In the west having a tan is associated with leasure time spent out doors, which means you must have gone out alot to the beach which inturn means you must be well off economically. In the east (India, Pakistan, Afghanistan ....) having a tan means you probably work low paying , low status outdoorze job. In turn having a tun is seen as a bad thing.
