  • Kiri is fantastic but I have a question: is it me or is she usually a bit nasal in her middle range?

  • bravo bravo dame kiri....thank you for all the hard and beautiful work, you r an inspiration to me!!!

  • I'm so happy to see Kiri and Frederica still collaborating after all these years! It brings them back to their beginnings!

  • Frederica Von Stade remarks are very articulate on Dame Kiri " I think that she has worked very hard, etc" We think of the beautiful gowns & how lovely she looks when she is singing but not a lot of us stop to think how much time, effort and sacrifice it takes to get to that point. I for one am very impressed for all that Dame Kiri has accomplished & very thankful for all the beautiful music she has given to the world.

  • Is there a DVD of THIS concert? That would be wonderful...

  • thecelticinme,

I wonder if you (or anyone)has seen the "South Bank Show" doco? Has anyone downloaded it to YouTube (after all of the legal stuff)?

  • No I haven't seen it.

  • Is that the 1991 one? It's on DVD.

  • would somebody tell me what went wrong from 4:00 - 4:12? These are MY TWO FAVORITE OPERA DIVAS. Kiri is simply amazing, Flicka is just magnetic. It is just impossible to blink when watching these two perform. If only time could stand still for them, the opera world would stay great!

  • There's nothing wrong; they are just performing the duet "Ah guarda sorella".

look for "Kiri Te Kanawa & Frederica von Stade - Volpe Gala 2006" and you'll understand why they are laughing.

  • I have seen the Volpe Gala, but it was nothing like what had happened here. If you will notice starting at 4:06 - 4:13 Flicka stopped and bit her lips and looked at Kiri, and Kiri momentarily closed her eyes like sensing something went wrong. OR, maybe you are right.

  • Totally nothing wrong here. The 'lip bite' brianmdusa comments on is the accent on the 'f' of the word "faccia" - there is totally no hesitation or 'blip' from either of these two excellent singers in this gorgeous Mozart duet.

  • Kiri sung the last 6 notes slightly lower than written and the last one came out slightly "dented" (she doesnt crack notes). You have to really listen for it. It took me 15 times listening and 5 times comparing it to the Volpe Gala. Well, that is what I hear. Im just a contralto and sometimes the soprano range is hard to hear.

  • RRydnew: thanks for your observations, but I thought it was Flicka who sung notes different from what was written. anyway, THEY ARE BOTH MARVELOUS! I was just curious.

  • Yes, one of them slid into a note or two. It's not noticeable except for the expressions on their faces!

  • Maybe it was Flicka but, I did not hear it. Kiri "dented" those notes (it happens once in a decade or two.) We contraltos have a thing for (as we want to sing that high) about hearing sopranos. Its a knack!

  • thanks everyone! I just admire those two great divas!!!!!!

  • Actually, what happened was that Kiri forgot her words from 4:02 to 4:04, and got screwed up. You'll notice she doesn't repeat the words she has been repeating and instead just does a random vowel with her lips pursed. It happens. I'm glad they had a good laugh about it. They're human, afterall.

  • I just noticed that; it seems that she forgets the lyrics for one second :)

  • Magnificent! Awesome! I wish the BBC would show this "across the pond". We are starving for this in D/FW. Thanks for posting great stuff!

  • Glad you enjoyed it :)

This was showed in a Portuguese channel (the one you can see here) and in Biography channel, dubbed in Portuguese (blah) thrice in November and is passing again this month, I think it was also showed in BBC Prime, all available in Portugal.

  • In the other hand the Classical Music DVDs can be very difficult, and in some cases impossible, to find; depending on what you want.

If you look for "spirit of the arts" here in youtube you'll find documentaries of Plácido Domingo and Cecilia Bartoli. There's also another one of Renée Fleming but I don't think it's available here yet.

  • Thanks from me as well. Kiri is #1 !!!!

  • you're welcome.

  • MÁGNIFICA!!

    Thanks!!

  • ^^ you're so welcome my dear.
