Rob, I noticed you said a lot of theory does not apply to guitar nowadays. I simply find this untrue I was only able to grasp guitar after learning how to read music. Then everything clicked.
I'm a cellist and I was going to try and teach guitar to myself because I realized it was built in half steps. I knew a lot of theory and thought I could do it on my own, but I realized that the chord structure use is very situated with the 7th chords and I didn't realize that at the time. Like a C chord, I tried to put in CEG thinking it would make a C major chord, but in fact the correct fingering for what constitute a C chord is CEG# (very confusing indeed).
I would like to see some lessons about how to figure out which scales and chords to use once you find the melody notes of a song, and how to figure out which chords and scales go with the melody to add to the melody line.
I wish i had a clue what you were talking about cos it sounds like some good shit. I knew the guitar was difficult but i didn't realise how hard it could get!
hey cool video. an open D chord is not an inversion though. an inversion is when you have a chord tone in the bass instead of the root. example the 3rd in the bass = first inversion 5th in the bass equals second inversion...i might be missing something just never heard an open D referred to as an inversion. good video though lots of useful stuff
I always had a hard time with music theory I've been playing for 5 years I listen to music that requires alot of understanding of the guitar progressive metal, flamenco, blues, jazz, and I still don't know exactly what I'm doing,I'm just a physical guitar player, but lately I've been buckling down and I've tried to study the modes, and this lesson certantly helped me understanded in a easier way
im doing the same as kangos7.. but you have fat fingers and a guitar with low ass action so i cant see your fingers move.. it makes it kind of hard.. :P
I like theory now, but I'll admit I wasn't a natural to it.. I always learnt by ear, but when I started teaching I realised it was essential for some things, specifically modal improv.
It is useful... I took piano to focus on my theory and guitar is my main instrument... my teacher is classical/ jazz so I learn alot of this sort of theory (reference to video) strictly for guitar and different picking techniques
What does it mean for it to be in the "key" of something?
