I had the crap scared out of me by a manta when I was about 5. Was out fishing with my dad and one came at the boat and swooped right underneath; it was as wide as the length of the boat, maybe bigger. When I asked my dad,he said it was a devil fish, so I was afraid he was gonna come back and turn the boat over. It's a shame this gentle creature ever got such a nickname.
te he, yah I have had some odd experiences with sea creatures, and as embarrassing as it is they were star fish and things like that. I was snorkeling with my grandpa and dad (except I pretty much stayed on the surface), anyhow- they kept pouting stare fish and sea stars (sun fish and other cool things like that) on my boogie board (or whatever it was) and every time I would freak letting the star fish and stuff to fall to the bottom to be picked up again and again and again- aauuhh good times.
i have never seen one in person just small sting rays but i think that if i ever came as close as you did to one i would freak out lol i know they are harmless but just the size of them gives me the creeps
WOW! The eerie lighting, rippling water and beautiful movement of the Manta makes me think of the creatures in the movie "The Abyss." As a diver, I'd love to encounter one of these creatures in person.
This Manta Ray is drawn to feed because of the lights. At night while diving with lights all kinds of little critters are attracted. The light on the peir atracts the critters and the Manta comes to feed. And yes this is a Manta Ray, your probably thinking about a Sting Ray, their much smaller. This Manta is small compared to many, they get huge. And for being scared, they won't hurt you.
Is that really a Manta Ray? It seems to have a big mouth for a Manta Ray. But i've only seen like, 2 or 3 different types, so I don't really know. XD But that really is cool. They're cute. And it seemed to like to show you it's belly. :P
man...that is one of the most hauntingly awesome things I have ever seen. And I don't mean awesome as in "Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure" awesome...but awesome as in awe-inspiring.
I like when i can see inside the mouth of the rays. It is cool. It is like when you are scraping out the last remaining coating of mayo from the inside of a glass mayo jar. That's whut a manta ray looks like from my point of viw.
They're not feeding it themselves. When you shine a light in the water, it attracts plankton (the manta's natural food source) so it comes to feed on its own.
And using up crucial bandwidth to be an old stick in the mud is not technologically responsible either. Somewhere right now, in a college dorm, there is a geek waiting to get online but he cannot because of you.
It eats very small krill, shrimps and whatever swims through its mouth :) Just not too big animals, like bigger fish and humans ;D HeH.. Don't worry.. Personally, I think they're kinda spooky.. Like whales! Don't know why, they're just scary.. Does anyone feel the same, or am I just mental..?
Eerie, but at least we all know that mantas are gentle creatures. :)

i wonder do fish get stuck in their slits thingy 0.o
nickeesarh 2 years ago
The slits are their gills....it's not likely, but it's possible...but water is being pumped in and out, so probably not stuck for long
gingervitus01 1 year ago
I guess from outside the water I'd be able to handle this easier !!!

I think it got it partly because it does sometimes flip boats over by accident.

how big do mantas get?
bewster3000 3 years ago
The largest get around 20 feet wide I'm pretty sure. 15 at least.
porterquarter19 3 years ago
Actually, as amazing as it is, some specimens have been known to reach almost 30 feet in width! Though typically adults get to around 15-20ft wide.

pretty sure feeding wild animals JUST so you can get the pleasure of seeing them is NOT an ecologically responsible thing to do
