  • @vickyboy96 yes they can!

  • big smoke

  • What bothered me about the book is that why couldn't lyra just ask what the Gobblers were doing in the first place rather than waiting until it happened to find out? The first half of the book she keeps asking herself and others what happens there and I'm just like why??

  • @HanghojLisa not sure, but I think in the book it says that the Alethiometer doesn´t answer all questions and not always that clearly, maybe that´s why..

  • Can a daemon turn into a fish or marine-living animal? Or is there any? Just curious.

  • @vickyboy96 yea in the book I think it was father coram who tells Lyra about this man who had to spend his life at sea because his daemon settled as a dolphin or something like that.

  • @MrCdedbdkat omg so cool, im great that there marine-living daemons, thanks btw :D

  • @vickyboy96 lol no problem I was TOTALLY OBSESSED with this book when i was younger.

  • @MrCdedbdkat lol, I just started the first book. :D

  • @vickyboy96 its awesome! haha way better than the movie!

  • @MrCdedbdkat Agreed! :D

  • i love Nicole Kidman in this movie love her as a actor but she has a hard role to play in this as the mother

really wish they made the other 2 movies !!!!

  • all in all good movie.nicole kidman is the most beutiful woman in hollywood.sexy, and super classy.

  • How could she just pull the fence-thing up at 08:08, Why couldnt Lyra do that? :S

  • The Golden Compass was a masterpiece. Philip Pullman is a genius! His ability to tell this chilling story is very important. I recomend it to be read by everyone because it raises important questions.

  • dust=sin? demons = evil? according to Mrs. whoever

  • And I hate evil daemon cutters (aka the GOB)!! Luckily Lyra got saved :)

  • You know, I actually like Mrs. Coulter better with blond hair. . .I don't know why but it seems to suite her better. And it makes her seem less evil from the start. And I love Dakota Blue Richards as Lyra! :) Good movie, AMAZING book!

  • this movies ass made by aithiest

  • The story in the book is completely different in the movie!!!

They shouldn't put 'NORTHERN LIGHTS filmed as the GOLDEN COMPASS' on the book!!!

  • What I don't understand in the book and in the movie is why can't Pan turn into a bug or something small when someone grabs them to get away. ???????

  • @Aeidial17 I think it was because Pan was in shock because he was being held by another human. A taboo in Lyra's world, even warriors in battle wouldn't touch each others daemons. I always thought of it as being 'soul molestation', so pretty distressing.

  • Sounds like people have it wrong here. When Ms. Costa said that their ancestors made a big mistake by disobeying the great authority and then brought dust into the world.... it sounds more like this; Adam and Eve brought mortality and agency into the world. Why would God be the figure that would want to take away people's agency and souls? Sounds more like what Satan wants to do

  • @andrielisilien I mean, Ms. Coulter not Costa... crap

  • I would like the adults try this 'cut' out on themselves and see how it feels.

  • This bothers me but it almost completely useless: blue eyes are recessive, but Lyra's mom and dad have blue eyes...geh...how hard is it to get contacts for actors nowadays...AND, Mrs. Coulter is described as having BLACK hair.

Kay I'm done for now. P:

  • Bad Movie, Good Books!!!!!!!

The Ending To This Movie Was Terrible, They Should Have Made It Into The Series Of Movies

  • @NaoteToneeta they where suppose to make more, but it didn't pull in enough money to become a real blockbuster.

  • "I got lost in the snow"???

WTF Do you think it's just the corner shop round the block after a snow?

  • Oh wow dakota is so cool in this movie

  • I dont know why Christians are against this movie. I am a Christian and I see alot of christian values in this movie...... loyalty, friendship, bravery, and the search for truth.

  • @tdforjesus

Really? Christians are agaisnt it? No wonder I wasnt aloud to watch it when it came out...

  • @LoveMehBesties It's because the writer of the original book was anti-catholic and wrote this story as a attack against the Catholic Church, but not all Christians are against it, it's a good story and some of us are able to take the good out of the movie

  • @jillybilly1976

Yea I agree. Ive taken good out of this movie. Not all christians are against it.

  • @LoveMehBesties

Well some of christians are. I am not though.

  • @tdforjesus The Movie Isn't The Problem to Them, It's The Books They Say It Teaches SAtanism Because, *Spoilers*, The Angel Who Claimed That he made The World, even though he didn't, Was Killed. The Movie they hate because it is assoctiated with the books

  • @NaoteToneeta

O really? Didnt know that. I havent read the books.

  • I'm part of the united church, although they didn't like the whole "atheist" part they didn't ban the book. The catholic church banned it. My opinon, is that if a book isn't full of vulgar, extreme violence and is going to scar children for life. Why ban it? I mean this book has good values and meaning.

  • why couldnt the stupid people who did the hidous experiments be shot?

  • OMG So when I was at school, a girl who is chrsitian, like I, who love this series, said this story was against her religion, I was all: WTF?

  • the church banned it cause it doesn't want anyone questioning them or thinking for themselves, just like the book says. All the more reason for people of any religion to see the movies (actually read the book-they're so much better, even though the movie's good) People can be religious without being controlled.

These books are my bibles. I met Phillip Pullman and he signed my books!

  • @RoguishBlonde What was he like?

  • @Rita3500 like a well-humored man who enjoys having a good discussion on theocracy and philosophical subject. At least to me . :)

  • @phocjame the alethiometer points to the truth like redhead said, a compass also points true north. The alethiometer could be viewed as an physical moral compass if you know what I mean.

  • anyone know what kind of cat lyras demon is?

  • @ShadowedEcho7 In the book it said Wildcat

  • can somebody please tell me whitch person is God and when

  • @thatguyinthatchair no one in this movie is god.

  • I would say starting from 7:09 is the best scene in the movie.

  • PRO TIP: Avoid any bridge if you hear a Gandalf scream.

  • Hehe, I was so convinced that Iorek (Ian McKellen) would shout; "you shall not pass" 8DDD

The books are great, but the movie is lame in all kinds of ways (too short and childish, important scenes cut out, ending sucks etc).

I quess it would have been better, if it would have been done by British. They know how to do great movies and TV-series.

But well, better have this than nothing. Still waiting for the second part of the trilogy.

    Sry, my English 8)

  • C'est un super film !

    J'adore !

  • Ian McKellan yelling and a crumbling bridge. That made my day. XD

  • @SuperTemp100wpm haha he should have shouted "fly you fool"

  • I mean't the otherway round. LOL

  • Man those adults are fucked up.

  • @GroovyAhYeh cept, if you'd been paying attention, you'd know that Billy is the one with the rat and Rodger is the one you think is ugly

  • Dude... that IS Roger... it's Billy whose dæmon gets cut away! (Instead of Tony Makarios in the book)

  • Did I hear that right in the chamber?

"He will rip your nuts Out?"

    Or is it Guts.

  • i do think the prop they used for the guillotine was well done, its just how i imagined it when i read the book

  • why does it say that this is based off the book northern lights? im pretty sure the book was the golden compass though i could be wrong.

  • original title of the golden compass was northern lights, thats why i love wikipedia!

  • Northern Lights is the exact same book as The Golden Compass. It's the (correct) British name for the book. As usual we North Americans screwed it up :)

  • hehehe part 9/11 lol

    9/11?

    get it? lol

  • @moekanz not funny

  • @moekanz Yeah, incredibly funny, Now remember the 1000's of people who lost there lives in it, then tell me its fucking funny....

  • @TheCommandingOfficer hehehhehehehe yup its still funny

  • Moekanz, your the sort of person I would like to see Mauled by a Rat, and then shot....but thats just me. :)

  • @TheCommandingOfficer thats nice, cant get what you want so you want to kill - just like the terrorists in 9/11

    well done... lol

  • in the chamber pan could have turned into a mouse and squeeze through the holes

  • @rabinomoshe either he was too weak or it was supposed to be like that. as my dad says "its a movie. they make it happen that way for a reason"

  • 1:28 she looks alot like anne hathaway

  • its cooooooooool

  • I think Nicole Kidman is acting very good there. But I hate that monkey from her.

  • Coulter is her mum. And to say the bible has no fantasy hahahahahahahahaha cracked me up

  • Nicole Kidman is a horrible witch!

  • i dont get why Marisa Coulter wants Lyra

  • @dhafniebasilio

Read the books, it makes sense.

  • I just had a thought. Why didn't Pan turn into a moth or a ant when they were about to get cut?

  • They were both freaking out, and they both can feel each other's feelings. Kind of leaves little room for logic.

  • The church banned people from seeing this. The church these days is to controlling like with prop 8, I think anyone should be able to marry whoever they want. Why does the church care?

  • Thats exactly it; they want to controle everything. It 's one of the reasons why some have banned this movie in church libraries. Thay are nothing but a benine Cult.

  • True

  • I thought the ice bridge wasn't until she followed her father to the Aurora in the ending of the book (not in the movie though, which was disappointing)

  • Yeah, I agree... The movie is totaly out. But in the book Lyra has blond hair and Marisa Coulter has brown hair!!!

  • This is very different from the books.. Still a good film do ;D

  • is she talking about puberty? omg...

  • I swear she is meant to have got kid-napped and taken there whilst the geptians were fighting. . this film is just shit.

  • I know , right? This film is totally different from the book.

  • im reading the book atm the 1st one :D 2nd chapter LD

  • dude this movie pissed me off the book kicks its ass a million times

  • TRUE DAT!!!

  • the stupidly skipped a billion parts!!!!! It's sooo boring!!!

  • "Move vees" means "sell vitamins"

  • lyra is one hell person with great decoition abilities!!...she has really a 1 super tonuge!!

  • are they gonna make a film of the other 2 books?

  • From what I've heard they're not.

  • Hey, I read the books, but I particularly didn't understand the relationship with mrs coulter and lyra. So I know that she is lyras mother, but did she really care about her lyra?

  • Yes, she did care about Lyra. ^_^

  • yeah thats why she kept look at her pic and all

  • and isnt lord asrier (or however you spell it) her dad too?

  • OOH. Daniel Craig plays Lord Ariel, I just realized that. Now Imma have an image of James Bond as him whenever I watch this movie xD.

  • The adults are sufficiently creepily indifferent.

  • Geez. The intercision part makes me shiver every time.

  • yeah it does!!

  • They are making the sublte knife movie look it up!

  • Really!?!? I thought the production has been cancelled b/c of the lack of interest in the first movie!! AWESOME!

  • its just a movie!! its not like she is a bitch in real life. stupid

  • It just means that Nicole Kidman did a good job in her acting. XDD

  • right. but when he said mrs coulter is a bitch i thought he ment the character

  • Well, in that case, it's true then. XDD

  • baahaha filly07, you made my day. :)

  • (^_^)

  • Comment removed

  • mrs coulter is a bitch here

  • How the FUck did she get caught like that?!! STUPId GIRL!!

  • I enjoyed the movie but i got to say, the book is WAAAYY BETTER!! :)

  • yes i tottally agree with that, now i started again with the book and at the part where lyra ,billi, and Roger found the laboratorium where they cut the kids, and meet the goose (Deamon) of the witch.

  • what does she mean the dust makes kids think of bad thoughts and feelings?

  • Being simple: dust is sin. It settles on human beings during puberty.

  • i still don't get the purpose of cutting daemons from kids, if they are the future of those people then why do they do something that........painful to children ? i still don't know why

  • Well, it is quite difficult to understand and there is more than one reason.

One of the reasons is because once you get older and your daemon settles, you will attrackt dust. By cutting children from their daemons they no longer attract dust; and that is one of the main reason behind it.

That's because dust itself is seen as the orgiginal sin (which mainly is about the "pleasures" of man).

  • Also it is said that persons without daemon's are much easier to control, for they do not have free thought.

  • read the other 2 books

  • LMAO "don't look back, you're almost there!" far from it. not even halfway across.

  • Yeah, i giggled at that too. But would did you expect him to say? "Oh snap you are gonna die, you are like three feet thru and still have a mile to go!" lol

  • Hah, that's what i think every time i watch that part.

  • same-the twilight books were sooooo much better than the twilight movie-but in some cases(not that i know of) the movies are better,or close,to the book ratings

  • one flew over to cuckoo's nest is an example when the movie was better, so is pride and prejudice (1995)

  • haha ok, just cause she asks "what is this place?" or whatever, doesn't mean she likes it. haha

  • mrs coulter IS her mother, says in The Subtle Knife and the Amber Spyglass!!

  • John Fa allready explained the whole story in the northern lights :p

  • The book is so much better than the movie!!! The movie is very different from the book, it doesn't let you dream or image things your own way... and it lacks a lot of details!

  • It has lots of details, but I agree with you, it doesn't let you imagine anything at all, just like Harry potter, though this movie is far better than the harry potter movies.. oh.. I'm probably going to be spammed by angry Potter fans in the upcomming week :p

  • Totally agree, I love harry potter book but the films suck genuine balls. I hope they make the next two films I want to see who they cast as Will.

  • i actually think this film has been absolutely terrible compared to the book so far, where as at the harry potter books at least have the right feel to them and dont miss out important parts of the story 8-)

  • I do agree when you mean the first and the second harry potter movie. Those were brilliant movies. But the stories were relativaly small and thus not hard to turn into a movie.

In the Northern Lights however, there was less chit chatting. Most of is content was very important and could not be skipped. It is in my opinion that they should have skipped svalbard (by moving it to the second movie), so they had more time to make a more understandable movie.

So, mayby the movie isn't that good

  • But on the whole, what has been showed was pretty faithfull to the books and quite enjoyable.

  • haha yeah, just like alot of movies made from books haha true true truuuuuuuuue!!

  • " a little cut, and all gone! You are dead and we don't have to feed you anymore." Good Story

  • lol! I was thinking the same question. but I was thinking he should turn into an ant!

  • aha an ice bridge? someone failed in the health and safety department with that one.

  • Anyway, why does Iorek take Lyra Alone to Bolvangar?

  • I think they might have done that on perpous for any kids who tried to escape?? I don't know, funny and goOd for the movie though right?? haha

  • jes mr. coulter is really her mother ! you can read it in the book !

  • is mrs coulture really her mother?

kind of has me wonderin if she really is her mother and its not a lie since how she rushed in to save her

  • I don't believe there was any evidence to suggest she wasn't. And it was told a bit differently in the book (the Gyptains told Lyra, if I recall), so it was less likely it was a lie.

  • i love this part, its so cute when her mum save her...

  • this movie tells us alot about religion, the "church" wants to give the children a "cut" (indoctorinate them) so they would avoid "unpleseant feelings" (sex)

  • but doesnt the church want ppl to have sex so they can have kids, so they can teach more of God, I seriously dont get how this could be related to God in any way, ppl just look far more into things/.

  • I love how you just said that to me!

Cause I did read the books, It was about two years ago, so I was just asking because I forgot a little.

  • if you'd read the books then you'd know that "the authority" is not god, just the oldest of the angels who claimed to be the creator you "fucking idiot prick!!!" :)

  • true truw

  • -_-

  • No, read the books man!

eveybody bitchs about poeple talking about god on here.

I am an athiest, i dont belive in any way.

but the trilogy is about destroying god, and undoing his works (mainly death)

  • dudee i read the books liek 3 years ago

  • i agree just cause you belive in god does not mean you can watch thi movie its not like by watching it gods going to kill you

  • Oh, I hate when people tell me that God will punish me if I do something as simple as watching a stupid fantasy movie, horrer movie, think romanticly about a guy before marrage, etc...

  • Then they are not are not truly Christian and loving. Just judgemental and such. *hugs* I love fantasy and finds it has many of wisdom, views, important lessons and values. The bible itself has some fantasy to it. I think believing in things is important and to respect ppl.

  • It's a good movie and has vaules...which some Christians today lack. I'm a Christian who is open to views and have wanted read the book. Seems to me looking for the truth is a main theme here. :D Which is awesome.

  • The world needs more open-minded people like you. ^.^

  • Lyra is in pressure and confused. So is her daemon [pan], so he can't change! }=:

  • that kid has a fucked up nose!!!! hahaha is it real

  • lmao "URIK BERNISON'S GUNNA KILL YOU! HE'LL RIP YOUR GUTS OUT" XD

  • Yeah...wooooooww...I just finished reading the book. They switched things around quite a bit in the movie.

  • um, anyone else having LOTR flashblacks? maybe it's just ian mckellan's voice but when iorek shouted "run!" i kept expecting him to shout "fly, you fools!"

    lol.

  • omg yes!!!! :D

  • I was just to write that...He indeed sounds like Gandalf in LOTR..^^

  • Mr. Ian McClellan! (Dunno if I spelled that right...)
