ren looks so matronly! the darker (natural, no doubt) hair and that severe sutherland hand-me-down of a dress make her much older than she does now and this is 20 years old!
@notnever90210 I agree. I think she was in a sort of transitional period in her personal life in 1986. She would marry Rick Ross two years later and then divorce in 2000. Now that her children are grown and she is married to a man under more relaxed circumstances, her demeanor, personal appearance, and her performances all have an air of relaxation and youth.
The Australian Yvonne Kenny is far superior.... more tembre in the voice and interpretation of line is greater.... of course her age is older but this is a pleasant version of the song :)
Anna Netrebko's version is much better than this one, but even so, Renée Fleming sings amazingly, nothing comparable with herself nowadays!
I'm not agree with PYCello about the Richard Strauss' VLL. Schwarzkopf's version is quite good but no perfect just because the first Lied, Frühling, is transposed half step down! You should listen della Casa/Böhm and Auger/Previn; those are extreme expression of beauty; no mannerisms!!!

guacala.. its not that she has a lovely voice, dont get me wrong I love her, but this is just way over dramatized, that happens when you let your soprano do as she likes so she can show what she can do
Oh Moon on the deep deep sky. Your light can see far. You roam all the vast world. Looking in the homes of people. Oh Moon, stay for a while. Tell me, tell me where my loved is. Tell him, oh silver Moon. That my arm embraces him. So he at least for a little while. Remembers me in his dreams. Give him light on his way. Tell him, oh tell him who is waiting for him here! Is the human soul dreaming of me... Let him awake by the memory! Oh Moon, keep shining,...! ...but I love Czech language, bye ")
@csscottmusic I'm no expert so I just go on how a piece of music makes you feel. Music has to evoke some kind of emotion, and Renee does this for me every time. The memory of your sister will still be painful at the moment. I lost my sister 18 months ago. She is never far from my thoughts. Still mixed emotions. I wish you well.
@texasfntc26 We can hear alright, thats the problem. 1) Exceptionally poor pronounciation 2) Muddy phrasing 3)Beautiful voice but is this really a water nymph? Overrated. I recommend you listen to the version of Milada Subrtova - then you'll know why I belong to the 'haters'. Musical greetings :-)
Gosh, what a beautiful aria... I never get tired of hearing it. It never ceases to give me shivers. And Renee is gorgeous. I was lucky enough to see her sing it at the Met (last year?) and it was impeccable. She's lovely.
I'm not a fan of Renee Fleming, but something in her timbre makes this rendition unique. I don't like her Mozart or Bellini or Italian repertoire, but I find her voice absolutely fascinating and mesmerizing in Strauss.
Oh, very nice work from Miss Flemming. So or so - I suggest to listen to the Czech Miss Subrtova and Slovak Miss Benackova, I like them the same, though regarding the language, I understand just very little from Renee.
Yes, this Lady knows what She´s singing about...bravo!! Compare please with Czechoslovakian Original --Milada Šubrtova-RUSALKA--here on YT.She was the best iterpret of Dvorak ś Ruslka in 50ties and 60ties.
@MarieAnneElla There are several "best" versions, but I agree that this one is not among them. Fleming is a wondeful singer, however, she does not have perfect feel for this music. She sings it like Summer Time, with excessive rubato and dynamics, which are not called for. Compare this toanother American gal - Frederica Von Stade.
@lehrent I agree that von Stade's is among the best versions. Funny Boston audience in the video clip: were they amazed, or did it take them a moment to regain consciousness? I thought that Fleming had her performance extremely well thought out and executed accordingly. Maybe too much so for some hearers, with all due respect.
Sir(s): If I may, at this Date and Time, state here and attest to the full how this "Song to the Silver Moon" by Ms. Renee FLEMING is, as they say, "Och'in Pri'krass'nah." Thank you. Have a Nice Day. Godspeed. --JAMES HOWARD DAY (JR.), SATX 78202 UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, "OLD TOWN"
This is easily my favorite version of this song out there. The sound is rich and emotional, her diction is impeccable, and the performance is spot on.
I know Ms. Fleming's voice isn't for everyone. That being said, neither is Maria Callas' voice. That doesn't make either of them any less legendary and incredible. They got where they are because they are extraordinary.
I would also like to say that I am a music major. Many people are criticizing the music major critics. That is just as petty.
@Singerguy24 Though past her prime, there are some warm, sublime phrases in Benackova's perf. from the Levine Gala. Also, impressive is Leontyne Price!
@Singerguy24 lol her diction is awful, I love her voice, and I even love it in this piece. But her diction is FAR from impeccable. Keep studying music major.
You hit the nail right on the head. I love both Maria Callas and Renee Fleming, may be for different reasons and they both have their strengths and weaknesses. However, both of them are the most critizied sopranos ever. But with all that critique, it is not going to change anyone's mind. And to me that's all here in this piece.
@kurvatakco I Like them for different reasons...... I adore Lucia's clean, uncomplicated way of singing. But I love Renee for her rich vocal color and compelling performances.
@maritate If you want the correct pronunciation, listen to Lucia Popp singing the same song, over and over again. She was Slovak and her pronunciation of Czech was a lot better than that of R.F.
@alithecrab To je idealni, vlastne, mate pravdu! (Mluvim cesky, samozrejme.)
(That would be ideal, really, you are right. (I speak Czech , of course.)) It goes without saying that Miss Fleming's singing here is once again breathtaking.
@usenetposts If you're looking for the pronunciation of Czech words, as maritate was, I can't think of anyone more qualified than a native Czech speaker. I don't think it has anything to do with the difference between speaking on the street and the stylised language used for opera.
Une des plus belles(la plus belle?)voix de notre époque.Dommage qu'elle enrobe parfois trop de sirop ce qu 'elle chante!Mais le timbre dans l'aigu est vraiment très beau!
I love all of the highly opinionated post from music majors, 90% of you will never even perform out side of some shaky recital in a broke down auditorium, yet you all act like you know and understand the world. Stop commenting on this and go back to studying on how to be come a mediocre highschool chorus teacher in BFE... RESPECT THE GREATS PEOPLE!!!!! I GUESS PAV. WAS JUST OK TOO, HUH?
I'm not English, not Irish, not Scottish BUT Welsh, all part of Britain. I come from the 'Land Of Song'. For all those out there that want to criticise Renee; ask yourself 2 things. Can you do the same as her, like for like ?? AND
do you actually know what the **** you're talking about when it comes to music ?? QED = quod erat demonstrandum = precisely what was required to be proved.
It's always amusing to read the mindless comments from stupid mouth majors regarding Fleming. You people are the worst musicians to begin with (please see any music theory/history/conducting class), and then you come to the table with pejorative statements about this fantastic talent. Leave musical analysis and critique to people who actually know their craft.
If you think these comments are mindless, you should read the ones about Elisabeth Schwarzkopf -- even worse! I learned this song at a young age -- it was in my grandmother's "hits for the pianoforte" (`1920) music book. Love it -- and I think Lucia and Renee provide more than competent interpretations -- but then again, after reading some of the comments, what do I know ....
You know a lot. A lot of people don't respond well to Renee's voice in America because it's not cookie cutter and it's just a whole different SOUND than most Americans are used to. It's not this airy, light, white noise voice. It's dark, deep, and passionate.
@mattie51 I'm so glad you agree. However, I WOULD like to point out that I am a vocal performance major, so there are SOME of us out there that know what we're talking about ;)
Renee Fleming is my favorite soprano and I love her interpretation of Měsíčku na nebi hlubokém, but I do like Frederica von Stade's better. Her's is the one that inspired me to do this aria when I was 14.
This is definitely one of my favorite songs, by one of my favorite composers. She isn't my favorite for all songs, but there are some songs that I could listen to her sing forever, and this is one of them. Thank you for sharing the beauty.
I was in the Hall that night..it was a rapturous concert by all who sang. Here was Fleming singing with sincerity and simplicity, before she became Renee Fleming the brand name.
I had the opportunity to watch Renee Fleming teach a masterclass. She is so gracious. I learned so much from her. This performance is stunning. The ending was fantastic!
Why isn't this opera performed more? It's one glorious melody after another, and no one did melody like Dvorak. Not since Schubert was there another naturally gifted melodist like Dvorak..
(Und Fleming ist auch nicht schlecht!)
Gorgeous...just gorgeous...Thank you so much for posting

@usenetposts If you're looking for the pronunciation of Czech words, as maritate was, I can't think of anyone more qualified than a native Czech speaker. I don't think it has anything to do with the difference between speaking on the street and the stylised language used for opera.

I dig it.

anyone who loves this aria should also check out Frederica Von Stade's version. Sublime. A very honest , unaffected interpretation.

@wthight123 For the benchmark: try Milada Subrtova. You wil never want tolisten to another version again.

It's amazing to watch her mold each note with such care. I've heard a few interpretations of this aria and keep coming back to this one.

A triumph for Fleming. A transendently moving song perfectly rendered.

Gorgeous! A beautiful rendition; however, what's with the dress? It looks like Renee has popped her head up from a drum

Leave musical analysis and critique to people who actually know their craft.
ucfjoe76 1 year ago
If you think these comments are mindless, you should read the ones about Elisabeth Schwarzkopf -- even worse! I learned this song at a young age -- it was in my grandmother's "hits for the pianoforte" (`1920) music book. Love it -- and I think Lucia and Renee provide more than competent interpretations -- but then again, after reading some of the comments, what do I know ....

@DavesXXXXXXXX
You know a lot. A lot of people don't respond well to Renee's voice in America because it's not cookie cutter and it's just a whole different SOUND than most Americans are used to. It's not this airy, light, white noise voice. It's dark, deep, and passionate.

@StandingAtTheMic I love her voice, so amazingly rich and intracate like a fine wine or aged scotch... you are spot on with this post!!!!
mattie51 1 year ago

Thank you for sharing the beauty.

i have heard a lot of recordings of this song by different people, and i think that Renee's is my favorite.

@operadiva023 You might also like the recording by mezzo-soprano, Frederica Von Stade. It's also on YouTube.

I was in the Hall that night..it was a rapturous concert by all who sang. Here was Fleming singing with sincerity and simplicity, before she became Renee Fleming the brand name.
