I vividly remembered this incident at Sea World that occurred almost 40 years ago this month and I'll tell you, it was really frightening, watching this woman being attacked by Shamu. I was only ten years old at the time, but this is something I haven't forgotten. My heart was just breaking because she was struggling to get out of the water, but was unable to because Shamu wouldn't let her go. I thought for second that she was going to drown. Let me tell you, it was scary watching this.
i dont know what should be funny or awsome to see this or to be there ... whales should live in free nature and not in a small tank, to show stupid tourists some tricks!!
@sonnenblumele Yeah, I'm torn on the issue since I know that Seaworld rescues some animals... I think it's GREAT if they are rescued, taken there, rehabilitated, and THEN, if they aren't too far removed, sent back to their natural habitat. In a perfect world...
On April 20, 1971; SeaWorld secretary Annette Eckis was riding on Shamu at the park in San Diego, California. Eckis was clearly thrown off the whale as it thrashed around deviating from its normal routine Shamu grabbed her leg in its mouth. Shamu was coaxed into letting Eckis go, , and required 100 stitches on her leg. Shamu may have done this out of curiosity, as Eckis was wearing a bathing suit while riding the Orca, instead of the traditional wet suit that was usually worn.[2]
Since 1987 over 50% of the adult Sea World orcas have died."This is a deplorable record. Both Sea World and Annheuser-Busch, owners of Sea World, must be held accountable. The public needs to know why so many animals have died. Sea World is clearly lacking in their care and handling of these magnificent animals. It is such a waste!"Kelly Keagy-Bullock, spokesperson for the Free Corky Project,
@kiddo3027 Oh my cousin (the trainer in the video) told me that Shamu is only a marketing name and was never the name of a whale. Maybe Shamu was there before his time and he never knew about him/her? Could be.
@ronchiii - Namu was the first male captured orca - named after the area in B.C. where it happened. He was then dragged behind a boat for 450 MILES while his pod followed crying. (Look it up.) They went to catch him a "mate" from the same area and named her "Shamu" for she-Namu. Namu died within a year, and Shamu didn't live long either. Do a little digging on the history of the exploitation of orcas. You'll never look at them the same in captivity again.
@CgColleenGorman That's HORRIBLE! I'm not a fan of captivity when it's for profit and especially when it's done for any other reason other than rehabilitation. What a bummer. It reminds me (when you're describing) of elephants and how badly they do in zoos. I'm going to ask my cousin about the info you gave me.
Thanks so much. I KNOW it comes from a place of compassion, and I'm truely thankful to read your words.
@ronchiii Thank you. You can read more about Captive BS that goes on here on The Orca Project. Keep spreading the word. Here is a story about Tilikum's lonely life. I've been there many times since this trip and won't stop until there are changes. Google Seeing is Believing - Tilikum's lonely life.

Dogs attack people too sometimes. All animals can be unpredictable, just like you (humans are mammals in case you forgot).
Cheers.

@punkado68 And it's spelled "HERE little puppy..."
"Hear" is only used when referring to listening, not beckoning.

There was a whale named shamu, it was the son of shanu or something like that, but now they use the name Shamu for any adult Orca.
AquaEyedDolphin 2 years ago
Shamu means "Friend Of Namu" who was one of the first captives. Shamu was also female and died in 1971.
