@jellytroid true but that adds feeling to his playing. Get as precise and technical as you like but you'll end up like jeff loomis. Amazing but stiff with no feeling. Like a robot. Jimi Hendrix is a prime example of feeling and amazing "sloppy" playing
Why would some one compare Kirk Hammett to Greg Howe? lol
Okay, you Metallica elitist. I'd like to see Hammett improvise over a
bVImaj7-VII7-IIImaj7-V7- I maj7 (Bmaj7-D7-Gmaj7-Bb7-Emaj7) Oh damn! Harmonic deviations wtf is this shit? Here this will be easier for him B5-D5-G5-Bb5-E5. ;D
Hammett is awesome, but people give him too much credit....I have the feeling some one is going to compare Hammett to Govan...god have mercy on their soul.
shit hammett is where he is because of dave mustaine and james hetfield. Thats the money explanation and about skill, none for him. Right place in the right time with the right guys.
@HillaryHitler finally, people who know enough to agree with me! Hammett is so overrated, overrated is an understatement when you look at Howe, he's in a whole 'nother universe!
not saying i like kirks playing but im pretty sure he wasnt aiming for the virtuoso type playing so he is not as good as some of these guys. don't rip on kirk to make you feel better about your own playing. kirk is like the guitarist every one has to rip on because he make a shit load of money by playing the pentatonic scale while using a wah. If he sucks so much lets see if you can pull that off.
@kazekagereckzilla No disrespect to Satriani because I love his playing but Howe is in another league. I have to assume the people making these comparisons are not players or if they are players they are at a level of playing where they cannot understand the complexities and advanced playing abilities of people like Greg Howe.
@musicman102357 It's preference because in my opinion Joe Satriani is far superior to Greg Howe, but not in an insulting way, please do not take it like that. I's just to me Joe is better, but to each his own eh?
@kazekagereckzilla I was going to suggest that you attempt to play a Greg Howe song but after listening to you play guitar I know that would be impossible.
I am normally not a prick however you are in no position to judge who is a better player based on your level of guitar skills. You really don’t have a clue as to why Howe would be considered by most advanced players to be an overall better player. Once again I love Satriani but Howe’s music is much more difficult to play.
@musicman102357 Yes, rudeness is unnecessary, and as far as difficulty I was not judging difficulty levels. I was posting my opinion on musicality and listening pleasure. Greg has a more staccato style and Joe a legato, the difficulty is based primarily on playing style. So, there is no need to be rude or insulting, but in my opinion of musical skill, not shred ability or anything that involves playing, I feel Joe is better. Please try to refrain from unnecessary insults.ROCK ON. ROCK ON.
@kazekagereckzilla Of Course if your guitar skills and knowledge is way too low you'll find Joe Satriani better because his stuff is mostly based on the same overused guitar licks and legato runs, his melody is great but it just doesn't cut it for me, unlike Greg Howe whom guitar licks could take you WEEKS just to comprehend the techniques and scales involved and he still manages to keep it SWEET as Heck, Just listen to his albums..As you acquire more knowledge Satriani won't be such a great deal
@Jhey172 Trust me I more than understand it's just my preference you should calm down and "but it just doesn't cut it for me," is exactly what I'm talking about it's all preference dude I do listen to a lot of Greg Howe I have like three or four of his CD's and I understand the massive theory construct behind him and I envy him for that, but it just isn't for me I'm more about feeling when it comes o guitar not complexity; Greg Howe is amazing and I revere him as an amazing guitarist. ROCK ON.
@Jhey172 So, let's all just enjoy the music and agree to disagree lol. We're all going to have our own preferences and just because I don't use it doesn't mean I don't know it, it's just not what I want to do. So go kick some ass and keep being amazing. Just remember to each his own, but there are ignorant people who need to learn, I'm not one of them, but I accept your beliefs and views. Maybe Greg is better in the end it doesn't matter, I like Joe and that's just me. ROCK ON.
@kazekagereckzilla they both do things with that instrument that other guitar players can't even fathom let alone surpass over which one is "better" I think neither of them surpass each other it's an apples and oranges thing, a "different strokes thing" now the Kirk Hammett dude that's a no brain Hammett sucks :P idc how cool the solo from One is Hammett is gay
@MartyFriedmanRulez66 And that is my point, no one is better everyone just has preferences. And that's too bad about Kirk he was taught by Joe, but oh well they can't all be home runs. ROCK ON.
i personally like satriani better but i would say howe is better than vai. and im a steve vai fan. i jus tthink howe's music is more melodic and fun to listen to.

@trimetaler Yeah, dude. Kirk Hammett isn't that great anyway. He just throws pentatonic and a few random-ass notes in to amess of power chords that end up sounding like every other Metallica track. Greg Howe rapes.
yeah but he keeps repeating himself. He has created his own cliches.. He has gotten so lame and predictable. Man, what a huge fall for Vai, from passion and warfare to this.
He is awesome and one of the coolest guys you'll ever meet. I took lessons from him at his house for about a year and a half in the early 90's. Glad to see he's doing so well.
with all due respect for govan and howe, lane would still upstage them (he would upstage everybody.) i think govan, howe, and holdsworth would be a much better option.
Howe is absolutely the best not just guitarist, but best all-around musician and songwriter that I have ever heard in my life.Hell, take the two albums he did with Kotzen as an example. Now don't get me wrong, Richie is a hell of a guitar player-but every song Kotzen wrote kind of sucks, and every song Greg wrote kicks hardcore ass.He doesn't get even anywhere close to the kind of credit that he deserves for his efforts.
hey pongman, i see that you like Greg alot but you don't need to diss Richie. And Greg probably definitely doesn't get enough credit (and neither does Richie), but saying his songs all suck? Come on, you go write some stuff. You don't need to voice your opinion by being a bastard about it.
in fact he needs a hair band to mute his strings while tapping. if you played guitar seryously, you would probably know that such a band cannot mask a wrong fretted/articulated note
he plays a lot of tapping licks which are actually impossible to play cleanly without using it to mute the strings, most of the time if you'll look closely the hairband is behind the nut (not affecting anything)
sorry joeywrightman, if your logic was true, the piano would have never been invented, or the instrument would have been shunned by musicians universally. Why? Because every note on a piano has a mechanical string mute.
Some tapping parts, and indeed, Greg's entire
use of the technique, is hinged around being able to smoothly swap between tap and pick, the hairband simply serves a useful musical purpose for the man's immense technical grasp
What's this crap about Howe not having a good enough tone???!!!! All guitar gods of the 80's and 90's still swear by his skill, tone and musicianship. Ask Satch, Vai, Timmons, Battencourt, Kotzen, Friedman and keep adding your fav players...They'll tell you.

@aliveandkickino1 is right its a John Suhr Classic.
They come with H/S/S p/up config and also have a locking nut if requested.
No way thats a Fender,(Jhey172) the Fender you are talking about is nothing like this.Look closer
petiethepitt 2 years ago 2
No,Suhr has many Strat and Tele style bodied guitars.and Greg owns at least 8,you can see on his site.
Suhr Pro series S/1,2,3,4, are Strat style with H/S/S config.S/5,6, Strat style with H/H/ config and floating trem.
Suhr Classic are also strat style bodies with many p/up config @ trems.
Suhr Classic T are all Tele style bodies.
Like I said Suhr makes MANY Fender style models.

hey pongman, i see that you like Greg alot but you don't need to diss Richie. And Greg probably definitely doesn't get enough credit (and neither does Richie), but saying his songs all suck? Come on, you go write some stuff. You don't need to voice your opinion by being a bastard about it.

Greg Howe has got to be the most overrated player ever. The guy needs a hair band to cover up his sloppiness.
joeywrightman 3 years ago
in fact he needs a hair band to mute his strings while tapping. if you played guitar seryously, you would probably know that such a band cannot mask a wrong fretted/articulated note
Misie3k 3 years ago 2
he plays a lot of tapping licks which are actually impossible to play cleanly without using it to mute the strings, most of the time if you'll look closely the hairband is behind the nut (not affecting anything)

sorry joeywrightman, if your logic was true, the piano would have never been invented, or the instrument would have been shunned by musicians universally. Why? Because every note on a piano has a mechanical string mute.
Some tapping parts, and indeed, Greg's entire
use of the technique, is hinged around being able to smoothly swap between tap and pick, the hairband simply serves a useful musical purpose for the man's immense technical grasp
of the instrument.
