River Thames Walking- Erith to Woolwich 21 February 2009

Woolwich is such a sad town these days, half its shops have gone and all of its clubs have closed down. It is just like the place in the Special's song 'Ghost Town'. I have never come across a sadder more depressing place than Woolwich.

The whole journey plus the journey of running around like nutters, took us around 14 1/2 hours. We decided to call the journey, The Epic, as we had not eaten through the entire journey, or had anything to drink. Sadly we lost most of the footage of video and photos, so we couldn't post it ourselves. But we thought we'd mention our journey as this video sparked our memories. We will definitely do it again though. Thanx for reading.

At Oval station, we decided that although it was open, we'd rather save our money as we were only a few miles from Tooting and also felt that we had achieved something great that day.

When we finally got to Tooting, we ran around like nutters, trying to find some thing to eat as we were starving and hadn't eaten all night. We finally ended up in the good old Tesco where we brought two pizzas and garlic bread. We came home and we really did stuff our faces like hungry animals.

London Bridge was the next station we came across, again same thing ( whats with LU staff on Saturdays, do they get sloshed on a Friday and not bother to turn up early the next day) Anyway, we carried on, every station after that we encountered the same problem. The list of stations were; Borough, Elephant & Castle, Kennington, and Oval.

When we reached the first Tube Station after walking from Poplar along the East India Dock Road onto Limehouse Road, and then onto Commercial Road, we came across the our tube station (Aldgate east) we were shocked to find it was still closed this was at probably 5:30am. So we thought lets just keep walking until the next station (Monument) we come across, and hopefully it will be open by the time we get there. No it wasnt, we then walked along London Bridge to cross back to the southside,

Yes, reminds me when the misses and I, walked along the Thames Path, from Tooting Bec, we walked to the Wandle Delta Creek, on the southside, where we started our journey along the Thames to Canary Wharf (81/2 hours) and onto Poplar. We then realised we had no money on our Oysters Cards so tried to find a shop it was late at night and oysters cant be topped up until a certain time in the morning, so we walked hoping that the tube station would be open when we reached it.

Its great to have a walk around an area that you've heard about, but in reality will probably never visit ......

Ahh, an interesting video, and last tuesday I had the pleasure of cycling along that path when going between Greenwich, Woolwich, Crossness to Erith Pier, thanks for your insight narration.

I particularly liked the views across the river of Canary Wharf. It was interesting to see the piece of the super gun. I didn't know a piece was there.
