oddly, my grandmother was a japanese and was in her teens during the war, man, the stories she told me of us bombing the shit outta her village....... but like she said it was all justified, both sides were abosolutely brutal, but thats war for you, it aint pretty.
My grandpa fought at Guadalcanal, Peleliu and Okinawa. The things he told me...wow. All such brave men. We will never see fighting like this ever again. Ever.
This was a job that had to be and was done by very brave men. Betio was a vital airfield to assist in the move westward and eventually on to the Japanese home islands. Also such a strong garrison with air power capability could not be by-passed and left behind the allied lines where it could disrupt lines of supply and communication.
Look at Betio today on Google Earth, you can see sunken LVTs and other craft in the shallow waters of the lagoon.
As a former Marine, I feel pride for what those Marines did in the past. Betio's landing strip proved to be a vital asset for the Allies in continuing their fight against the Japanese.
Damn, this is hell

I pretty much can't imagine. I praise all Allied people that got through the doom and gloom times when freedom looked like it was finished.

Reading about WW2 it always seemed to me that the Japanese were the most brutal to fight. (The most brutal for the United States) God bless U.S.M.C.

If they called off every attack after the first heavy casualties we'd still be fighting WW2.

omfg all for 1 square mile...Can't believe the "top military figues" didnt call the invasion off aafter the first day...
respect for the soldiers on both sides for fighting on for the cause and not for that one square mile.
