Wouldn't you love to be able to give your bosses shit like that? I can see it now..:"listen you armchair know it all jerkaholic-you don't know jack shit and never bothered learning-if you had a clue to begin with!"
So...let me get this straight, as I wasn't watching the WWF at this time. Heenan fires the BB in November '89, but they were still booked to wrestle at the SurSeries with Haku and Andre? I know Tully failed a drug test and he was fired before the actual show and Bobby took his place. I also read that the Series was Arn's last WWF match. Was this match aired before or after the Series?
@fivebearrugs This was aired on the Saturday Night's Main Event right after the Survivor Series PPV; but the match was pre-recorded on an earlier date for that Saturday post-Survivor Series airing. I think the storyline of Heenan "firing" Tully & Arn was created to make more sense out of their real departure from the company.
@danteras23 You do of course realize that was scripted because Tully got fired and Arn was leaving right????? Heenan was just saying what he was told to right???? PSST,,, "Its not real". And on that note Heenan was the greatest manager of all time! In the words of JJ Dillon himself On Legends roundtable
@danteras23 You do of course I was being sarcastic right??? And if you knew what I was sayin you never would have made the first comment. Unless of course you were in Character yourself. be that the case I appologise!
@danteras23 Heenan tried to put them over as well as he could (they were probally one of the best teams in the WWF at the time) . They were such a good team that I didnt even think they needed a manager.
Probally would of went further if Blanchard didnt fail his drug test. Funny though I seriously doubt WWF has ever been a drug free enviroment.
@VisionofOrion The funny thing is that they didn't really need Heenan. Pretty much everyone knew who they were coming into the WWF and knew that they had been managed by JJ Dillon. It was kinda weird to see them with Heenan. I was never a big Heenan fan, so I thought he took away from what they were a little bit. They didn't fit the WWF anyway. Too cartoonish. I was glad when they came back to the NWA.
@danteras23 The way I see it is Heenan was the top heel manager, and it was a given soon after their arrival The Busters would be the top heel team. Who knows what would have happened had Tully never failed that drug test. this interview Heenan did may not ever happened.
Blanchard failed a drug test before Survivor Series and was fired before the show. I believe Blanchard said someone ratted him out to Jim Herd. From there, Blanchard's contract was torn up and Arn's salary was cut in half.
@TheJman2600 No wonder I never saw Blanchard again. Explains why Anderson went back to WCW & The 4 Horsemen REAL FAST there after. The most un-forgetful and first incident back in WCW I saw, was when him, Flair and his brother BASHED Sting, and kicked him out of the 4 Horsemen. :-)
@TheJman2600 I remember this. I didn't know about the drug problem though. And this was back in the day when, as soon as you left the Heenan Family, you became a good guy. I thought that's what would happen to the Brain Busters..But they just "vanished."
@TheJman2600 The Heenan firing them angle was created because Blanchard and Anderson were going back to WCW to re-unite the Horsemen. The angle was changed when Blanchard failed the test. He left WWF prematurely. He was then not given a contract by WCW, and later offered a low-ball deal which he declined. They didn't "return" to WCW because up to that time they had wrestled for Jim Crockett (JCP or Mid-Atlantic). JCP was purchased by Turner about a month after their original departure.
I always wondered when Bobby Heenan walked out on the Brain Busters during the match, how come JJ Dillion didn't show up at ringside for Arn and Tully? JJ was employed by the WWE at the time.
In his ROH shoot interview, he basically said they didn't want him to be an on-air talent since they already had so many managers and that, further, he was tired of being on-air.
Nov 25,1989...Sadly if I'm not mistaken I do believe that was the very last time Arn Anderson and Tully Blanchard ever teamed up together... :( ~THE END OF AN ERA~ :(
Time flies man. It's been almost 19 years to the day since I watched my first WWF PPV (1990 Survivor Series) when i was 6 years old. Seems like just yesterday
You see a LOT of similarities between JJ Dillon and Bobby Heenan, to the way they dress and sell and the way they always talk about negotiating contracts, getting title shots and money. They even talk about giving advice and "teaching" wrestlers, JJ with Luger, Heenan with the Rooster. Dillon said later that he took a lot of his stuff from Bobby Heenan who he calls the greatest manager ever.
Wasn't this their last appearance in the WWF? I think I remember Arn returning to WCW and reuniting with Flair and Ole just two or three weeks later. It's cool still seeing Arn on WWE TV from time to time.
Thanks! I wish i could post more from my FIIIIINE collection starting from April of 89' all the way to 98...then I tottally shut myself out from the time WWF after what McMahon did to Bret HARD-WORKING Hart. Then continued to be in the dark when WCW was over-taken by his shadow...BUT NOW, Ive made a come back, courtesey of JBL, who also is gone, I hope for the time being. I would really like in the meantime, make a Ultimate Warrior Scrapbook, just showing his promos, and pinfalls and wins ONLY!
I LOVED THAT PERIOD EARLY '89 UNTIL LATE 91!!!!!!!! THATS WHEN I GOT INTO WRESTLING..... I so wish The Brain Busters had hung around a bit more.. They were great.... and the Boss mans first turn as a heel against Hogan... Brilliant stuff..........
I have it, but it would be difficult to upload at thispoint, as well a more of a risk factor of getting it removed as well as my account like I did the last time when I uploaded too many WWE classic matches.
truth is tully & arn didnt draw a dime as champions & vince had them drop the belts back to demolition, there contract was up just after survivor series 89 tully failed a drug test juat prior so heenan filled in at sseries 89
I had heard that Tully failed a drug test in WWE, but their contracts were expiring and they were going back to Atlanta. When the NWA officials found out about Tully, they notified him via Ric Flair and told him he wouldn't be hired. He wrestled in Alabama and the old AWA until it folded and eventually became an evangelist. I have heard him preach on 2 occasions in my hometown.
Actually Tully failed a drug test the day before Survivor Series '89 and was fired, which was why Bobby had to take his place at the PPV. Arn went back to WCW (they were right at the end of their WWF contract anyway) but Tully did not, because of the drug test failure; so that basically was the end of Blanchard's career. This match, I'm guessing, was taped before all that, shown after the Survivor Series, and explains their departure for the TV audience.
According to Tully on the Horseman dvd, he failed a drug test immediately arriving back in wcw, this was before he signed a contract so they didnt re-sign him after that although i already know about him being released from the WWF
the way i understood it from tully's shoot he failed it prior to nov. 2nd 89 when they taped the matches used for the survivor series showdown (tully vs warrior) but vince didn't suspend him until after they got through that taping first i believe he got the call from ric flair about the wcw deal on nov 13th or 15th (?) going from memory here...
I think Arn may have been there up to the 1990 Royal Rumble (I thought I remember seeing him in it but without Heenan). I can't believe how so many Horsemen were in WWF at the time (Arn, Tully & Windham as the Widowmaker). Also Paul Roma, who became a Horseman in 1993 was also in WWF at this time, but as a lower level wrestler who usually opened up MSG cards as a face (he was frequently Jim Powers' partner).
Arn Anderson wasn't in the WWF in 1990. Barry Windham was supposed to be in Survivor Series 89 and Royal Rumble 90, but was replaced by Earthquake in SS and Red Rooser(I think, I'll have to look at the case) in the Rumble. If you can find the video cases you'll see Widowmaker listed on the backs but instead it is the ones listed above that would be in the events.
You're right. I re-watched the 90 Rumble on Christmas. I definitely remember seeing Windham on the back of the Col Video box of SS 89 in the rental stores back in the 90's. I bought the copy from them but they just sold it in the plastic case (they must have thrown out the actual box). He was supposed to be on Savage's team. Amazing how many Horsemen & future Horsemen were in the WWF at the time (Windham, Anderson, Tully, Paul Roma). Then in 1991 Flair & Sid came to WWF.
Thanks for posting - I had COMPLETELY forgotten that Heenan fired the Brain Busters right before they left WWF. After this, Arn went back to WCW, and Tully quit wrestling, right?
I have both matches (when Demolition lose the belts & when they gained them back). I also have the match from 12/31/89 where they lose the belts to the Collosal Connection (Haku & Andre). The tag team division then (& throughout the 80's) was better than it ever was or has been in both WWF & NWA. You had actual teams in the 80's (Demolition, Powers of Pain, Road Warriors, Doom, British Bulldogs, Killer Bees, Hart Foundation, Midnight Express, Freebirds, Rockers, Islanders, Twin Towers, etc).
I heard that Tully was fired for failing a drug test and that Arn Anderson went back to the NWA. This was in 1990, right around the time Cactus Jack was debuting in NWA (not YET WCW).
Arn and Tully had accepted offers from WCW to come back and and reform the 4 Horsemen. Around that time WWF had a drug test that Tully failed because he had snorted some cocaine a day or so before the test resulting in him getting Suspended w/22 days(I think) left on his contract. WCW then out about the drug test and renigged on the deal, Brining in Arn an Ole instead
Didn't heenan fire them because they lost the belts to demolition. I remember seeing that match on saturday mroning wrestling. Which was real rare to see a title change outside of Sautrday nights mian event or a Pay-per-view.
You can see the SNME logo on Jessie Ventura's microphone there. Yes, Bobby fired them because they lost the belts alright to the ROCKERS and NOT Demolition (but they WON the belts from DEMOLITION early that summer in 89'), and the Brain Busters went right back to WCW returned as the 4 horsemen. :)
weird I could have sword demolition won them back from the brain busters. Because I think and maybe im wrong but it was like august when the brain busters lost the belt. Cause I remember me and my friend where at the local mall and saw the match at sears.
some reason i can post the link but the match is on you tube of demolition winning the belts from brain busters. was to the right of this video. in related videos.
but what had the Brainbusters done wrong to explain Heenan firing them? Did anyone offer an explanation to the viewers as to why Heenan was replacing Tully at the Survivor Series?
It was Demolition who took the titles back from the Brain Busters for their 2nd title reign. I have the match. The match took place in October of 1989. Demolition lost the belts during in 7/89 (during an SNME if I remember correctly). I have the match on a tape buried in my mess of a room. I think one of the Demolition vs. Brain Busters matches was a 3 Falls Match.
It went like this - The BrainBusters beat Demolition for the titles on an SNME. Demolition regained the titles from the Busters on a Superstars taping, then this match with the Rockers happened - the belts were not involved. After that Heenan made the Andre/Haku team, who beat Demolition for the titles, only to lose them back to Demolition at WM6. Look up "list of World Tag Team Champions (WWE)" on wikipedia for the exact dates.
Also an added note, other titles changed hands on PPVs, not just the world title. The I-C title changed hands at WMIII and WMV and in the first 5 SummerSlams ever (88-92) and the 1992 Royal Rumble, the World Tag titles at WMII, WMIV, WMVI and WMVII and SummerSlam 90 and 91.
Actually, the Colossal Connection (Andre and Haku) were around at the same time as the Busters. I remember Gorilla or McMahon talking about an upcoming Rockers/Busters match (might have been the one you guys are talking about) and them making a comment that the Connection and Busters could have an issue with both teams chasing the tag titles.
Actually it wasn't that rare at all. The British Bulldogs dropped the tag straps to the Hart Foundation on a Superstars taping. Ricky Steamboat dropped the IC strap to Honky Tonk Man on a Superstars taping and then the Harts dropped the tag straps to Strike Force on a TV taping as well. Only the world strap changed hands on PPV's at the time and once a year or so at that
It's amazing how Heenan was the funniest guy ever in wrestling, but also elevated the believability of the sport. He was the only manager that ever seemed like he was giving his men in-ring advice and actually working to get his them title shots. Almost every other manager (with some acceptions) seemed more like a mere ornament. Thanks for posting, great Heenan rant.
What the hell is wrong with that guy's tv set????????? That was back in the 80's or 90's wasn't it?

Actually, Hogan dropped the World title to Andre the Giant on NBC on February 5, 1988.

Bobby Heenan is the king of managers, and he was the greatest, and one of the funniest people out there.
