographies of Harpo and Groucho I've read.
Hey, world, you stinky enormous turd called world:
Hats off, please. Here's one of the last greatly grands! And about the poor Lucille Ball comment here, his voice was raspy, slippy and slurry 'cos emotions, at last, reached his face from his heart. Life's a bit more bitter without him.
Great to see this clip. I was 16 when this award was given to Groucho and I remember watching it live. I was then and still am a huge Marx Bros fan, having been introduced to their films by my Dad. The funniest joke from this presentation was not included in this clip. At one point, Groucho looks at the Oscar and wonders out loud if he could hock it.
My beloved hero. I, too, wish the academy had gotten around to this earlier- it would have really been something to have all of the brothers there. Groucho was obviously moved by the honor. It really gets me.
@madmomentsgo If they had had this idea 13-14 years earlier they would have been. And then Groucho had not been so fragile. But at least they got there in time for Groucho to get the award.
6 people have the audacity to dislike the Leader of Freedonia?
Of course you know...THIS MEANS WAR! XD
Groucho, Harpo, Chico, and, yes, Zeppo, and Margaret Dumont--
There was never a wittier man than Groucho, never a funnier mime and clown than Harpo, and never a better player of pianos, cards, women, and everything than Chico.
The Marx Brothers!
You don't like them, you say?
HORSE FEATHERS! *wags his eyes like ol' Croucho...*
Without question, the greatest comic genius ever. I was just talking about Groucho over lunch with a friend today. Chico and Harpo were such great musicians as well as being funny. The likes we will never see again....
@thevoicechameleon All the Marx Bros. were musicians. Mama made sure they learned at an early age. All of them were pretty good singers and dancers as well. Their father arose early each day and started breakfast, while he was waiting he had a glass of liquor and a cigar. He lived on into his 90s. This could be where Groucho picked up his cigar habit. Ageless comedy from past and on to the furure.
This is a sure sign that honorary awards should NOT be given at the last moments of someone's life. Groucho here is a shadow of himself--almost painful to watch. Why not give him the award 5 years earlier when he was still spry? For that matter, why not have given the Marx Brothers an honorary award in the 1950's, when they were all still alive?
@maxreger100 Groucho deserved this award, as did Chico, Harpo and Zeppo. You're right about the delay of this award. It would have meant so much more if they all got to recieve this award.
R.I.P. Marx and your family.

They were probably republicans is why they didn't get an award sooner
Stupid Hollywood ...Karl Marx Lovers...Stupid leftist morons....

@dinosammy1 umm...republicans would be the right. Groucho was a liberal for all his life, and was ergo on the left.

Was there a dispute between them or something?
countevil 1 year ago
@countevil I don't know much, other than the fact that when they were lads, Zeppo stole Groucho's car with his brains and trickery. I ain't beefin; I'm just saying. Techies rule, anyway.
Zeppo busy being Newton Gimmick after making those movies in the 1930s, so he wouldn't be the type to be standing up on a stage at that point, anyway.
I think the bros is as cool with each other as bros be.
LouisLambert 11 months ago
@countevil I think the award was probably given to "the" Marx Brothers trio. The famous ones known for starring in the Marx Brothers movies. And I read about Zeppo once saying something to Groucho in a car (strangely another car story like "LouisLambert"'s) that had Groucho on the floor laughing -with no known record of what he actually said, unfortunately-. I don't remember anything suggesting anything like a dispute in the biographies of Harpo and Groucho I've read.

I miss this comedy genius. I think that Groucho was the man who revolutionized film comedy in the world.

Hey, surely Harpo was the best?

The man, the myth, the legend.
Although a quick mention for Harpo wouldn't have gone a miss
MrDave1701 1 year ago
@MrDave1701 "I wish Harpo & Chico could be here to share it with me... I wish Margaret Dumont (their foil in all the films) could be here too..."
I thought that was pretty classy, he certainly didn't have to mention her.

My beloved hero. I, too, wish the academy had gotten around to this earlier- it would have really been something to have all of the brothers there. Groucho was obviously moved by the honor. It really gets me.

If it weren't for Groucho, I'd be a fool.

i wish the rest of his brothers were all on that stage :(
madmomentsgo 1 year ago

Without question, the greatest comic genius ever. I was just talking about Groucho over lunch with a friend today. Chico and Harpo were such great musicians as well as being funny. The likes we will never see again....
thevoicechameleon 1 year ago
@thevoicechameleon All the Marx Bros. were musicians. Mama made sure they learned at an early age. All of them were pretty good singers and dancers as well. Their father arose early each day and started breakfast, while he was waiting he had a glass of liquor and a cigar. He lived on into his 90s. This could be where Groucho picked up his cigar habit. Ageless comedy from past and on to the furure.
gunslinger5854 1 year ago
This is a sure sign that honorary awards should NOT be given at the last moments of someone's life. Groucho here is a shadow of himself--almost painful to watch. Why not give him the award 5 years earlier when he was still spry? For that matter, why not have given the Marx Brothers an honorary award in the 1950's, when they were all still alive?
maxreger100 1 year ago 2
@maxreger100 Groucho deserved this award, as did Chico, Harpo and Zeppo. You're right about the delay of this award. It would have meant so much more if they all got to recieve this award.
