Why not experiment & test your old weapons out for a worst case scenario if your going to sink it anyway. In a real battle that requires a ship to be sunk & not taken over, they would have thrown missiles @ it from a very far distance. This exercise gives me confidence in the RCN. The data obtained from this exercise will help a lot in R&D.

@mxfox408 They're going gun runs - in the case of the CIWS, *point defence* guns. Modern watships aren't seriously armoured because it's not an effective defence against modern missile technology. It's far, far harder and more expensive to build an armoured ship that can resist modern missiles than it is to bring an new missile able to defeat that armour into full service. And no amount of armour in the world will save you from a modern keel-breaker torpedo.

The Canadian Navy is highly trained and is currently deployed in the Gulf and Libya. At the end of WW2 Canada had the 4th largest Navy too.

So all you internet tough guys (Canadian and American) aside, I was on the east coast during this op, but it was used to judge just how long a ship could last under fire. HURON was built to survive long time bombardment, but she surprised everybody how long she lasted. This was a joint operation between the US Navy and the Canadian Navy and Air Force. The ship flying the US battle flag is a Tichonderoga class US ship, and she flew it out of respect for a long-serving ally.

Of course, if she was still floating by the end of the day, an LA class US Submarine was on hand to fire a torpedo and take her out from the keel up. That didn't happen, though, much to their disappointment. Spookily enough, Algonquin sunk her... using Huron's gun.

An anti-ship missile would have sunk her too quick and they wouldn't have had a chance to try the other weapons. This SINKEX was all about SECONDARY WEAPONS and my original statement stands and is CORRECT.

@Nelmistro The entire operation was arranged in a specific order. The whole point was to see how much of a beating a Canadian warship could take, which is why the submarine was last in the queue. If the combined fire of the Canadian and US fleet couldn't sink her, the submarine was on hand to finish the job. These ships are built to take a beating.

The ships are built to float even if most of her hull is taken out, and she had all her damage control hatches wide open, which says something about the building of warships. There was a SINKEX done by the US a few years ago and it was a combined US, Australian and Canadian fleet that tried to sink her. Took three days.

There was also this poorly planed landing in Lebanon, americas 'war' on Cuba, trying to turn them from communism and the 300 or so failed attempts on Castro, and most recently Iraq.

This was a live fire Ex designed to exercise the alternate weapons systems available. Those gun rounds fired by the ships were air burst rounds that explode BEFORE impact spraying schrapnel so maybe it didn't look like they hit but they did bad enough damage to sink it.
Any one of those ships or planes could easily have fired missles but that wasn't the point of the Exercise.

I agree with 101andrewj, I think Canadian military managed their expenditure wisely. Not because they are weak or cannot afford to buy big battleships, they prefer to use the military just to protect their territory, not to INVADE other countries and start a war somewhere.
Which makes sense why their National Debts and Taxes are not as high as in the US.
@billyasik Good call. I'm in the navy and the only reason we don't have big battleships anymore is because you don't need to pound a ship or land targets with shells anymore. They don't do as much damage and you have to get too close. It's much easier and safer for us to launch a couple missiles from a few miles out.

So all you internet tough guys (Canadian and American) aside, I was on the east coast during this op, but it was used to judge just how long a ship could last under fire. HURON was built to survive long time bombardment, but she surprised everybody how long she lasted. This was a joint operation between the US Navy and the Canadian Navy and Air Force. The ship flying the US battle flag is a Tichonderoga class US ship, and she flew it out of respect for a long-serving ally.

Of course, if she was still floating by the end of the day, an LA class US Submarine was on hand to fire a torpedo and take her out from the keel up. @DaveMcColl84 It was just on the History Channel and the missile they fired was a Sea Sparrow. In this application that's a SECONDARY WEAPON because a Sea Sparrow is an Anti-Aircraft Missile not an anti-ship missile.
An anti-ship missile would have sunk her too quick and they wouldn't have had a chance to try the other weapons. This SINKEX was all about SECONDARY WEAPONS and my original statement stands and is CORRECT.

If the Americans disposed of their ships in the same manor the Canadians did it probably would take the the same amount of time. However, the Americans took the quick and easy route of torpedo. Also, the significance of this sinking is that it proves that Canadian destroyers can a lot before it even punctures meaning Canadian Warships are built to fight. Hence, Canadian military is not pathetic

If the combined fire of the Canadian and US fleet couldn't sink her, the submarine was on hand to finish the job. These ships are built to take a beating.

The ships are built to float even if most of her hull is taken out, and she had all her damage control hatches wide open, which says something about the building of warships. There was a SINKEX done by the US a few years ago and it was a combined US, Australian and Canadian fleet that tried to sink her. Took three days.

Wars that America lost are the three Seminole wars in the 1800s, the war of 1812, Vietnam. There was also this poorly planed landing in Lebanon, americas 'war' on Cuba, trying to turn them from communism and the 300 or so failed attempts on Castro, and most recently Iraq.

This was a live fire Ex designed to exercise the alternate weapons systems available. Those gun rounds fired by the ships were air burst rounds that explode BEFORE impact spraying schrapnel so maybe it didn't look like they hit but they did bad enough damage to sink it.
Any one of those ships or planes could easily have fired missles but that wasn't the point of the Exercise.

Why would Canada need a huge navy? First of all Canada military is more like a self defence force, and secondly Canada is part of NATO
Canada does not start wars. If there is ever a big enough war, Canada will go to war alongside NATO in a combined fleet.

I agree with 101andrewj, I think Canadian military managed their expenditure wisely. Not because they are weak or cannot afford to buy big battleships, they prefer to use the military just to protect their territory, not to INVADE other countries and start a war somewhere.
Which makes sense why their National Debts and Taxes are not as high as in the US.

@billyasik Good call. I'm in the navy and the only reason we don't have big battleships anymore is because you don't need to pound a ship or land targets with shells anymore. They don't do as much damage and you have to get too close. It's much easier and safer for us to launch a couple missiles from a few miles out.

@billyasik, billy I don't want to be a douche bag but National Debt in isn't caused by the military it's caused by people getting loans knowing they would fail to pay off. If you look at military spending the US has rarely spent much sense World War 2 or Vietnam. Average American pays 1% on tax income than a Canadian, the American population is so high that an average american doesn't have to pay that much taxes.

@billyasik, and also, believe it or not Boeing, the company which makes missiles, planes, and helicopters and sells than to a lot of countries made more than Microsoft, Sony, and much more and had the most income for many years now and it's still growing big. A ton of jobs are being made by military needs or air ports still.
And also, one of the reasons why the US has such a big military is because being the back bone of NATO.
