  • Joan Crawford was a "movie star", Bette Davis was an "actress'...NUF SAID!

  • But yer are, Blanche, yer are!

  • "With the actual... rodent... *pained look*" I loved that part. XD

  • She abuses her children.

  • It couldn't have hurt the 'industry' any that there was this alleged animosity between the two actresses, and it certainly didn't hurt the ratings/box office for this particular film.Whatever the truth about their 'relationship' they still both gave superb performances in WHTBJ & rightly deserved the title 'Star'.Nowadays someone can become a 'star' simply by appearing on some cruddy 'reality' show. What a sorry state of affairs.

  • Joan Crawford was robbed as well for a nomination, she was actually a standout, the scene when she was tied up and was trying to push the table over, was very disturbing and sad

  • No doubt about the great acting skills of Bette Davis, but Anne Bancroft took the 1962 award for her role in The Miracle Worker. The film is astonishingly acted.Crawford accepted the award for Bancroft who was then working on Broadway.

  • @floridafyme

Some years, there should be two Oscars for each category... Other years .... They should just skip it. ...jmho.

  • Bette Davis' performance is awesome!

  • Joan is a true icon they was both amazing in this film xx

  • "I'm sure you must get very bored by the constant friction that you and Bett Davis are porsitively dagg-"

"She'd KILL you if she heard you say 'Bett.'"

Ha. So true. I can just imagine the facial expression she would give him...

  • I read in Hollywood Babylon that it was step-father daughter incest when she was growing up when she was eleven.

  • FAIL on the interviewer for pronouncing Bette's name as "Bet"..Somebody's gonna end up with a dead rat on his plate.

  • I saw this film when I was very young, movie scared me so much but always remember Bette Davis's great performance.

  • @Karotsy Joan was great too.

  • Bette wasnt robbed at all for an oscar its just the real fact that Anne Bancroft gave a better rich deep performance !!! DK

  • she's beautiful inside and out

  • "its wonderful to be a perfectionist."? i bet, Ms. Crawford, I bet.

  • Gosh! Seeing this makes me realize how GREAT Faye was in Mommie Dearest!

  • @Philm54 oh my gosh i was just thinking the same thing. Faye sounds like joan too

  • it's funny that she is so fake and dramactic in this interview, when bette is very honest and down to earth with her interviews

  • @TheMalibumoon It's not so much that she is dramatic. It is that she is very self aware of her image as "Hollywood Star". Joan came from a poor background and was totally a creation of the "Hollywood Studio" system, and she immersed herself in that fantasy creation to the nth degree. She played the Star to the very end.

  • @TheMalibumoon

this is really how joan was,she was professional, she was classy,Intelligant, well spoken, she came from a poor backround, went to school up until the 5th grade only, thorugh her early years, went and looked up words from her scripts in the dictionary, she is an extremely commendable woman and not everything from 'Mommie Dearest' was true

  • Wow, I want to see the movie Baby Jane...

  • @revision2011 It's a great movie. I just watched the whole movie the other day. I wanna watch it again! :D

  • @revision2011 Yes you do!! It is a wonderful piece of art!!

  • BETTE DAVIS MERECIA SU TERCER OSCAR POR SU GRAN ACTUACION EN ESTE FILM.

  • Betty always thought she was a better actress than Joan and Betty actually had a chance to bash her in this film and she did and that is why it was so successful. Joan and Betty always fought against each other in their early years and always new their lines well and truly Betty is the winner.

  • Ms "Hollywod," herself...America loves Joan Crawford

  • @TheTrippybutterfly not fact i have replied before i said this are the rumors i have read about Joan and Bette.. and with Marilyn they said Marilyn told it herself on in one of her theraphy sessions. Its hollywood so it could be true a lot of closet gays/lesbians actors and actresses on that time i think.

  • "I've never had time to be friends with her." What a riot.

  • astonishing film, remarkable actresses, legendary bygone era.

  • joan crawford had a stage name called scat the cat, she had a scat fetish LOL

  • She was looking really old here. She looked like she was wearing a ton of makeup in the interview and in Baby Jane.

  • two of the greatest actresses that ever lived

  • @MrJim12341121 Like her personally or not, Joan is one of the best actresses of all time. She had so much talent, she sang, danced, AND acted. She was a legend.

  • "it's wonderful to be a perfectionist" ahem well i think we all know that ms. no wire hangers

  • Anybody know what year this is from?

  • Can anyone that knows this film well help me I have been trying to found out the name of the music been played when Joan Crawford goes on her own to the opera and she goes into a flashback.. its a very famous tune I hear a lot but I have know idea what it is could anyone please help me????

  • 1:29 "Oh, no you DI'INT!"

  • I LOVE JOAN CRAWFORD...that is all :)

  • cunt.

  • she should have eaten the tomatoes surrounding the dead bird. that was nice of bette davis's character to decorate it with tomatoes.

  • in real life betty jane and joan crawford hate each otherr haha

  • AlsoBrandos kids are screwy, Daryl Zanucks kids are messed up one died of alcohol Carroll O'Connor drug son, Jimmy Stewarts twins were alcoholics. I can on and on so little Chrisitna should have killed her self like the rest of the hollywood kids who could not handle their parents fame and life. In this case Christina is the monster.

Davis and Crawford had a great ride no matter what.

  • Davis and Crawford did not hate each other it was publicity. They made jokes and ribbed each others talent but sorry folks(the child was the abuser) why did so many other stars children kill them selves?christina is a spolied ungrateful human being.(just ask Myrna Loy)

Charles Boyer son committs sucide Margret sullivans daughter William Powells son (Stabbed himself to death) Paul Newmans son kills himself. Jeniefer Jones daughter jumper out of a 5th floor window...

  • I heard her and betty davis came to blows during the making of baby jane. they didnt like each other.

  • JOAN LOOKS SO GOOD HERE!! SHE HAS SUCH CLASS AND POISE! NONE OF THE MODERN HOLLYWOOD SLUTS LOOK AS GOOD AS SHE DID! THE GIRLS OF TODAY ARE WHORES AND BITCHS!!!!

  • @dannys2222

    so true so true

  • @dannys2222....yeah, but she reminds me of my Aunt Vicki - - dear and sweet to me though she is, my Aunt Vicki is a closet BITCH and I really believe Christina's "Mommy Dearest" rendition of her!

  • @dannys2222

    You got issues with women?

  • @BoudiccaBlanc SHUT THE FUCK UP U ASS HOLE! AND GO WATCH SOME TV!!!

  • @dannys2222

  • @BoudiccaBlanc YES I AM THATS CAUSE IM VERY RELIGIOUS ! DONT FORGET UR THE ASS HOLE THAT STARTED ALL THIS SHIT!

  • @BoudiccaBlanc BUT SINCE IM SO NICE ...U CAN COME OVER ANYTIME TO SUCK ON MY 9 INCH UNCUT COCK BABY!!

  • @dannys2222 You should seek some therapy. And... yeah right. Nine inches? Does that mean Boudicca would have to suck you twice?

  • @PennyDreadfuI UR SUCH A FUCKED UP WHORE BITCH ! UR ALL FUCKED UP U NEED TO GET SOME PILLS AND DO YOURSELF IN!!! THAT WOULD MAKE THE WORLD A BETTER PLACE FOR ALL OF US!

  • @PennyDreadfuI UR JUST A FUCKED UP JEALOUS BITCH CAUSE ALL U EVER GET UP UR LOSE DIRTY ASS IS 4 INCHS FROM THAT UGLY CHINKER MAN OF URS!

  • @dannys2222 Just remember. She only likes wire hangers.

  • NO WIRE HANGER EVVVVAAAAA!!!!! RAHHHH!!

  • they hated each other,so all this rival in the movie is absolutely real!!!two of the greatest movie stars-actresses ever lived!!today's holywood actresses can't even reach those two...

  • This movie is a lesson in good acting

  • I can't imagine any other actresses playing the roles, they were both equally great. There has been much made of the so-called anymosity between the two when filming WHTBJ,and if the allegations are true, well it certainly seems to have made for fantastic inter-action between Davis & Crawford.

  • Joan Crawford and Bette David, two of the most scariest actresses ever.

  • such a lady...you know, speakin of WEHTBJ, the stairs scene, I've always wondered why Joan didn't just slide on the stairs railing, it would have been quicker and easier lol and maybe Bette wouldn't have caught her on the phone haha

  • Bette Davis was robbed of her Oscar for Baby Jane

  • @TheHawk1959 Bette Davis was always robbed of Oscars! Come on Judy Holiday in Born Yesterday over Margo Channing in All About Eve! You gotta be kidding me! Bette was brilliant in this~I thought Bancroft was somewhat lackluster in The Miracle Worker! Hepburn has 4 Oscars for playing herself-she was always the same! Bette was always playing different parts and always doing them so well! I suppose you have guessed by now Bette is my favorite actress of all time! Paul Newman favorite actor!

  • she'd kill you if she heard you say bet. hahaha

  • rats = rodents = animals

  • I seen an interview with Bette Davis and she was bad mouthing Joan, and the interviewer said "You must speak good of the dead" so Bette being Bette says...."Joans dead....good".....lol

  • Horror novel see video book trailer

  • Bette and Joan almost had contests being mean to each other filming this movie. I read that after Bette kicked Joan in the head, resulting in Joan having to get stitches, Joan retaliated by putting weights around her body, so that in the scene where Bette has to lift her. Better sprained her back. Bottom line, Joan wanted Bette sexually, and Bette refused her advances because she was STRICTLY DICKLY.

  • @peachfuzz1204 - Yeah, I had heard the same thing (about the weights, etc), Joan didn't like Bette because apparently Bette had had an affair with her husband years before.....

  • @peachfuzz1204 Ok, where the fuck do you get "Joan wanted Bette sexually"?? Everything was right up until you said that part. Enlighten me, please.

  • @madeyes4u im not peachfuzz but anyway.. Joan was bisexual and they say that she was in love with bette but bette rejected her cos miss davis is clearly straight so joan was furious.. much like when she had one night stand with marilyn monroe and ask marilyn again for sex but marilyn rejected her and told her straight forwardly that she didnt like it with women..lol... made her bitchy towards marilyn after

  • @chaoticstar16 Lol! Ok, well at least you've got your facts straight...

  • @madeyes4u well dont know if this is facts ..just rumors i read.. :)

  • lol Joan was lyin through her teeth about the admiration for Bette, they coudnt stand each other.

  • @pattisgirls

actually it wasnt mutual, joan crawford was a fan of bette davis as an actress.she just didnt like her becuase she was such a bitch

  • @KURISUCHRIS99 uhhh how can you be a fan of someone if you don't like them????

  • @pattisgirls Bette pulled that "we're just fine" bullshit too though. All for apperances sake.

  • I wish Hollywood had talented women today like Joan and Bette.

They were amazing and are true legends.

    George Vreeland Hill

  • did Joan not abuse her child?

  • Who could ever give ten thumbs down?

  • Bette said in her later years that she and Joan had a very professional relationship during the filming of this movie. Joan suggested that she and Bette post a notice outside of the studio stating "we're sorry to disappoint you, but we're getting along just fine." That quote was from Bette herself.

  • @WellConditioned i read on wiki that the two faught a lot. Even Bette kicked Joan in the head and had to get stitches. Img lad they got along though.

  • I love rat stew

  • A rodent is an animal silly Joan! LOL!

  • Bette Is Still The Best 2 This Day Untouchable

  • Bette had a lasting appeal & wasn't over shadowed by her daughter's "Tell all" book "My Mother's Keeper" the way Joan Crawford was by Her daughter Christina's book. Joan made some great Movies but Christina really ruined Joan's image practially over night. B.D. could never do that to her Mother Bette Davis. Bette was no saint but B.D. really got it shoved in her A*ss after the book came out.I hope she saved the money she made from it.

  • LOLLLL "She'd kill you if she heard you say Bet(te) !

  • Baby Jane scared the hell out of me when I saw it as a youngster...

  • look at all those tomatos around that dead bird

  • the remake with the Redgraves was really messed up also......

  • @ 2:29 you can tell how much Joan really was dedicated to her work. Both her and Bette were devoted to their craft, making sure they always gave a good performance for their audiences. Nowadays all actors care about is getting a paycheck and could care less what an audience thinks.

  • Joan was a " fascinating actress" herself here when she talked about Bette Davis as though they liked one another. She & Bette Davis definately didnt like each other I think it was Joan who started the discord among them. Plus Bette Davis' career went on long after the glamour left both actresses & Bette was still making great films.

  • @NFitalianGuy

well, actualyl Joan had nothing agaisnt bette EVER,she actually was fond of her,but bette always had something against her,she said it was becuase she felt joan couldnt act,but i think she knew joan was a good actress and was jeleaous.

  • "-She'd KILL you if she'd heard you say Bett..."

    Damn straight!

  • @fujimusumetfc joan and betty, it dont get no better its like 70s music, the dead bird surrounded perfectly wtih tomatoes , awsome lol

  • no wire hangerssssssssssssssssss!.

  • She was agreat actress.

  • Joan Crawford was an invention by Luiclle Laseur aka Billy Kasin.

One need only read Joan's own sanitizied autobiog 'Portrait of Joan' to know that Joan had a lil prob w/ reality, owning her sad background & telling the truth. She is still a great Star of incred accomplishments. In today's world she'd prob be categorized as a borderline personality w/Naricistic disorder.

  • First of all, did they not have the decency to use a fake bird and a fake rat in those scenes? Did they not have the laws back then that they do now? Second, how could Joan sit there and say that the feud between her and Bette Davis was a myth? That alone makes her a good actress!

  • Joan was a great actor, but Bette was the star of that movie, we are all greatful to have had those ladies intertain us for so many years :-)

  • (And everyone is scared of Joan C?!.There is an amazing resemblence of Baby Jane to Madonna these days.) This was such a great movie..perhaps if JC's reputation was not so beaten down by Chris. C., people may recognize what a great job JC did and both of them were excellent, Bette was truly frightening yet pathetic--they were terrific. The desperation JC showed spinning in circles was great, they 'don't make 'em like this anymore'...

  • "It's wonderful to be a perfectionist" if a actor said something like that today they would get laughed at, it is a freaky movie, but even in the movie it comes across Davis is a better actor, Crawford never could have played that part

  • Accolades aside, these two Divas in their own right were cast together because they were both 'names' with reputations for chewing the scenery as they used to say and could bring in the 'box office'. WHTBJ is a fierce film indeed. While I personally prefer Davis, Crawford had her moments.

  • Comparing Joan to Bette is like comparing Sharon Stone to Meryl Streep.

Joan always played versions of herself & relied on glamour and closeups.

Bette was a character actress and excelled in unsympathetic psychologogical portraits and played everything from waitresses to Queens.

  • @lakevubud Wow, that's a good way of putting it. Davis was amazing.

  • Is that a wig?

  • that face jumps right of the screen and takes you on a Joan journey I love her

  • Joan Crawford's Eyes are mesmerizing. She is beautiful.

  • go to it girls

  • I love you Joanie. Rest in peace! What a woman!!!

  • Joan Crawford is one of the best American Actor of all Time.

  • wonderfull

  • It is not ever for yourself to say you are a perfectionist but for others to determine.

  • both ARIES?

  • JOAN CRAWFORD is a EVIL WITCH in the real life....

  • @MissUniverse2010 your only hearing the one side why do you think her daughter wrote the book after she was died? so joan couldn't explain her side don't judge till you hear both sides of the story

  • @MissUniverse2010 Is a evil witch in real life" you speak as if she IS still Living...but then again with a name like miss universe..i guess you can call someone a name. I will bet you look like Miss Universe or Kermit the Frog's girlfriend.

  • Our husband just phoned us. We were worried that he is suspecting us of 'infidelity' but now we feel better!

  • MONSTERS!

  • I'd like some "nice little place where they could look after me"

  • According to Davis' biography "This and That," the feud with Crawford started with this movie. Davis states that Crawford wanted to play her role with perfect clothes, push up bra, hair and makeup all the way down to manicured fingernails. The scene on the beach had to be filmed in a studio because of Crawford's alcoholism. Crawford wouldn't campaign for the film at Oscar time. Crawford was originally hired to play de Havilland's part in Hush Hush Sweet Charlotte but was fired.

  • Yes, the 'Hush...Charlotte' incident was a result of a bad prank Davis played on her. The unoccupied location mansion in the film was far from town and Crawford insisted on her own 'air conditioned trailer/dressing room' on site (no one else had one). While napping in her trailer between takes, Davis arranged a party back in town at the hotel and loaded everyone up and left Crawford alone on that desolate location overnight. Crawford took to a hospital bed and refused to work afterward.

  • BABY JANE ONE OF THE BEST MOVIES EVER MADE!!!!!!!!!!

  • Angelina Jolie

  • It's sad that they couldn' t have been friends, but they did a great job as arch nemisis in the movie.

  • Remember the MOMMY DEAREST movie---those adopted kids lived in hell---a hell created jusdt for them by their EVIL adopted mother JOAN! Didn't even leave te kids any of her millions when she died--as she put it: FOR REASONS THEY WELL KNOW!

Yeah, they knew she hated them!

  • @micmoable You're confusing reality with a work of FICTION. A book designed to be a tool of revenge, embellished to turn as many (gullible) people against Crawford as possible.

Check what the other two of Joan's children have to say about "Mommie Dearest" and the exaggerations and fabrications Christina presented therein.

Didn't know there were two other daughters in that house at the time, did you? Oddly enough, they were left out. Ask yourself, "why?"

  • @Morpheus1910 maybe you're right---I based what I said on the movie---maybe there is another side to the story but remember this---there's always someone who thinks a fellow or lady is an angel---and behind the scenes when no one else outside the small family dynamic is watching---the person could be a literal tyrant----I know, cause my stepdad was a tyrant to me and my brother and an angelic upstanding fellow to fiends and folks in the community---so I still think it's possible she did this???

  • @Morpheus1910 , the twins were bought 10 yrs AFTER Christina & Christopher. Just because the twins weren't treated abusively does not Have anything to do with the elder 2. Kids have completely dif dynamics depending on what was going on w/their parents at a certain age. Both Vincent Sherman & Helen Hayes and may others WITNESSED Joan being bausive to Christina & Christopher. By the time the twins came around, she had Pepsi and wasn't as depserate.

  • @lakevubud Yes, I realise the twin girls came along later and that personalities evolve and people change. However, I still say a great deal of Mommie Dearest is fiction and, as I said, a tool of revenge and bitterness. Also, lest we forget...an instrument to generate income!

I don't know what constitutes "abuse" in the minds of each individual, but I do know that it's highly subjective.

I respect your opinion and will grant you that Crawford had to be a very difficult woman.

  • @Morpheus1910 , It's rare to make up abuse. Who would want that legacy....like making up you're a mess and have baggage. Joan Crawford, the star was one thing. Joan Crawford, the mother was something else. Christopher has never made a dime off of his story yet he has gone on record for backing up Christina's claims. Vincent Sherman and Helen Hayes and others would have absolutely nothing to gain by affirming Christina's claims.

  • @lakevubud I'm afraid that I must strenuously disagree that it's in the least rare to make up abuse; it's done all the time as a device to gain attention and sympathy.

As for the rest of our discussion, it's really a moot point and I'd really just rather we politely agree to disagree. At the end of the day, we're each really just going to believe what we wish to believe anyway.

  • @Morpheus1910, making up possibly but not devoting several years to write a book. Everyone I know that has exp abuse agrees that Chirstina's story has the ring of truth to it. Ppl that seem to refuse to believe it are either such Crawford devotees that they can't reckon her public persona with her priv one or they just can't comprehend having ur caregiver be abusive.

  • @lakevubud

I agree, but I wonder why the woman from Redbook Magazine who supposedly witnessed Joan strangling Christina never went public? Journalists eat that up, but on the other hand, I do know that they had a certain code of silence back in those days, especially for popular celebrities. Look how John Kennedy got away with all his extramarital affairs, and the press corps knew all about them. Also, how come none of the servants ever came forward? Bizarre!

  • @ligreekguy ..it was the 50's. Ppl just didn't discuss things in those days. The words pregnant & cancer were considered vulgar & not for public discussion. Joan was a megastar then and it just wouldn't be covered. Same thing with Bing Crosby.

It was a completely dif world. Who would Joan's servants go to? And she usually just had one personal asst who was most often a devoted fan.

  • @lakevubud

True again, and I suppose the journalist was already dead by the time Christina wrote the book. (She was already relatively old when the strangle scene occurred in the 1950s, and the book came out around 1979 or 1980). There were also a number of servants who either quit or were fired (cooks, maids, etc.), but they could have been accused of just being bitter. There was also the policeman or social worker who counseled Christina after the beating? The nuns at the school?

  • @lakevubud That may be, but was a book and movie really necessary? If that had happened to me, i would keep it under wraps, not tell the whole god damn world to know about it. But since her mother was the glamorous person she was, she knew she would get something out of it since she was being disinherited by her mother.

  • Joan Crawford was a Good as actress as Bette ever was, in fact Joan was also a accomplished Dancer. Everyone is of course entitled to there opinion , and not taking anything away from Ms. Davis, But one must wonder the type of person Ms. Davis was when she also said Errol Flynn was Not a actor, the same accusation she made toward Joan, and when Joan passed made the sick and not at all funny comment that "Joan Crawford's Dead? Good." We Love you Joan.

  • @iamismay What Bette said was, it's not nice to speak bad of the dead. Joan Crawfords dead... Good !

  • Joan Crawford and Bette Davis, two of the best actresses ever

  • @freedomnow29 hurricane and a tornado under one roof! Wished I was on set during the making of this film! Such talents!

  • @freedomnow29

and joan crawford was one of the best abusers EVER!

  • i love them both

but in my opinion joan is better

  • The nice thing about these old Hollywood stars is that you can go back again and again and watch their old films and it's always entertaining. Who wants to go back (or even watch once for that matter) Renee Zelwigger (sp?) or Angelina Jolie movies---boring.

  • Crawford was also in the depths of alcoholism at this point in her life, which is evident in both her perfermance in 'Whatever..Jane' and this interview. 'Jane' would be her last competant performance, with the exception of 'Night Gallery'. All movies after, and most of her interviews she was a drunken mess. She was completely deluded, believing she still looked like she did in her 20's, suffering from a galloping case of Norma Desmond-itis.

  • @BedfordMilw

im sorry but there was NO evidence of alcoholism in her work in "baby jane". its one of her very finest performances emotionally. despite having a far weaker role than davis, she easily stands her ground. her acting on the beach in the final scene is one of the single greatest pieces of acting of all time.

  • @CocaineHabbit LOL! yeah that was some acting job with those rubber tits she was wearing sticking straight up and that miserable dialogue about her own demise. Maybe a cocaine habbit would make me start believing a washed up performance was pure genius as well. :-) BTW there is a mountain of evidence of her well documented alcoholism and subsequent bizarre behavior as a result. Have you ever seen 'Berserk' or 'Trog'? YIKES!!!!! pure crap in a can.

  • @BedfordMilw

i said IN BABY JANE, you moron. im allowed to have an opinion, much moreso than one who believes he is allowed to spout off heresay as fact. grow up a little bit and maybe we'll talk.

  • @CocaineHabbit apparently you're the moron that can't read. Stick to your drugs, dumb ass, its all you know anything about.

  • I still can't decide who was more pivotal in that movie. But I can't get Bette Davis out of my head singing that letter to daddy song.

  • Crawford trumps Davis any day of the week!

  • I always thought this hairstyle looked like a cinnamon bun....gee, Im hungry!
