  • Comparing an Ampeg SVT which is one of the greatest bass amps ever to a GK which is one of the shittiest bass amps ever is a waste of time

  • hey are you selling the rb

  • jesus, i wish i could find a bass player like you in san diego.

  • i dont think it matters what kind of amp you have as long as its powerful and have an eq and a compressor would help smooth it out.

  • HA! The cat goes running through at 2:23! LOL! Not to pleased one would presume...

  • TUBES ROCK!

  • I love the cat flyin buy!

  • The Tube Sound of a Genz benz Steamliner is 900watts and its only 6 Lbs and Two cabs one is 2x10 with 1x12 and the second cab 1x15 for earthquake no twitter needed on that one .. The Ampeq is just to heavy for the Road..

  • in general there is no comparison. I played solidstate for many years until I could afford a tube head. the low end is so much fuller and more responsive, the high end is warmer, there is more volume and more tone. the drawback is a big increase in weight in most cases, but if that's a concern just go for an Orange Terror Bass - 500 watts and around 10 lbs.

  • @tyronehuff or perhaps a pre that splits and sends two outs, one to a 100 watt tube power amp (driving a guitar 4x12 cab) while the other drives a bridged Crest pro series power amp, this could easily power a 2x18 cab which should balance well with the upper bass-mids from the 4x12...the end result would probably be a sweet overdriven bite with an impacting 50 hz thud accompaning it

  • @tyronehuff I have a Terror Bass head, sickest amp ever

  • I have a GK Backline 350 and I LOVE the sound I get through my David Eden cabinet. I play a 6 string Ibanez SR506. Active Bartolini pickups. I find the biggest difference between tube amps are the more volume with tubes, but as said in the video, tubes aren't good at softer volumes and aren't as versatile. You really have to look at the types of gigs you're playing. I do a lot of jazz and blues, so the solid state amp works for me a lot better. If I were doing more rock and punk, use tubes.

  • With the AMPEG...your notes are all dipped in warm honey.

  • Well you have the ampeg running way louder, I'm convinced you can get closer to that tone with the GK

  • ampeg sounds way better! kind of like geddy or chris squire punchy over driven bass

  • I have a new video up of the ampeg svt vr vs. mesa 400+ .

  • I like the solid-state nastiness of the GK. I'm seriously looking onto the 800rb. Thank you!

  • I will post a video this week about the ampeg svt vr and you will hear all the tone differences and the power and clarity

  • swr wow tone death runs high on this page, ampeg svt vr can not be touched. if you don't hear the tone difference or the power of the low end then you should quit playing bass all together. lol people who are to cheap and too weak to have a great head like the ampeg svt are posers.

  • here is the bottom line the best sounding bass head out today that can rival with the mesa 400+ and svt vr would be the aguilar db751. I used this head on a gig last year in ny state and was blown away by the svt like tone and power. 950 watts wow. the amp even has circuits that will alow distortion if you want. 45 lbs can't beat that. so if I had the money the aguilar db751 would be my touring rig of choice

  • It's unfortunate that tube amps are so delicate and have to be handled very gently when transporting...especially when the tubes are still hot. Not to mention that it's expensive to maintain (tubes are big bucks and biasing is costly labor...unless you know how to do it properly yourself. With that said, tube amp sound is by far the better sound....you can actually express your mood thru a tube.

  • @grota66 yeh your right the tubes are fragile but I get about 40 gigs out of the 6550's at about 160.00 a set 4-5 hundred a year for the tone but worth it

  • @mikewrightify I hear ya man....the love you put thru the strings is the love the tubes give back to ya.

  • it's funny to see what some dummys write on hear, tube amps will allways sound better than a solid state amp. no comparison, thouse who cut the svt down just can't afford it or are to little to carry it. period. if you truly hate the svt tone then you have bad hearing and shoulf just quit playing. so we don't have to hear your awful solid state rig live.

  • hey how do you set the balance pot on your svt

  • thanks for the Vid. AMPEG wins. Can i paint your livingroom please?

  • I think RB sounds way better. VR doesn't really sound warm and fat as AD200B for example

  • @PushedBox rb sounds better than the vr noway you have bad tatse and bad hearing I have a gk 1001rb as a back up I would never use the rb unless my 2 tube amps were out of service. the mesa 400+ and svt vr all tube are the best ever

  • @mikewrightify ok, let it will be a bad taste and and a bad hearing but I like RB sound more than VR. AD200b or Bassman 300 sounding hundred times better than VR IMO

  • I just like the cab stickers :)

  • In my exp Solid State amps mix in the the guitars/band a little better. and tubes stand out a little more. it really depends on whether you want to blend in/compliment or stand out/shine.

  • One of these dislikes is from that cat...

  • Like if you saw the cat at 2:20 - 2:23

  • Comment removed

  • shouldve set both amps flat, turned that boost down, and just plugged directly in no signal cuttin w all those pedals that arent that high end

  • Actually the best amp I have ever owned is the Gallien-Krueger MB Fusion. It has three tubes in the preamp Very warm or very bright sounding. I can get any tone from Markbass, SWR, Genz Benz to Ampeg with it.... oh and yes it still can get that Killer GK tone as well. And it weighs 5.5lbs!!!

  • i hear no difference.gk sounds better

  • what is the best for you? ampeg or gallien krueger?

  • was that a rat that ran across the room, lol 2:22

  • Those two amps have totally different preamp voicings and general tones. Try comparing an original solid state SVT III to an SVT or V4 and then you can more easily judge the difference, which there isn't a bunch honestly...

  • Tubes are good, but the SVT tone stack is awful in my opinion. It's very boxy sounding, as you can hear in this clip. The GK had a more solid bottom end. The SVT has it's low end rolled off and has a big hump at 200Hz to make up for it. You can not get rid of that preset EQ curve.

Much better examples of tube amps are Mesa and the new Hartkes.

Having said that, I don't like the GK EQ stack either.

  • @DavidRavenMoon are you tone death?? I have been playing svt's for 30 years and have had gk's they are very harsh and sound thin, svt is the best. most people cut them down because they can't afford them

  • @mikewrightify You have to set the RB the right way, and they sound great when Flea uses them. Not my my favorite SS amp though. I sold my RB and got a Mesa 400+. I like tubes, but I don't like SVTs. The Mesa sounds a lot better, and it even has more tubes. ;) SVTs are a one trick pony and they are boxy sounding. You also can't get them to sound clean. I'm not tone death and have been playing for the last 43 years. I also build basses and have my own line of bass pickups... SGD Lutherie.

  • @DavidRavenMoon I use a mesa 400+ at rehearsles good amp and I do like the sound of the mesa 400+. my vr has better tone than the mesa, but the mesa to me too has a more pleasing sound over all. I run a a=b box so I can run both channels of the boogie together. but I play the vr more on gigs. it sounds great with my fender jazz bass. the ampeg only gets boxy with bad tubes and old strings. the amp is made with a great mid control. like I have said I have both amps .

  • @DavidRavenMoon the first mid control is set at 220hz which is low mids the low end runs at 40hz. the vr also has a bass cut. I run mine at 2 on the volume, mids at 800hz -4 cut and the bass at 12 o'clock and have a wonderful tone. the new hartke amps are not tube amps or the mesa's. in fact mesa stop making tube amps because they couldn't compete with ampeg

  • @mikewrightify You mean the new Hartke and Mesa amps don't have a tube power amps. They have tube pre-amps. The Hartke sounds nice, but I felt it lacked a little warmth. But they seem to have gotten a bunch of former SVT users to switch. What I dont like about the SVT is it has a preset EQ curve. The low end is rolled off, and there's a big bump at 250Hz to simulate low end. The Ultra Lo switch notches the mids. You cannot set the EQ flat on that amp. This makes it too boxy and colored for me.

  • mmmm spector

  • great review....but the dog on 2:22 is the best :)

  • Ok guys I will get on this debate myself. I play bass in a touring band. I will be buying the Ampeg Svt450H 450 watt Head. I currently am not playing thru that head on any of the videos. Can anyone come to any of my videos and tell if im playing thru a solid state head our a tube head? I challenge anyone to take a guess. You might be surprised. Please no evil comments....hahaha

Sub me and visit me on my channel and/or type in

12th street gypsys on the search area of the main page.

    Adam

  • @12thstreetgypsysbass yeh I can tell, the 450 is a very good solid state rig though

  • @mikewrightify plus some people don't have good ears

  • @mikewrightify You say you can tell. So Am I playing thru a solid state amp or tube? Check my videos out and hit me back. I know on a guitar amp it's easy to tell. However, I think it's much harder to tell with todays technology. Anyway, you say you can tell. So tell me, what do you think tube or solid state? You will be suprised....

  • @12thstreetgypsysbass your chanell is not available and I can't find any videos of your band. I have a ampeg svt 450, 2 pro, classic and svt vr all tube right now. the 450 is a nice solid state amp the preamp and tone is good but not a svt all tube. videos recorders on line will not let the frequency band come through, you have to hear them in person. I have played pro for 20 some years and have had all types of rigs on stage. the svt all tube versions are the best. mesa 400+ and orange 200 too

  • I find the tube head to just have a much, more accepting, more out there tone. I fucking love it.

  • Solid state gives a more pleasant sound...

  • I just bought an SVT-VR and matched 810AV to replace my old workhorse, a first generation Ashdown ABM 500 EVO and matched 410H. There is no comparison between the two rigs. There's no way to get an accurate representation of the sound from an SVT-VR over a camcorder and most computer speakers. It is an absolute wall of sound that travels through you. At first, the tone may sound thin or midi, but plug it in alongside a DW set and a Super Reverb or a JCM800, and the tone is perfect. Amazing.

  • I have owned SVT's and other tube bass amps. Now have a Markbass head that weighs 6 lbs. The only thing I feel I have lost from my SVT is 74 extra pounds I had to lug around and buying stupid tubes. Glad SVT works for some people, but those days are gone for me.

  • Well, this sucked...thanks anyway.....

  • tube amps are great, my solid state bass amp sound nice but it's just a little lacking based on how the tube amps sound, not sure how to describe it

  • @GMSamuelRhine tube amps have a nicer sine wave and distort nicer when you dig in solid state amps can never acheive this natural sound ever.

  • @mikewrightify yes that's it exactly

  • you don' have to bi amp it's a 300 rms mono amp channel 2 slaves off the amp that is when you plug in to channel 1 and 2 it splits the power . plug in to 1 and it's 300 rms

  • Nice job!

  • i love the sound of the tube amp . and how can you flat top a solid state amp when it has all of that over head ? i was gonna get a gk combo at 200 watts but now

you are making me change my mind about that thought.

  • i like the tape on the cabs

  • GK!!! :D

  • awesome bass sound both those amps 2 seperate cabs. gk for the very lows the ampeg for low mids to the high

  • ...you had the Ampeg on w/o a load plugged in... a big no-no!

  • 02:17 to actually listen to some bass...

  • Were you high? What an annoyin way to speak.

  • Good vid. Thanks!

  • The Ampeg just kicked the GK's butt! :D

  • thanks for pouring your heart in to this comparision test...Nice job of being objective and searching for the truth!!

WE NEED YOUR APPROACH TO NATIONAL AND STATE GOVENMENT...HOW MANY LEGISLATIVE REPRESENTATIVES PUT THIS KIND OF HONEST EFFORT IN TO THIR WORK?

  • GK sounds better in my opinion!

Of course I don't know how the sound could be with other eq or other cabinets... or other connections!

  • Try with SWR, the swr solid state give great punch and growl, i am dissapointed of ampeg, i 've played with some SVT and sounds like crap, with 4x10 and 8x10, direct, without effects and with active bass, i know that some were in bad condition, but after years playing (metal), i prefer SWR, the SM series are better, with tube if you preffer, or workingpro700 @ solid state.

  • I would have liked to see a better comparison between the two amps, but I did like your discussion near the end of this video and appreciate that.

  • not really a fair comparison overall.

    BUT!

dont run tube amps without your speaker cable plugged in. when you switched my heart sank.

myth or not, just good habits to have

  • I'm glad I found this video, because I'm deciding on a new bass amp right now, and my two choices were between an Ampeg and a GK, so this was a rather timely discovery.

But now I'm even more at a loss ._.

  • @TacosAndThongs what sort of sound are you going for? What kind of music do you play?

  • @cyrusmcconnell

Well, I mostly play metal, and I'm hoping for a brighter tone. Something that can be heard playing with the guitar, if that makes sense :T

  • @TacosAndThongs well there is an ultra high option on the ampeg that really brings out a bright tone. I personally don't like the way it sounds but then again im going for a more rounded tone these days. I let my buddy borrow the head for a show recently and he had it sounding super gritty and bright with a fulltone distortion pedal. Honestly I don't think i'll ever get rid of the Ampeg, if you want to be heard get an SVT

  • @cyrusmcconnell

    I see :o

I'm going to try for your friends tone then :3

Thanks for the help, brotato chip!.

  • @TacosAndThongs Try out a Peavey Tour 700 or 450 they are really bright if you EQ them that way and there loud and good price or if that's not your cup of tea and you want like the more modern version of Dave Ellefson's Rust in Peace Bass tone get a hartke LH1000 or 500 they are really good and seriously cheap, they got a preamp tube and if matched with there hydrive cabs are insanely bright.

  • @TacosAndThongs

Do you take them both when you play live?

  • @TacosAndThongs Your amp is very important, but your cab is just as important, if not more in some cases. A head could have 2000W but put through a 1x10, even if it could somehow handle all that wattage, will not have decent dispersion or volume because it's just one speaker and cannot move a lot of air or disperse the energy well. If you want to be heard, use a 4x10 (or more, like an 8x10) or mix like a 1x15 + 2x10/4x10. If you really wanna rock low-end, try a 2x15 or 4x12 cab! I have a 2x15 =)

  • @TacosAndThongs It's got nothing to do with the brightness and everything to do with the MID's. you cant get "brighter" than a guitar, but you should be filling out the lows and mids. Keep the mids boosted, Dont scoop your EQ. It dosent sound awesome by itself, but you'll make everything sound better and fill out the mix with mids.

  • @TacosAndThongs use more mids and a bit of overdrive. use the drive to bring out the highs

  • @TacosAndThongs If you want something that can be heard with a guitar you need a good midrange, the super highs.

  • @TacosAndThongs

    get a sunn

  • @TacosAndThongs

Hi! I bought an Ampeg SVT-7 PRO and it has the "ultra high" and "ultra low" buttons, as mcconnell said, it really brings out a bright tone, the 7 PRO is really powerful with its 1000watts and its cheap, in europe about 700 Euros, i think its much cheaper in the US. The 7 PRO has a tube preamp and a solid state power section. Sorry for my bad english, you should really try the 7 PRO!

  • @TacosAndThongs May I recommend you research Thunderfunk amps. Much nicer tone than GK, Eden or SWR in my opinion, comparable to Aggie 751, but more flexible. Closest solid state amp I can find to the SVT tone. Just not as well-known as most amps.

  • 2:14 into the video and finally a note, Maybe you could have actually played a song in 'sted of tuning up?

  • Anyone tried out the Frudua B600? I heard it really emulates that warm tube tone.

  • It'd be nice to hear some more lows instead of just ringing high notes. You're playing that bass like it's a guitar.

  • Also, I have never heard anyone complain about GK volume wise.

  • You should have eq'd the GK to sound good, not try to emulate the Ampeg. They are both great but have their own sound. Neither is better than the other.

  • nice video, Personally anyone that likes the tube SVT tone should get a Tech 21 RBI in my opinion. Sounds amazing and its a single rack space and not to heavy either. my old head never sounded the same after the tubes were changed.

  • Eheee.. I like the GK better.. THas just me i suppose?

  • I find my G-K to be sterile and brittle compared to a tube amp. Every time I play it I mess with the eq and pedal settings to make it sound how I want. and even then it, as you said, it doesn't respond to my playing the same way my tube head does. I use my G-K for practices since I want my tubes to last as long as possible on my gigging head. Again, thanks for posting this. Cheers.

  • This is a great video. I wish more people would take the time to watch it. I think a better example of SS Vs. Tube would be the G-K 1001RBII to the SVT, at least for over all volume. I know that you needed to be in a quiet environment, but I think you still had a lot to learn about EQing your Ampeg at that time. I find you don't need pedals with tube amps, I can get Over Driven tone by turning up the Gain while leaving the master low and that is great for low volume grit.

  • @79fritzie not trying to be a smartass about this but if you can find a gain knob on that amp, by all means let me know haha. Thats the only thing i feel this amp is missing, but yeah im sure i always need to work on my sound

  • @cyrusmcconnell Sorry I was really tired that day (I was on my GF's account and didn't realize it) I thought it was a CL with vintage silver faceplate. Can't remember what Ampeg calls it right now. I think the amp you have sounds slightly better than the CL, but the VR sounds best at high volume! Merry Christmas and happy new year! Cheers.

  • @cyrusmcconnell and there is your problem excluding there combo amps you bought the head that ampeg makes that doesn't have a gain

  • have you ever had sex with a chick on that leather chair after or during playing her a song? lol.

  • my buddy gets a better and louder sound through an orange tiny terror bass, and it weighs only like, 11 lbs!!! lol

  • @Buhzie15 i dont think you could say the orange gets a better tone, im not saying the svt has a better one but there is no way to judge the sound quality of this video. The ampeg svt series has probably been used to record more albums than any other head ever made. That being said i had the hardest time deciding between an orange and the svt ;-)

  • @cyrusmcconnell true man... they're all great amps though... Just wish the svt series heads didn't weigh as much as an 810 cab...

  • *also

  • alsp why do you bridge the channels

  • @southparkfan1999 if you see the reply about the switches this will make sense, basically i bridge the two channels to round out and fatten the tone. I keep channel one with a flat eq, and the switches set to no ultra high or ultra low and midrange in the middle "normal" position. Then i set channel two up to use the ultra low for a boost on the low frequencies. I dont boost the highs because i have a horn in my cab and a bright sounding bass but the lows really help make a fat tone

  • what are the swiches above the knobs on the ampeg for

  • @southparkfan1999 on channel one there are 3 rocker switches, the one on the far left controls an "ultra low" option which drops your low frequencies even lower. The second controls your midrange, it has 3 settings one for low mids, one for high mids and one for in between the two (normal). The one on the far right allows for "ultra high's" essentially taking your high frequencies higher. Channel two has two switches above it which are the ultra low and ultra high switches for channel one

  • good comperison.

Sometimes you sound like beavis (sorry cant help noticing)

  • Thanks for the video. Very cool. Its videos like this that make me glad there is a YouTube!

  • Ask Jason Newsted how heavy an SVT is... Damn!

  • the problem with ampeg and the new blue line reissue is they dont have the same preamp section as the original blue lines. they fucked up ampeg could not even remake their own amp! they fucked up yet again. my blue line and all vintage blue lines sound way different then the reissues

  • honestly even if the ampeg is pain to move i would use both heads in my rig i would use the ampeg for clean stuff and the gk or any solid state amp for distortion

  • what were you playing, i play a little bit off bass and want to play that it sounds nice, i only know a few tabs :(

  • Hey man just a tip from a fellow 700RB user... To get a more "gig usable" tone out of your GK, don't set the presence and contour so high. Those use really extreme levels of highs and lows that typically fart out cabs. If you want more "sizzle" try cranking your boost and volume and cutting the master volume back a hair, much like on a tube amp.

  • I'm sorry Dude but this video cannot sentence anything! Try to compare something better as solid state like MarkBass amps and something less coloured than Ampeg for the tube amp like SWR.

You just take two sound very, very, very distant from each other! GK is very Dry, on the other hand Ampeg is scooped and it has too many bass frequencies.

I think that the difference between tube and solid state is more complicated.

But I like this video, anyway!

  • @Teobass88 I mean i wont argue your point but these were the amps in my possession at the time so this is why i choose them. I also agree there is much more difference in tube and solid state amps than what i say here but honestly half the reason i made the video is because there isnt much out there in the video world for the svt-vr.

  • @cyrusmcconnell Weel, at this ponit, I can only say GoodWork.

I don't like the tone of Ampeg and GK, I use MarkBass Amp and A.T.S. cabinet, all Italian productions, but I like clean sound. Well, Keep it bass!

    "Support Music, not Rumors" C.Schuldiner

  • @Teobass88

First of all, SWR makes an all tube amp? News to me. Ampeg is colored? All amps are colored.

I've played GK for 5 years now and I wouldn't call them dry at all. If anything, they're very growly. Many people who play Ampeg will only use GK as solid state. Next time you go to a big festival, look at the backline. I guarantee you'll see an Ampeg and a GK backing the Ampeg up.

I think GK and Ampeg are both great companies, I personally like GK a bit better.

  • very helpful thanks!

  • Amazing sound.

  • enjoying the big sir bassline in there

  • just heard some big sir in there

  • you will blow your transformer on the ampeg if you have a open load on it.. even if its on stand by

  • Mate get yourself an Ampeg 8x10 cab to match your head, trust me you will not regret it. I got an SVT2Pro and matching SVT810E and wow.....

you think the head sounds good now, wait till you try it through an 810.

  • To be fair, the Ampeg has a lot more power than the GK. Nothing is going to out-tone an ampeg, but a higher wattage GK like the 1001RB or 2001RB would be more similar in actual output to the ampeg and hold its tone at high volumes better.

  • To be fair, the ampeg has a ton more power than the GK, which will benefit the tone. Nothing is gonna beat an ampeg on tone, but a higher wattage GK like the 1001RB or 2001RB is gonna hold a good tone at higher volume.

  • they are both great heads depending on the tone u want.for a more modern tone id go for the krueger...the ampeg is more of a classic tone...wich i personally love. but of course i grew up in the 90's so i love the tube ampeg jason newsted metallica tone.with the ampeg u really have to push it at high volumes to really get the tubes juiced and get full tone capabilities.

  • I own 2 orig.1969 blue line SVT's w / 2- 8x10 ampeg cab's same year. They are the best sounding tube amps I have ever played on. TUBES 4 THAT NATURAL BALL-Z SOUND THERE'S NOTHING BETTER!!!!!

  • @gypsybloodchild420 everyone who has a blue line says theirs is always a 69... mine is a 69 i can prove it ill post a video in the next week

  • @godofwatt It seems that you are a bit bitter at the fact that I own two 1969 Blue Line Ampeg SVT's with two 8x10 matching cab's. I also own a 1968 Gibson EB-3, 1971 Fender Jazz Bass& a 2004 Fender Corona P.J. Percision Bass I'm 51 and your 29 I've been playing bass around 40yrs. I guess that you need to prove that your shit don't stink. All I can say is that it's great that you own a original 1969 Blue Line Ampeg SVT. BUT I OWN TWO1969 Blue Line Ampeg SVT.

  • Comment removed

  • @godofwatt Just by that name u sound like the god of solid state. As for gypsybloodchild420 I bealive that you do have two original 1969 Blue line Ampeg Svt's because Ive seen ur Pictures and videos on your website. And GOD OF Cock why don't you go suck one , peace out stay jizzy

  • The Ampeg blows the GK away !! No comparison !!! Sell the GK and get a Ampeg 810 American made and you will rock !!! The ampeg just has alot more balls and tone !! Carry in the Ampeg, its worth it.

  • The Ampeg blows the GK away !! No comparison !!! Sell the GK and get a Ampeg 810 American made and you will rock !!! The ampeg just has alot more balls and tone !!

  • how loud is your ampeg? would it be good for bigger venues?

  • @dbassboy94 its great for any venue, outdoor venues when you really need to be loud or large indoor venues. I've never played anywhere that held more than a couple thousand people but i've never had to turn my amp up past half way on the volume.

  • @dbassboy94 Don't bigger venues typically have a PA system?

  • @jaspergeh clubs yes but for arenas you have to bring everything from the PA to the cables and everything in between only thing areas suply is the space to preform and the electricity for your gear

  • @southparkfan1999

Can you repost so this makes some sense?

  • I've done the same comparison at my local store who carries both. For me it is GK all the way but they are really apples and oranges. I can understand why people might like Ampeg's tone more than the GK.

The GK doesn't have the huge lows but it is a real punch machine.

  • i like the GK better... Have been carrying an SVT classic around at my job, i've used it in the studio and its great - if you want the standard bass sound... If you want to head towards the stars, go for the GK!

  • HUGE difference. I am getting my Svt-3 pro tomorrow, and I have an SVT-410HLF waiting for action. Can't wait. My first tube amp, and decent cab.

  • @FrenchBeefCDN same here. I just got an ampeg PR4-10hlf to replace the cabs above and holy jesus is it gravy.

  • is the SVT made in vietnam or korea?

  • @popitn2nd Vietnam, I think.

  • @iloverush123 mine is Korean, im almost positive ampeg made this amp in the US, Korea and Vietnam though. If memory serves me correct they started in the US then moved to Vietnam then to Korea. They may all be rumors but from the research i did its best to stay away from the Vietnam made ones because of multiple manufacturing issues. I was told to find a US one but never could and mine is just dandy!

  • @cyrusmcconnell To my knowledge the only SVT made in the U.S.A. is the Heritage.

  • If you had your SVT running without being plugged in to the cab you were asking for serious trouble. Amps with a tube power section should never be powered on without a load (speaker cab). Output transformers, especially for something like an SVT, are expensive. Kind of like a transmission on a car, where you have to decide if it makes more sense to fix it or just get a whole new one. Your G-K, on the other hand, is fine without a cab.

  • @nosamiam28 It looks like he had it in standby.

  • @nosamiam28 thanks! i was aware of the damage of having it "ON" and not having it plugged into a cab, but from what little knowledge i have from college physics i assumed that if it was on standby that it wouldnt be an issue. My reasoning is that the cab itself obviously needs a power source to produce sound and when i plugged into the cab with the amp on standby i get absolutely no pop or hum. Am i just dumb or do u get what im sayin?

  • @cyrusmcconnell not really, the cab wont be damage instead the amp will be serious damaged

Other notes i think you might not know since you're new with tube amps, tube amps are delicate stuff, you should put your amp in standby for atleast 2 min to warm up the tubes, and 30 second son standby while turning it off, also if you gonna move it wait for it to cool down, and lastly buy new tubes every year and bias the amp correctly.

    :D

  • @kukovrein

Buy tubes every year and bias it correctly?

Why would you want to change the sound of your amp if it sounds perfectly fine? Tubes can last for decades - look up some old Fender or Marshall amps and see how many have original tubes. Tubes in an SVT can get abused as the filaments are jostled around while sitting on top of the 8x10 cab but I can't see sticking to you advice as a general rule for all tube amps in general.

  • I just got my 1975 Carvin B-3000 amp back from their repair shop - cap came lose after 35 years - and it is still a beast. It is point to point SS and has a sound unlike any other SS amp I have ever played. I got it new back then and it was the shit as far as what other players were using. 250w @2ohms. It still has the lifetime warranty.

  • @cyrusmcconnell Yeah, if your Ampeg is in "standby" it is not delievering output so its safe to send in a signal even without a speaker (load) connected to it...by the way -your Ampeg sounds really good

  • @cyrusmcconnell YEah, this is alright, there's no signal being passed through the tubes or output section, I'm sure if you left it on for a very long time with no load (In standby) some damage may occur, but realistically, nothing will happen.

  • I didn't have a speaker cable for my svt once so i used an instrument cable. Sounded awesome until i noticed the tubes were hot enough to light a cigarette!

The amp was never the same :(

  • nice stickers! on the pedals...............
