Language is, by its very nature, dynamic. Would you argue that all Americans are pronouncing the entire English language incorrectly? If so, I put forth that British English has ALSO changed since the colonization of America, albeit probably not quite as much, due to the number of immigrant languages influencing American English.
That said, the title of the video isn't "How To Pronounce Aluminium", it's "How To Pronounce Aluminum". He is indeed pronouncing "Aluminum" as most people do.
The original versions were "alumium" (no longer used) and "aluminum", both by Humphry Davy, a BRITISH chemist. Brits are shooting themselves in the foot by arguing.
Check wikipedia: Aluminum; scroll down to Etymology.
(Anyone who says "Wikipedia can't be trusted" for something like this, with established and well-documented history, will only say that when it proves them wrong.)
Personally, I think we should compromise by ditching both modern versions and going with the original "alumium".
Aluminium should be said Aluminium as the British say it because their was a gathering a year or two back where Physicists and Chemists who spoke English met and decided on many words including Aluminium and a some words were decided to be the Americanisms and some the British-isms, Aluminium was decided to be called how the British say it!!!
@SargentMugen The only one who's pretentious you, America is the hipsters of the world. The rest of the world uses aluminium. The rest of the world also uses the metric system and DD/MM/YYYY
@PolarStah Well first of all, you're very WRONG. The rest of the world doesn't use the metric system. I believe that Liberia and Myanmar (Burma) are not metric, so you fail there. Also, the rest of the world DOES NOT use DD/MM/YYYY. How about you tell that to China, Korea, Iran, Japan, Hungary, and Lithuania who all use YMD? Also, Belize still uses MDY, so yeah, you fail there also.
Actually, the word used to be "Aluminum" for everyone. But some people in Europe thought it would be easier to change it to match the periodic table. Americans use the original spelling/pronunciation of it. Get over it.
the issue is whether or not the second "i" belongs. If it does, then obviously the UK folks are right. If it does not, then they aren't. My periodic table says "aluminum" dont know if the folks at the chemistry textbook got it right or not.
@flyingmysticaldj there are acceptions to every rule, irregular verbs for example, but Aluminium is a regular verb so to speak, so it follows the pattern.
@startrekwarsmixguy First, Aluminum is not a verb. It is a noun. Second, since there are exceptions to every rule then Aluminum can be one of those exceptions. Right? But in all seriousness this argument is pointless. Both ways are correct. It's like color and colour, it all depends on where you are. English is a diverse language.
@Sclunger according to the methodology of naming elements regarding those to be named after the descovery of diiferent elements as elements rather than simply materials, the element should have the suffix IUM, therfore the element Aluminum, derived from the mineral Bauxite would be incorrectly named, the suffix IUM is not present, the element could be named alumium, however this would not adequely reflect the property after which it is named, Alumen, meaning a bitter salt taste.
@SQUIZZLER24 And besides, if an American didn't know that was how you pronounced it, that does not make ALL Americans stupid. I'm 13 and American, and I knew how to pronounce that. It's not a hard word to pronounce anyway.
@SQUIZZLER24 Oh, well I'm sorry that I don't have the same sense of humor as you. You call me stupid, I'm not going do take it as a joke. I don't know, maybe I'm full of myself. So my bad for taking it the wrong way, let's joke around some more!
Everyone complaining that this pronunciation is not proper English: if you go the channel page, you'll see that "pronunciationbook" explains AMERICAN pronunciations. This is the proper pronunciation for the standard dialect of United States English.
@iamgarrett But why would anyone in their right mind ever want the american pronunciation is that is the WRONG way to say the words. Also saying a word wrong does not count as dialect dumbass
@jloae Hahaha, take a linguistics course. Language is arbitrary, and the "correct" pronunciation is relative. The pronunciations and spellings of the American dialect are only "wrong" when in an area that uses a different dialect. Saying that American English is wrong is the same thing as saying that Latin American Spanish is wrong because they don't speak Castilian Spanish. And why would anyone want to speak American English? Because they live in America, and value communication.
Lol you retard xD. . Its an English derived word which is actualy spelt WITH the extra I so "Aluminium"

@Emanresu56 it comes from the english spelling of the word, not the way that the americans changed it. if you look at the proper english spelling its spelt aluminium not aluminum. thats why americans pronounce it differently.
You guys. He's telling us how to pronounce "aluminum." It clearly says so in the description. If he were telling us how to pronounce "aluminium," (which, by the way, my browser doesn't even recognize as a real word) it would say so.

Color, meter, airplane, mom, artifact, chamomile, donut, gray, licorice, plow, pajamas, this sentence only contains seven real words.
