Mary Ramsey has such a beautiful voice and she is such a talented fiddler!! She was very under-appreciated when she had the thankless task of filling the shoes of the legendary Natalie Merchant in 10000 Maniacs. This work she did on the side with John Lombardo was wonderful.
I love Mary!!!!!!!! Listen to A Room for Everything on Love Among the Ruins 10,000 Maniacs album Mary Ramsey is incredible I love her! She's cute on this video.
I had the pleasure of seeing John and Mary live in April 1992 at "Cockstock" in Columbia, SC. I spoke with them both after the show, and they were so friendly and down to earth. John even ran back to his car and gave me printed copies of their lyrics. -Trim
Great song. This features some impressive guitar work from Rob Buck, whom unfortunately I can't really see in this video (but Jerry Augustyniak can be seen on drums).
Great to see this! Love John and Mary. I was friends with one of the production crew that shot this video, so luckily I still have a pristine VHS copy of it, but I gotta go find it!
This is terrific. Great group, great tune, great singing and great musicianship. It doesn't get any better than this, just different. The video is good too. Thanks for posting this!
From a blog on "Group of Four" advocate Frank Stamm's myspace page:
"An undiscovered gem for fans of the 10,000 Maniacs are those little-heard John and Mary CDs. They continue the folky experiments of the Wishing-Chair-era Maniacs, a time before the band dedicated themselves to pop hits."
I am glad Frank Stamm likes these albums, but it seems a bit backhanded to call these songs "experiments" when, judging from this one, it sounds fully-fledged, realized, developed, whatever synonym you want to use, and it is very honest and musically pleasing. You don't have to be a scientist to listen to this music.
NCDave-Great video-personal to me!I was John's neighbor growing up in Lakewood NY. He'd watch out for kids in the neighborhood - "counseled" some bullies who never bothered us again - great guy! Billy Carpenter, the seated musician, was my high school buddy-excellent musician-sustained a bad neck injury-partially paralyzed-awesome seeing him play! I am going to look him up after 20 years of no contact (my bad). Was this on MTV or just on your local program? Lt Col "Super Dave" Anderson, USAF
Amazing!!What a great big surprise. I believe that not even J&M have the clip in such a great quality. Fantastic, one of my fave John&Mary songs, thanks tons for bringing this up to surface, nickelcitydave.
Thank you!!! Love John and Mary...this song is wonderful ,I just wish I could find other recordings. I love her viola playing. Please!!! Hunt up more! All the best, Briar
where did you get this??? it is so rare to find much of anything by john lombardo (original 10,000 maniacs member) and mary ramsey (the singer who replaced natalie merchant). i saw (and met a few times) them perform as a duo. they once opened for warren zevon (RIP) and also for 10,000 maniacs before natalie left the group. this is a a great record, they are nice people, and mary is as cute in person as on video. thanks for posting!
I used to produce a local music show for Buffalo television. We showed this video during our first season back in '95. It's always been one of my favorites. As far as I know, this is their only music video. I am glad to hear they are back in the studio recording a new disc.
Innocence Mission brought me here. I kinda like this John and Mary band.

John Lombardo had such a way with a melody. Cotton Alley, Tension (Makes a Tangle) and Everyone a Puzzle Lover are a few of my favorites.

Utterly badass. Brings back memories of being in high school, walking through the woods and thinking about this music.

Saw 10,000 with Mary Ramsey. Liked them better than Natlie. The group was composed of super musicians. Mary and John have several CD's.
