i respectfully disagree. I'm a huge brad may fan, but he never did very well against top tier guys. He beat the crap outta a lot of middleweights and light heavyweights, but against guys that ray routinley fought, he didn't do so good. I have heard a lot of people's top 10 toughest of all time list, and a lot of them have larry playfair really high on their list (done cherry has him at #3 i believe). Not just fans, but former players and analysts. I don't think may is even close to top 10.

yea everyone loses though. Playfair only had 8 losses his whole career (if u count the 1 fight against secord). Rarely did he ever decisively lose. May had a couple tko's of second tier fighters in his early days (houda was apunching bag and so was malette). He also got dropped around the same time (malette and janssens). He had 1 impressive tko against jay wells though. He took some beating for big named guys. Ray had more TKO's and fought/beat the better competition. He was also never TKO'd.

If both players want to go, breaking it up is dangerous - don't want refs getting hit you know. That's a main reason why the refs wait until one wants out of it.

Besides, the fighting does serve a purpose... better to let it play out, don't bottle it up or somebody will get injured.

Fighting has been in hockey since the early 1900s and it actually makes the game safer. If a player (claude lemieux for example) plays dirty, he has to answer for it and possibly take a pounding. Hockey fights are mainly two tough guys going at it and there are unwritten rules as well. In Europe, fighting is not allowed and players routinely high-stick, check-from-behind and knee knowing that they dont have to drop the gloves.
