  • where did u get that engine with smoke?

  • @CessnaN64107 I ordered it through a local model train retailer after choosing it on the MTH web site.

  • It's the first weathered MTH engine i see !!!

    Nice job !!!

Sh'e's not just out of the box, and it's more realistic !

  • @sarsouelle Thanks! weathering a MTH with smoke can be a problem. The "smoke" is actually propylene glycol, and it deposits an oily film over the loco. I normally disable the "smoke" for that reason.

  • where in the dickens could i get one of these except in CN scheme. And how much did it cost?

  • @will77537 It's from the MTH company, and it's around US$450. No CN scheme that I can find...

  • Awesome video. Your videos inspired me to by a Mike as well.

  • i hear that model trains with smoke leave a film of kerosine on the tracks, it that true?

  • You're close... There may be a smoke generator that uses kerosene, but the best I can figure is that the system that seems to be the most common actually uses propylene glycol (like the anti-freeze in your car's radiator). There is very little information available (online), that's the best I can figure. My own tests show there is a deposit and that it's oily.

I don't leave the smoke on all the time and I try to keep the window open when the "smoke" is on.

  • @mwhkelly thanks for the information, this has been really helpful, i'm working on a layout of my own.

  • i saw this video and i knew this one was for me! i just got it, it's a great locomotive!!!! thanks for the inspiration. i have 18" curves and it performs fine - the only issue i am experiencing is a slight squealing of the wheels when it takes the turn, but not a big deal. i will try adding the washers as i am experiencing the same issue sometimes with the turbouts, too.

  • Cool! Glad I could help. I really like the MTH Mikado's slow speed performance, and (when you turn off the sound) how quiet it runs.

  • Thanks for the information!

  • So it should be able to negotiate 18" radius turns right?

  • No problem.

In the remote chance that the front drivers derail, add a washer to the rear truck's spring (the loco will still run fine with the front driver's flange off the rail, but it may short on a point & kick your DCC out),

  • Nice layout! Is this loco able to run on the 17 1/2" radius curve? I ask because the curves on my layout are 18" and I'm looking to purchase one of these locos myself.

  • That's odd, I just checked out the MTH web page for this model (MTH Product Number 80-3134-1) and it lists the minimum radius as 22". I had to "tune" the suspension because it would have trouble getting through some of my turnouts, but there has been no issues on any of the curves. (I needed to add a couple of washers to increase the pressure on the rear (firebox) truck because the front drivers would derail).

  • Wow, how much was that one? I mean it's really detailed, and the sound is great!

  • It cost a fair bit. If you have to ask, you'll have to save up for it. :) Google "MTH trains" for more info.

  • this train is ... ???? DCC - smoke - sound and light ????????

Where do you get it ?

by the ways nice layout! dont see a lot but im sure rest look good!

  • It's made by "MTH" (Mike's Train House) and I got a local model railway shop to order it for me. It cost the same as if I were to order it on-line, so I thought I'd support my local businesses. The loco is actually DC/DCC/DCS (DCS is a control system invented by MTH for their own locos).

Thanks for the compliment! It's only a 4X8 layout, so there really isn't any more than what you can see in the video.

  • Where you get it??

  • Man this piss me off.

    I want that loco!!!

  • What are radius are the curves? I'm wondering because i have an interest in building a 4x8 and I own some larger locomotives and rolling stock that only run on large curves

  • The outside track is about 22", the inside track is about 19 3/4" and the tightest radius is about 17 1/2". I use flextrack, so these figures are approximate.

Some of my larger locos and rolling stock will only run on the outer track, but it depends on the individual item (my Rivarossi Big Boy, for example, will handle 19 3/4" radius with no problems).

  • a beautiful model :)

  • Looks great love that chuff and smoke sync

  • Fantastic! I was supposed to get one of my granddad, but it is to big and low voltage.
