I think the casting of and bringing in a woman to be the main protagonist (and a bland one at that) is a major mistake. What made the 1982 film was the group of grizzled, character actors. The director/studio decision asks of us to maintain our disbelief in that the Norwegians were adamant in not wanting anyone in their base and a woman is the exception. It destroys the subtext built up in the JC's premise.

I saw the origional The Thing when I came into the TV room, where my dad fell asleep while TV, and right when I entered, The Thing was starting. I thought the title was cool, so I stayed and watched it. It was one of my first Horror flicks, and it was incredible.
Now that this prequal is coming out, I can't wait to put my nerdy feet in that theatre on October to see the grand masterpiece being reborn!

In the 1982 film it seemed everybody more or less tolerated each other which upon discovering the aliens ability to disguise itself as those it kills that already existent tension increased. A banjo? Really? that whole "everbody getting along" scene reeks of a teen massacre flick. In the 1982 film it seemed everybody more or less tolerated each other which upon discovering the aliens ability to disguise itself as those it kills that already existent tension increased. The original knew exatly what tone it wanted and stuck to it all the way through. That... that banjo has me worried.

Lame. The Thing has no reason to have a prequel, sequel, or remake. It's a classic and no movie, no matter how good, could live up to the outstanding acting, atmosphere, and (for their time) special effects of the original. I have little hope for this movie and expect it to be as bad as the Nightmare On Elmstreet remake.
