Middle class c. 1900 used to mean one person (male) working to support his family AND having a servent or two (wife needed someone to help pull up rugs to beat, etc, and needed a fellow to help with the horses.) so the one worker supported not only his own family but likely one or two others.
Now they try to tell you that middle class is two parents working to pay the rent
