Surely just about ANYTHING could have been deleted and this scene left in.
AFAIC,
this was probably the only good scene in the whole movie...
and it was left out!
A movie along the lines of "another trip to the edge of Time and the Universe" would have been much better than Picard fighting against his younger anti-self clone.
People often think that Star Trek is about phasers and space battles and all this other technological stuff. But I think what a true fan really loves about Trek has always been its message of family and love. It's loyalty and compassion and wisdom. I am 42 and I don't remember a time in my life I didn't love Star Trek. From early elementary school on. This was a great scene. Right up there with some of the best ever from "The Undiscovered Country".
Actually, the Star Trek was changed into an action genre during the Neoliberal economic reform. Then the audience also started to identify with the phasers, war and cynicism. Gene Roddenberry died in 1991, and his franchise was about all the good values in the future. The tragedy of this is the loss of that Star Trek.
.............Did they really just delete the best scenes to piss the fans off? This is a really nicely written and executed scene! The stupidity of some people is unbelievable!
@spikelive What's wisdow, if you can humiliate another person in a trivial contest, or you are the last man standing with a gun? This is how the Neoliberals think.
Well you picked a good movie to fan-edit, but what become of this? I see that this clip was posted in 2008. Did you finish? Did you shelve the project?
I don't get what everyone is excited about. I've been a trekkie for 40 years and no matter how many good the deleted scenes are they cannot save this movie. It was poorly written and badly directed. It turned my favorite characters into cartoons of themselves and it destroyed the Star Trek franchise. It was nothing like the TNG that I'd grown to love so much. I was both insulted and hurt by how badly this movie was done.
Such a wonderful touching scene. I teared up when Data said he'd miss Picard...These deleted scenes add so much, but they delete them because they want to focus on action and fighting. Kinda against what ST is about.
Well, I can see why they deleted this scene. Look at all that meaningful character interaction and satisfying attempts to close the book on the TNG series! Who needs that, when we can have Picard pointlessly shooting the shit out of monsters in dune buggies instead?
God! Now I understand that wine pouring scene at the end of NEMESIS. These were bookends that told you that this was the end of the Picard stories. Why did they leave it out? Curse you, Sumner Redstone!
This has so much meaning. I love TNG and had a tear in my eye when I saw data blow himself up on Nemesis. I really do hope Patrick & the rest of the crew somehow make another movie. Even if its mainly following Riker & Troy on the Titan with only passing reference to the Enterprise. Atleast the journey and harsh moral reminds star trek brings would continue.
love this scene, good job, having seen all the seasons of TNG its awesome to see how far Data has come and Patrick Stewart always has such a presence when he plays Captain Picard
@jaymorpheus11 I dunno about Voyager, I think they went as far as they could with that show (they did get home, after all). As for DS9, the Dominion war could still make for an interesting story. It followed a series of books after the show went off the air (which included the Enterprise-E) so I know for a fact that the Dominion is still major threat in the Star Trek canon. Lots of room to explore there. It will never happen, sadly.
If you hadn't mentioned it, I probably wouldn't have noticed. I'm not saying there aren't flaws, but they didn't detract from the scene enough that you'd notice them without being told.
Excellent work. It could have used more work around the outlines and the first effects shot was overexposed. But all in all EXCELLENT job! I also like the scene but it does slow down the movie. It's good for the DVD cut but not for a theatrical cut.
This scene summarizes the relation between Captain Picard and Mr. Data. Ironically foreshadows many things that will never happen; while leading the audience in the wrong direction, yet, I think and I feel this is one of the best scenes ever between the two of them. I guess many of us have felt the same way Picard felt when Mr. Data died... Who hasn't cried when seeing a good friend leaving while saying goodbye.
My friend, you did well. I went to show it to someone on the DVD and I then realized what you did with the music AND visuals. I had not yet seen the "before", only the after. Your work was exquisite. Anyone who disagrees has no taste so their opinion wouldn't matter to me anyway. Taste is so subjective. I've been editing for a long time and it is a joy to see art on YouTube that shows passion&talent- not foolish butchery. BRAVO!
I'd not seen this scene. Very touching. This seems much more like a signal to the end of the next gen era. Esspecially how Data, after all the years of being tutored by Picard in humanity is able to help counsel him and Picard in turn is able to open up to him and talk about his own feelings. Very fitting given that Data is right about to become First Officer.
@pscott90 Yeah, and it makes you consider that, when Picard talks about not having children, Data is as close to a son as he'll ever have - which only reinforces that tragedy of his later decision. Why the hell did they cut this but leave all that Tusken Raider shit in?
While I didn't particularly enjoy Nemesis and thought it could have been much better, this scene is truly fantastic and captures the spirit of the television series the movies were based upon. Very sad yet beautiful scene illustrating all the years that have passed for the TNG crew and all the adventures they had. I grew up watching TNG when it originally aired so when I watch this scene I feel a great deal of sadness knowing this was the last time the cast would be together for a movie.
@jkarani - Brent Spiner often mentioned the irony of playing an inorganic " man " who could never truly experience old age, illness or death* ( * That last unless Data was just completely beyond repair / unable to function at any level ). Vaporizing him when the Scimitar blew up burned ALL his bridges for good.
@knoxvilleguy2 Except that Data's memory was copied to his brother B-4 before it happened, a not so subtle hint at his Spock-style resurrection. It even happens in the backstory to the new Star Trek movie.
@CaptainPimpSlap - I think B-4 will have his brother's memories to a degree, but he won't be a " clone " of Data because he was " inferior ', at least as far as his behavior & ability to comprehend was / is concerned. Like loading the " personality " of HAL - 9000 onto an old fashioned Commodore 64 computer or something similar.
@knoxvilleguy2 That doesn't mean he can't be upgraded. Data himself received an upgrade in the form of the emotion chip created by their father (20 years after Data was constructed). Incidentally, the installation of that same chip by La Forge into B-4 is what allowed "Data" to to assert himself in B-4. Also, Data had been working somewhat closely with Commander Maddox in the field of positronic nets, hoping to be able to create Androids like himself.
@CaptainPimpSlap - He could, in the show, but Brent Spiner has pretty much declared that he WON'T play Data or any of his " brothers " in the future, because ( according to him ) he's a human actor playing a character who is - barring any any accidents or major malfunctions - immortal,
It would have to be another actor playing Data or one of his brethren in the future, if the TNG series was revived or picked up again or cont'd in films.
@knoxvilleguy2 It's more likely he doesn't want to rather than can't. He's been playing the character for so long he's probably got actor fatigue. It was established in the episode "Inheritance" that Data -does- age.
@CaptainPimpSlap - Yeah, pretty sure he dosn't want to. He could play his own " father " & then Arik Soong in the " Enterprise " series easily, because they were human & aged, natcherly.
@knoxvilleguy2 It's a shame, too. Ironically, he never got promoted despite arguably having the most character development out of the entire cast. Spiner's acting was top notch and he really should have won an Emmy or something for it...Data was always my favorite character in the series (and in sci-fi in general) and I always wanted to see him move up the chain...he would have finally become XO of the Enterprise and a full-blown Commander if he hadn't died.. ¦c
@CaptainPimpSlap - Ah, what would've been. If he'd been promoted during TNG it would've messed with the dynamic of the series & movies - although Worf was transferred to DS9 after the TNG finale & after the 1st movie - But I guess Spiner wanted to send Data out on a high note with a heroic death.
I wonder if they could do another Star Trek TNG movie because of the advancements in computer animation! just look at the new TRON. Jeff Bridges is like 20 times younger!
@oddjobs74 - Where's the SENSE in deleting such a meaningful scene ? It deals with transitions - Will & Deana leaving for the Titan, the imminent death of Cmdr. Data, the possible opening of relations with the Romulans. It had a lot of significance.
" Hey, let's have a space desert dune buggy chase scene instead ! "
@knoxvilleguy2 I guess being a Knoxville guy they don't "learn ya in readin comperhention too much" or maybe "you dont read no good" I said this was the only scene in the movie that made any sense..The point I was making is it is UNFORTUNATE they cut it out.
It’s because sadness and happiness are very close to each other in the brain. And when signals in a neural net are very strong, they overflow to adjacent areas. So we may cry when we are happy, and laugh when we are sad.
The ending of Nemesis is by most the best scene I have ever seen in a Star Trek movie. I can understand why they left it out cause it is adressed in a lot of other scenes, sometimes it is hidden between the images ;)
I just cannot begin to fathom why would they delete this scene a scene that indeed capture the very soul of TNG. And it is so ironic that Data would not be around much longer to witness the new worlds.
THIS CREW WILL ALSO BE IN MY HEART JUST AS OTHER CREWS OF STAR TREK.
MY FELLOW STAR TREK FRENDS THE SERIES MAY BE GONE BUT REMEMBER WHAT GUINAN SAID TO PICARD: "AS LONG AS THERE IS A HANDFULL OF PEOPLE TO KEEP THE SPIRIT ALIVE YOU WILL PREVAIL."
Holy shit. Holy tap dancing bunnies shit. This was cut and the rest of the movie wasn't? It is like they really wanted to stop making movies so anything good had to go.
@MrData 87: Yes he is. B4 is retarded, and even if he does turn out to be a fully functional Soongian android he would not be Data any more than Lore was Data.
When I saw this in the movie theater, with my friends, it was, and is, a terrific movie. When Data sacrifices himself to save his friends, and his ship, it made not only myself cry, but the whole audience was in tears. Please bring Data back.....
If these deleted scenes had made the final cut it would have been a substantially better film. Supposedly the director was an complete idiot who didn't understand the characters -- he even assumed Geordi was an alien.
@TheDarkFrontier I could not agree with you more. This scene seemed to really fit into the movie. After all the years since I watched the first episode of StarTrek in the 60's to the Next Generation, to Deep Sleep Nine, Voyager and finally Enterprise I found the interpersonal relationships in The Next Generation, especially between Captain Picard and Data to be the most genuine and heartfelt. Even thought Data was supposed to be devoid of emotions, he showed emotions in a very subtle manner.
With the end of Data in this movie this scene should not have been deleted. In my opinion it was a mistake. I found the episode to be somewhat sad with Data being destroyed in the end and this scene fit perfectly with the ending. It had no business being on the editors floor.
Totally agree! This movie wasn't what it could've been anyway, and I do think the death of Data was severely mishandled, but leaving this scene out was criminal at best, and downright destructive at worst. It is a well written scene, and establishes the end of an era through Picard and Data's eyes. This is what Nemesis needed more of.
@TheDarkFrontier They edited a ton of great stuff from that movie that would have made it better. I hated it when I first saw it but rewatched it today, it's not that bad of a film. But the added footage they cut out (over forty minutes) really would have made it a better film.
Exactly! It wouldn't hurt to rework the ending of the film too, which was basically a cut and paste of The Wrath of Khan's ending. Still, Nemesis was the first time TNG had seemed like it was a film, whereas the other three seemed like episodes, and not film storylines.
It is ashame that Nemesis cut a lot of the character moments in favor of the action scenes, since it would have show how much the crew grew together over the last 15 years.
This is a truly excellent scene; shame on Paramount for letting Stuart Baird take it out. I admire the guy as an editor, but you don't go hiring someone who's never seen an episode of TNG to do a film based on it...period. Both Patrick Stewart & Brent Spiner were awesome in this, and i feel that many similar moments should've been reinstated for the Blu-Ray collection.
This was a fantastic scene, sick of movies catering for other people, this is Star Trek!!!! Oh and this hits home to me more, since my best friend is getting married next year in the summer
It is a good scene... they could have left it in (not instead but additionally to "Blue Skies") and it may have given the movie the more personal touch it needed. However, I do see how it may have impacted the pace of the movie at that point.
Its a nice scene. Loads of flims have good scenes like this cut, because movie reviewers every time say 'it dragged' when I have never met anyone who ever said that about the films in question. They paint the public as children with ADD.
Oscar caliber acting; but as a protracted scene I see how some of the script doesn't seem ironed out, the word choices being too impersonal for this scene, therefore flattening out the mood instead of augmenting it as intended; that's why I think it was pulled. Its too bad too because Stewart & Spiner are giving this script what it wanted. I bet it was a tough call for the director to cut it, but when it comes to the tempo of the story he probably decided on being safe rather than sorry.
This is a great scene that not only comments on the human condition and shows depth of character but also foreshadows Data's sacrifice (Data: "the choices I have made lead me here as well - I cannot foresee a reason to leave" - "oh Data, you never know what's over the horizon"). It rivals Data & Picard's discussion about Shinzon & B4 before the final battle as the best scene of the film. I have no idea how this scene got cut and the scenes with Worf drunk and Data singing were left in....
@jamieball Hear, hear... Now that I have seen some of the missed out scenes of the "Nemesis" I get to realize how crippled it actually was after leaving the scenes out. Trying to cut the length of the movie? So what damn it if the last movie of the legendary TNG would have lasted more that some idiot producer thinks is fine enough!? Nemesis was not a good way to say farewell to a decade of legendary achievements made by Picard's crew!
good job =) you could try adding the sun flare hitting all the screen right at the end. as if the sun is rising and "whiting out" the screen. if that makes sense.
This was so fitting. Why would they cut out this scene? Other scenes could have gone in place of this one. Star Trek TNG was more about the crew dynamic and interaction than it was phaser battles and explosions. Oh well. Thank you for showing this!
Shame this didn't make the cut, so much better than buggy rides on planet American Desert. Actually most of the deleted scenes capture the spirit of TNG.
The action scenes would've been good for the series, which could be overly verbose at times, & they could've put more moments like this in their TNG movies.
The aging thing I admit takes me out of the show for a second, but I think it is a matter of 'what are you going to do'? By making a character that can't age there's not much they can do but just sort of pretend he hasn't aged. That being said, Brent Spiner is one of my favorite actors, and there is nothing wrong with aging, it is just that androids don't age so it is like a constant small plot inconsistency. I can get over it.
Yes, I think there was too much emphasis on action for a wrap up show and the plot was too simple. I would consider the season finale of tng to be the proper ending, though it lacked direct 'moving on' scenes like this, it reviewed the early episodes and a potential future implying that things would change. But yeah, nemesis was my least favorite of the star trek movies due to it's simple action plot, especially in the second half, that I didn't enjoy that much.
This would have been a great scene to be in the film! Although some of the questions that Data put and the reaction to drinking wine he would have already known from the15 years spent on the Enterprise! I guess this was intended for those unfamiliar with Star Trek! But a great scene indeed! Hopefully there will be a Director's Cut to the film in the future! I hated this film when i first saw it, but now, being a bit wiser I really love it! In some respects it is better that The Wrath Of Khan!
I thought the exact same thing, this deleted scenes would have given the film more character development and a deeper connection with the characters. The Enterprise crew is a family that has been collaborating together for 15 years and they need the audience to understand/feel that. The series provided a lot of character development but not everyone has seen the series and this is a movie for everyone.
Surely just about ANYTHING could have been deleted and this scene left in.
AFAIC,
this was probably the only good scene in the whole movie...

@oddjobs74 - Where's the SENSE in deleting such a meaningful scene ? It deals with transitions - Will & Deana leaving for the Titan, the imminent death of Cmdr. Data, the possible opening of relations with the Romulans. It had a lot of significance.

I JUST FOUND MY FAVOURITE SCENE OF THIS MOVIE!

It's a meaningful exchange that establishes what happens to some of the characters, and also a good exchange between Picard and Data.

@BlackmoonUK
Yeah it does kinda hint at it, but it would've been better than watching them outrun machine gun armed dune buggies across the desert :)
TheDarkFrontier 1 year ago
@TheDarkFrontier I could not agree with you more. This scene seemed to really fit into the movie. After all the years since I watched the first episode of StarTrek in the 60's to the Next Generation, to Deep Sleep Nine, Voyager and finally Enterprise I found the interpersonal relationships in The Next Generation, especially between Captain Picard and Data to be the most genuine and heartfelt. Even thought Data was supposed to be devoid of emotions, he showed emotions in a very subtle manner.
zorgen123 9 months ago
With the end of Data in this movie this scene should not have been deleted. In my opinion it was a mistake. I found the episode to be somewhat sad with Data being destroyed in the end and this scene fit perfectly with the ending. It had no business being on the editors floor.
zorgen123 9 months ago
@zorgen123
TheDarkFrontier 9 months ago
@TheDarkFrontier They edited a ton of great stuff from that movie that would have made it better. I hated it when I first saw it but rewatched it today, it's not that bad of a film. But the added footage they cut out (over forty minutes) really would have made it a better film.
MrMrmethodacting 7 months ago
@MrMrmethodacting

Yeah. It's a bit of a shame that the director decided to cut character moments for the battle of between the Romulans-Enterprise against the Remans.
Bartman954 1 year ago 3
This is a truly excellent scene; shame on Paramount for letting Stuart Baird take it out. I admire the guy as an editor, but you don't go hiring someone who's never seen an episode of TNG to do a film based on it...period. Both Patrick Stewart & Brent Spiner were awesome in this, and i feel that many similar moments should've been reinstated for the Blu-Ray collection.

It is a good scene... they could have left it in (not instead but additionally to "Blue Skies") and it may have given the movie the more personal touch it needed. However, I do see how it may have impacted the pace of the movie at that point.

MazeleyFanClub 2 years ago 5
Its a nice scene. Loads of flims have good scenes like this cut, because movie reviewers every time say 'it dragged' when I have never met anyone who ever said that about the films in question. They paint the public as children with ADD.
The inner light is a great episode.
CmdrTobs 2 years ago
Oscar caliber acting; but as a protracted scene I see how some of the script doesn't seem ironed out, the word choices being too impersonal for this scene, therefore flattening out the mood instead of augmenting it as intended; that's why I think it was pulled. Its too bad too because Stewart & Spiner are giving this script what it wanted. I bet it was a tough call for the director to cut it, but when it comes to the tempo of the story he probably decided on being safe rather than sorry.
xtopperx 2 years ago 2
This is a great scene that not only comments on the human condition and shows depth of character but also foreshadows Data's sacrifice (Data: "the choices I have made lead me here as well - I cannot foresee a reason to leave" - "oh Data, you never know what's over the horizon"). It rivals Data & Picard's discussion about Shinzon & B4 before the final battle as the best scene of the film. I have no idea how this scene got cut and the scenes with Worf drunk and Data singing were left in....

Nemesis focused too much on action than the characters of the real TNG tv series...
The deleted scenes should have been added in post production...

jamieball 2 years ago 6
@jamieball Hear, hear... Now that I have seen some of the missed out scenes of the "Nemesis" I get to realize how crippled it actually was after leaving the scenes out. Trying to cut the length of the movie? So what damn it if the last movie of the legendary TNG would have lasted more that some idiot producer thinks is fine enough!? Nemesis was not a good way to say farewell to a decade of legendary achievements made by Picard's crew!

Actually most of the deleted scenes capture the spirit of TNG.

brav0wing 2 years ago 7
The aging thing I admit takes me out of the show for a second, but I think it is a matter of 'what are you going to do'? By making a character that can't age there's not much they can do but just sort of pretend he hasn't aged. That being said, Brent Spiner is one of my favorite actors, and there is nothing wrong with aging, it is just that androids don't age so it is like a constant small plot inconsistency. I can get over it.
johnniemoonwalker 2 years ago 3
Yes, I think there was too much emphasis on action for a wrap up show and the plot was too simple. I would consider the season finale of tng to be the proper ending, though it lacked direct 'moving on' scenes like this, it reviewed the early episodes and a potential future implying that things would change. But yeah, nemesis was my least favorite of the star trek movies due to it's simple action plot, especially in the second half, that I didn't enjoy that much.
johnniemoonwalker 2 years ago
that was sweet. <3

In some respects it is better that The Wrath Of Khan!
brav0wing 2 years ago
KHAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
sausageslaps 2 years ago 3
I thought the exact same thing, this deleted scenes would have given the film more character development and a deeper connection with the characters. The Enterprise crew is a family that has been collaborating together for 15 years and they need the audience to understand/feel that. The series provided a lot of character development but not everyone has seen the series and this is a movie for everyone.
