@xxTitanicRocksxx Shout was first published in 1981. What you're reading is an edition with an updated epilogue. The book has been update several times since its first publication.
Imagine having to try to perform but not even being heard over the sound of relentless screaming. Imagine trying to live every day a normal life, but having to avoid intrusive fans who assaulted you, and your spouse, and your children. Being a Beatle was not all it was cracked up to be. Yes it was a great group, but if you had to live with those things every day, always under scrutiny, your entire life under a microscope, you might be unhappy too.
he is the star...its not bitching or complaining. public life is a huge distraction. case in point...do you like just one loudmouthed friend ,,,,imagine 1 billion harrassing a holes running their mouth. and no way to ever get a restraining order. its just life..trauma can be caused by anything. but imagine success given to these anti george simpletons......their little measly attempt wouldnt last a minute...they cant fathom ahead far enuff to see anything.
BTW, Phillip Norman has been taken to task by both McCartney and George Martin for his book about Lennon. Among other things, he claimed that John may have been gay despite there being not the slightest shred of evidence for that. Obviously a very gay Phillip Norman is just projecting.
Phillip Norman makes me physically ill. His book is horribly flawed, not even close to being the best book about them and never was. How dare he insult Ringo by saying he can't tell you the story of what it was like to be a Beatle? What an arrogant fop.
george was a private man ..he grew up he diversified with his music , paul and John had plenty to say about him! he is not complaining at all ...enough is enough..no matter he loved them all ..its that simple
@NeilFraudstrong, I wish George did cure cancer (or somebody did), and I agree with Philip Norman in that Paul keeps (trying to) rewrite their history.
Andy White actually also played on the album version of "P.S. I Love You" on the album version because George Martin thought they needed a tighter session drummer. That is the only Beatles song that features a different drummer.
@rockphotoman True, Andy White did play on the 'Love Me Do' version recorded on 9/4/1962 while Ringo played tamborine. The song was later re-recorded with Ringo playing drums on the album version
@rockphotoman ya thats true..and he also played on Dear Prudence too i think. I was referring to an outsider other than the Beatles coming in and playing drums. Technically your right.
Well i dont think anyone, even the beatles, thought they would be the biggest band in recorded history, so George probably went through a somewhat psychological meltdown through beatles sessions
George was probably slightly regretful that he was bossed around and never got to release half the stuff he wrote- thats all- anyone would be annyoed being bohtered by fans and media nonstop. he doesnt regret the actual music making or anything like that.
"Ringo" fans.... In honor of Ringo's 70th, I hope U will check out my "RINGO"video. It's very retro with Beatleish touches & was done as a labor of love and with the utmost respect for the Fabs. My attempt at putting a little bit of the Beatle spirit out there for Beatle fans. It's also my tribute to George Harrison's slide playing as well as Ringo's unique style.
Phillip Norman is a bit of a twat. His book isn't the greatest tome on the Beatles although at the time it was published, it shed a lot of light in many cloudy areas. But he clearly favors Lennon and almost disregards McCartney's input as being passable ,but calculatingly so (the latter part being correct, perhaps). But even here when he says Ringo doesn't really know what went on in the Beatles is pretty ridiculous. How would PN know more than someone who was actually there?
@kettlezone I don't think he does either. Hearing him say that makes me sick. It's called a point of veiw. Paul, John, George, and Ringo all had a different pair of eyes to view the same situation. If 20 people witness a fight, I assure you, not all 20 will have the exact same story. Paul doesn't re-write hisotry, he tells it how he saw it. Who's to say John or George wasn't wrong? God, I regret buying his book.
well, think about it! he was chased, pursued every single day of his life because of his fantastic amount of talent, same with the other members of the band! he had to live, slave, and look nice with the other three people in the band for photographs, interviews, etc. and didn't really get a break from anyone. everyone was so crazy for the band. would YOU trade your privacy and solitude for the money he got out of it? it was great to have the experience and all, but REALLY now. bitching? no.
4:06 Oh, and you know you self important ignorant jerk? And though I'm kinda sad that George seems to regret the Beatles, it's easy for me to be annoyed about it now sitting at home instead of being in their place, running from fans, reporters, and trying to get a bit of peace. And they've always got that label on them you know? George Harrison: ex-Beatle. It's hard to hold on to yourself when you're forced into a mold like that, and I admire all of them for it.
He was the kindest man.....and the best of the musicians.....I love the Fours, sure, but George always had a special place in my heart...And the first time I saw him was in......1964 !!!!

I really don't why he says Paul "rewrites history"... what does that mean? That he says one thing and then another? Wish that was better explained. Anyone know?
Im from Liverpool and everybody here knows that Paul and John were full of shit and both so phoney .. George was always one of us, George is the Beatle that was down to earth and one of us until the day he died .. George Harrison is the most loved in Liverpool by a mile .. Paul was the polished business man, John was the guy who preached love and never gave a shit about Julian, Ringo was nobody .. George was Liverpool's favourite Beatle ..
@elvisrose1340 do you think that John Lennon really gave a damn about peace and Love? and did any of your older relitives know The Beatles personally??
Im from liverpool mate, and thts a load of poo, you cant speak for a whole city! thats your opinion which is sound, but saying tht everyone here knows lennon n mccartney are phoney haha, its opinions mate. ! they were all four corners of a square! each had there own qualities. So you dont speak for me or the whole city.
What do you think of the comment that Paul "re-writes history" ?
John once said that Paul is the best PR man anybody could ever have. Paul doesn't bitch much in the public eye, unlike John and George. On the contrary, I feel that John could be incredibly self-contradictory, and "re-wrote" history regularly. Read the rolling stone interview from 1971, then read the Playboy interview from 1980. Constantly revising things. Then again, as a Beatle, how would you know to say?
Yeah i'd say the same thing. I think that Paul was actually the only one that didn't feel like ending the beatles. Ringo and George had left the group before John, but they would always come back. For the 3 of them it was time to end the group. But not for Paul, i think he is the one who took it the worse (does that make sense? I'm not english i hope you see what i mean ^^) At the end, Paul was the only one still enjoying being in the beatles...
I like to think Ringo had much more to do other than drinking and, and... smoking! I wanna get high on marijuana, all over the world, even in a perfect world high genius prison escapes had over in '37, maybe '97 (eh, if my logic can upper handing it to you) Don't look a blind horse in it's mouth and don't under stipulate your high-cost demands in USSR! Go pro, get yerself a mobile phone and rock out- all around !! Dude, I know if anyone can do it.... it's you! I said "It's You", fool !!!!
You should try Revolution in the Head by Ian McDonald. It analyzes every song of The Beatles (including the Anthology) and is a biography as well. It helped me appreciate a lot of their songs much better.
Honestly people, quit slamming George for complaining. I'm pretty sure he doesn't "regret" being in the Beatles, he's said he probably wouldn't be where he is if it wasn't for the Beatles. But with all the fame that came with it, and him trying to become someone other than, "A BEATLE" (which is what interviewers are STUCK on) and trying to make a career for himself, it's got to become tiring. If you had the invasion of privacy and struggle that he has, I think you all would be complaining too.
even though i extremely love the beatles, this makes me a little angry, george seems kind've like he regrets being in the beatles. well hell, i would've joined them for you. and i don't think i would've complained just because a lot of people liked my music.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Well thats why Paul and John were and always will be the best beatles. paul still plays their music, and john would too, if he was alive. and they wouldn'tve acted as ridiculous as george did in this interview. he was the quiet and whiny one, and ringos buisy making videos telling his fans not to send him any more fan mail. lol
Im just saying, i dont think he should be complaining about being in the best band in the world, yes, i know publicity must suck ass, but i mean, come on. and how do u understand them, were u friends with them. lol. no, i don't think so.
He wasn't complaining about being in the Beatles, he was talking about the negative side that came with it, who could blame him, press is an awful thing to have to deal with. Frankly with George being one of the four, I think he has the right to complain and we're lucky to have his music. And I didn't lay claim to understand them.
You got to remember people that this was 1988. They were ALL still at that time negative about the Beatles. And George was always the least enthusiastic about them, even when he was in them ! (It was George who wanted to give up touring most in 1966). But a lot of reconcilliation took palce in the 90's during the Anthology and they all started getting positive about it again.
We are lucky to have his music, and i know publicity must suck ass, i get it every time i play a gig, and it does suck, but im just happy that people like our bands music. i think he should just show a little more respect for their band. if john lennon was alive today hed be saying how awesome playing in the beatles was
John Lennon was the most unpredictable of the Beatles so you can't know that. George is the bee's knees, I don't think you understand what he's saying, maybe I don't, but George is George and can say what he likes.
@skint0n0minted It would be shit, i know, but when you are in a band thats as good as the beatles, i don't know how you would think people wouldn't be obsessed with you. I would've been tired of it, yes, but i would never say im getting sick of this, people like us too much. you know what i mean?
@mysteriowc no i get what u r saying. at the end paul was getting controlling, and john having yoko around 24/7 didnt help anything, so i can see why george would be mad, i just wish he seemed a little more happy about the amazing legacy he made.
@strokesday i dont think he regrets it i think it was just a lot of pressure for a young man to deal with and people catigorized him as a beatle for years. Not that the Beatles werent awesome but i think everybody knew that at some point they would end and that George, Ringo, Paul and John were going to have to move on. So it was hard to be considered George Harrison the solo singer as apposed to George the Beatle.
@strokesday It doesn't sound like he regretted being in the beatles; I think he was overwhelmed by and maybe resentful of the fame and the public's extreme obsession with the group. "for someone private to become a part of the Beatles was, for him, a very heavy psychological disaster"
@MARCQWER889 I understand that for sure, the greatest band of all time is bound to receive some public notariaty. Im sure it got stressful, but in this video he comes off very bitter about it. I hope he didn't really mean it that way. He might have just been in a bad mood the day of this interview, but in this video he produces a certain attitude about the beatles and what they went through, and it angers me just a tad, i mean for gods sake, hes a beatle. haha.
whatever you do dont slag ringo man. He doesn't want any of us to write him but he loves us - peace and love man. Best drmmer and hair dresser in the universe man.
George was talented 'In His Own Write' and proved it in the music he wrote after the Bezzleys. RIP
I think George made a great point about The Beatles. It has to be extremely annoying and frustrating to have people think the best thing you have ever done and ever will do in your life happened when you were in your 20's and how nothing else matters except The Beatles. George could have cured cancer, but people would still interview him about The Beatles. I really sympathize with him.
@NeilFraudstrong Yah George actually was more successful after the breakup, but b/c of The Beatles, he was able to be himself afterwards and produce a lot more than he ever could before, it's part of the success that followed with them all, they are still called Beatles, it's how they became famous before making a name for themselves, I admit when I see him I say that's George Harrison but I still see him as a Bealte, it's almost impossible not to be reminded of that era when you see any of them
Ringo was the least talented one. He must feel to this day that his life was a lottery win. Andy White played drums on their first album and single releases.
The only reason Pete Best got the boot was because he refused to do the 'dressage' and become the commodity.
How do you know its a drummer at the door?
They always come in late and knock outta time...
George was a fantastic talent who being younger than these two was always out of confidence.
Andy White played on only one song. The single "Love Me Do" because George Martin did not like Pete Best's playing when they did there first audition. Pete was not a very good drummer - that's it - no conspiracy.
Ringo played on the album version of Love Me Do and all other songs.
OMG. You guys are dumb. George Harrison was the best guitarist and person to walk this earth. Some of the things he said were jokes because thats george and if you cant understand a simple joke then you are a couple of really stupid dumbasses. Anyway the other beatles didnt speak against this and they are very good mates so fuck you.
I bet that George would never have spewed so much hateful language as you do ,even when he was a "naive 20 year old" as he said of himself in this clip.
The author in question did make a lot of mistakes. But I think he's correct in his assessment of George. George was a very private person who had crushing low self-esteem. He was always the "baby of the family" in the Beatles. Wouldn't any of you want to get out from under that?

Blank U are, indeed, an expert on all things pertaining to "low self-esteem". "Crushing" or otherwise. Ur podium is a wheelchair and U preach to a congregation of one. The unintended laughter that u once inspired has now been replaced with a general disgust. The legless cretin who masquerades as a whole man. A wheelchair, that marches before you by a quarter of an hour. Sending people scrambling out of your way to avoid the uncomfortable visage. The Elephant Man of YouTube.
MasterJackAubrey: Or Lardass56; You whined on the "Youtube Scary" video that your mother has epilepsy. You begged for sympathy for her, but make fun of people in wheelchairs. What's up with that?
Its pretty simplistic and shallow to assume that money and fame invariably equals happiness. Money = comfort at best (even millionaires have commited suicide), and people without a penny have been very happy. As for fame, I cant see any advantages to it particularly (it got John shot and George stabbed!). The way I figure it, only an egomaniac or somebody with low self-esteem would actually enjoy or desire fame for its own sake.
Like everything, it depends on how you handle it. Some can some cant. The guy was lucky to be in the right place at the right time. Some make millions and have a wonderful productive happy lives and some cant handle it and complain. George was a complainer.

Dangerous, Old Sport. Vanity would explain 98% of all human history. From childhood to the grave we chase all manner of attention...some of it natures' way of insuring we attract the opposite sex. In point of fact "fame", for men, is a powerful aphrodisiac that serves to attract all kinds of attention. Unfortunately for John and George they also attracted something else. They found out the hard way that their goofy, ersatz spirituality will not stop a knife or bullet.
Lardass (as MasterJackAubrey): Do you think you're profound? Wise perhaps? You are a 14 year old girl who doesn't know what sex she is. You can't even manage to fly under the radar at school. You are an illiterate bitch who needs psychotherapy. You embarrass yourself.
I totally understand where George is coming from. I really don't like how this was phrased; as if he's bitter and old and trying to keep away. Oh get over it.
And what the hell? Paul doesn't rewrite history! He actually WAS a Beatle, man, who the hell are you to say he's lying?! And Ringo doesn't know? wtf?! Just shut up man. You WISH you were some sort of expert. Please.
I totally agree with you. This asshole wrote a crap book about the Beatles where he potrayed Paul as a real fucking idiot, and John as a saint. He clearly hates Paul, so it doesn`t matter what he say`s. It doesn`t mean anything!

Harrison always was a testy character, quite an irritated fellow despite his wealth and "spiritual" attitude.

You should try Revolution in the Head by Ian McDonald. It analyzes every song of The Beatles (including the Anthology) and is a biography as well. It helped me appreciate a lot of their songs much better.

I dont know if Georges book I Me Mine counts as a Beatles book but i'm reading it now and it's amazing.
thebeatledude 2 years ago 2
Honestly people, quit slamming George for complaining. I'm pretty sure he doesn't "regret" being in the Beatles, he's said he probably wouldn't be where he is if it wasn't for the Beatles. But with all the fame that came with it, and him trying to become someone other than, "A BEATLE" (which is what interviewers are STUCK on) and trying to make a career for himself, it's got to become tiring. If you had the invasion of privacy and struggle that he has, I think you all would be complaining too.
kelmac72 2 years ago 2
even though i extremely love the beatles, this makes me a little angry, george seems kind've like he regrets being in the beatles. well hell, i would've joined them for you. and i don't think i would've complained just because a lot of people liked my music.
strokesday 2 years ago
Its amazing how big stars complain.
George was so lucky to be in the right place at the right time.
Same for Paul, John, and Ringo or any Star.
They all were very lucky.
But they all complain!

Well thats why Paul and John were and always will be the best beatles. paul still plays their music, and john would too, if he was alive. and they wouldn'tve acted as ridiculous as george did in this interview. he was the quiet and whiny one, and ringos buisy making videos telling his fans not to send him any more fan mail. lol
strokesday 2 years ago
You just don't understand George. Or John. Or Paul. Or Ringo.
IamEleanorRigby 2 years ago
Im just saying, i dont think he should be complaining about being in the best band in the world, yes, i know publicity must suck ass, but i mean, come on. and how do u understand them, were u friends with them. lol. no, i don't think so.
strokesday 2 years ago
He wasn't complaining about being in the Beatles, he was talking about the negative side that came with it, who could blame him, press is an awful thing to have to deal with. Frankly with George being one of the four, I think he has the right to complain and we're lucky to have his music. And I didn't lay claim to understand them.
IamEleanorRigby 2 years ago 3
You got to remember people that this was 1988. They were ALL still at that time negative about the Beatles. And George was always the least enthusiastic about them, even when he was in them ! (It was George who wanted to give up touring most in 1966). But a lot of reconcilliation took palce in the 90's during the Anthology and they all started getting positive about it again.
ipolson 2 years ago 2
We are lucky to have his music, and i know publicity must suck ass, i get it every time i play a gig, and it does suck, but im just happy that people like our bands music. i think he should just show a little more respect for their band. if john lennon was alive today hed be saying how awesome playing in the beatles was
strokesday 2 years ago
John Lennon was the most unpredictable of the Beatles so you can't know that. George is the bee's knees, I don't think you understand what he's saying, maybe I don't, but George is George and can say what he likes.

@strokesday well the fact that they never could walk down a street or get some peace it would be shit
skint0n0minted 1 year ago
@skint0n0minted It would be shit, i know, but when you are in a band thats as good as the beatles, i don't know how you would think people wouldn't be obsessed with you. I would've been tired of it, yes, but i would never say im getting sick of this, people like us too much. you know what i mean?
strokesday 1 year ago
I dont think he so much regrets being in the Beatles as much as the overwhelming and often times, suffocating and relentless pressure of fame.
NonStopRocker 1 year ago
@strokesday I guess when you are in a band with control freaks it does this to you.. I am just saying.
mysteriowc 1 year ago
@mysteriowc no i get what u r saying. at the end paul was getting controlling, and john having yoko around 24/7 didnt help anything, so i can see why george would be mad, i just wish he seemed a little more happy about the amazing legacy he made.
strokesday 1 year ago
@strokesday i dont think he regrets it i think it was just a lot of pressure for a young man to deal with and people catigorized him as a beatle for years. Not that the Beatles werent awesome but i think everybody knew that at some point they would end and that George, Ringo, Paul and John were going to have to move on. So it was hard to be considered George Harrison the solo singer as apposed to George the Beatle.
Alex04041000 1 year ago
@strokesday It doesn't sound like he regretted being in the beatles; I think he was overwhelmed by and maybe resentful of the fame and the public's extreme obsession with the group. "for someone private to become a part of the Beatles was, for him, a very heavy psychological disaster"
MARCQWER889 10 months ago
@MARCQWER889 I understand that for sure, the greatest band of all time is bound to receive some public notariaty. Im sure it got stressful, but in this video he comes off very bitter about it. I hope he didn't really mean it that way. He might have just been in a bad mood the day of this interview, but in this video he produces a certain attitude about the beatles and what they went through, and it angers me just a tad, i mean for gods sake, hes a beatle. haha.

Okay, well Phillip >> Ringo has talked about the history of The Beatles, ALOT, same with Paul, ALOT. Look at the anthology!

NeilFraudstrong 3 years ago 30

George lives through some cracking tunes
lecturerob 3 years ago
Andy White played on only one song. The single "Love Me Do" because George Martin did not like Pete Best's playing when they did there first audition. Pete was not a very good drummer - that's it - no conspiracy.
Ringo played on the album version of Love Me Do and all other songs.

OMG. You guys are dumb. George Harrison was the best guitarist and person to walk this earth. Some of the things he said were jokes because thats george and if you cant understand a simple joke then you are a couple of really stupid dumbasses. Anyway the other beatles didnt speak against this and they are very good mates so fuck you.

MasterJackAubrey 4 years ago
MasterJackAubrey: Or Lardass56; You whined on the "Youtube Scary" video that your mother has epilepsy. You begged for sympathy for her, but make fun of people in wheelchairs. What's up with that?
Lardasskiller50 4 years ago 4
Its pretty simplistic and shallow to assume that money and fame invariably equals happiness. Money = comfort at best (even millionaires have commited suicide), and people without a penny have been very happy. As for fame, I cant see any advantages to it particularly (it got John shot and George stabbed!). The way I figure it, only an egomaniac or somebody with low self-esteem would actually enjoy or desire fame for its own sake.
DangerousBastard 4 years ago

Please.
partytimex42 4 years ago 4
I totally agree with you. This asshole wrote a crap book about the Beatles where he potrayed Paul as a real fucking idiot, and John as a saint. He clearly hates Paul, so it doesn`t matter what he say`s. It doesn`t mean anything!
