Good girl. Claire got all the notes to that awkward passage from @ 2:40 to 2:48. I find the passage to be a real brute. Try it sometime. Be alert too that she is an American. Check it out..
Went today to her concert at the University of Miami. What a big disappointment. Only played one Chopin piece! About half of it sounded rushed and unnuanced...At this point it's still OK if the performance is not all that professional, but what is the excuse for only playing a single piece by Chopin? Everyone there wanted to hear at least several Chopin pieces since she won the National Chopin Competition. She just doesn't have the luxury yet of playing fancy with an audience paying a $40 ticket
it's not about how hard a piece is or how fast your hands have to move up and down the piano; it's about how you can make the piece tell a story without words.
@enzo321 I totally agree, I have listened to a load of other pianists play this and none have moved me as much as Claire's rendition. It certainly is like listening to a story sad and happy and a myriad other emotions come through.
I ignore all those people who say she plays too loud, too fast etc.etc. she plays with beautiful dynamic expression and phrasing. It seems everyone has their favourite pianist. She is mine by 10,00 miles. Claire you should have won that competition !!!
Lang Lang was who set this horrible, horrible fashion overreact when plays piano? It shows false. And this movement of hands as mannered and plastic. HORRIBLE!
Another asian pianist discharged prematurely. What a pity. What goes on ? Don't be angry at the judges. They got Wunder and Avdeeva right. I don't think it's politics. If it were, Avaeeva and Wunder wouldn't have won, and a believable reason would have been given for Rina Sudo's premature discharge. It is not stupidity or malice. These are educated people. I believe it is caused by the same type of human frailty that causes competent experienced drivers to have fatal trafic accidents.
Competitions are a joke. The caliber of talent out there is so great, the competition sponsors/judges don't know what to do. It's less about talent and more about politics and control.
Excellent !! I like her legato lines and sense of balance. Towards the end it was somewhat wishy washy. She needs a sense of surprise and perhaps fun play.
Such a beautiful and flawless interpretation. She plays with such sensitivity. I do hope she makes recordings in the future. It's too bad she didn't make it to the finals.
Wow ! Bravo ,Chopin's music style you play very impressive so i think you'll be in the top 3 of the 16th international chopin piano competition ! Good luck Claire Huangci !
i concur with gonzalojoserv's constructive top comment.

i think in the arpeggios and slow parts she could take more the sense of phrases, but remains still one of my favourites renditions.

I didn't like the rubato that much. It was a bit overdone for me. However, all the candenzas were done very beautifully. Great performance!

@gonzalojosevb All Chinese play like this...quite disturbing indeed.

@gonzalojosevb - AGREED! Mostly Asians do that. If she would be still and play, she would conserve her energy. And the arm movements HORRIBLE! LOL
Yeah Lang Lang like Bo Bo is a clown!

@ungava100 Another "Asian" pianist?! She might look like an Asian but she is not an Asian. She has never considered herself an Asian.
Just do her a favor, please don't say she is an Asian.
win081 9 months ago
@win081 so what if she's asian? i am an asian, and asians are equally as talented to all races, maybe more
jockolong 9 months ago
@jockolong Everyone knows Asians have done especially very well in all the international piano or violin competitions. No argument about that.
But for Claire, please, she is NOT an Asian.
In an interview at Koningin Elisabethwedstrijd piano competition last year in Brussels, she said that she has never considered herself an Asian.
In the same interview, she said she love Lady Gaga and British rock group Muse. You tell me how mang Asian classical music pianists love that, LOL!

One of the best 1st Ballad I've heard. So beautiful !
Like Rubinstein said when he heard Pollini in 1960 Chopin Competition, this young pianiste plays better than all members of the jury.

EXCELENTE PIANISTA , PERO EL PIANO QUE TOCA ES PARA ESTUDIAR, NO PARA UNA COMPETENCIA DE ESA MAGNITUD . UN STENWAY O UN FAZZIOLI LE HUBIERAN AYUDADO

Why she didn't play Chopin Etude op.10 no.2 which is much difficult than this?
Etude op.10 no.2 is much difficult to Etude op.10 no.10 and 11 which is used by Yulianna Avdeeva. =)
But still... I like her! the way she plays and her techniques are simply remarkable! :)
salamence47 1 year ago 7
@salamence47 yeah you're right salamence47!!!
I watched her playing etude op.10 no.2 with liszt transcendental etude and stravinsky.
yeaH! etude op.10 no.2 is indeed much difficult to play than the 2 etudes played by Yulianna Avdeeva.
