What if you do not know the name of the person receiving the e-mail?
Most of the e-mails sent back and forth between the departments where I work begin with:
"Hi,
Could you please provide....etc"
because it is not know if they are being sent to a group or an individual.
And "To whom it may concern" seems wrong since we send them to the same group(s) every day.

@tycoonassassin If you want to begin with an informal "hi," it should look like this:
Hi.
Could you please provide....

Fantastic video!
I have always begun emails with "Hi, John, I'm leaving you." It always felt awkward. I should have gone with my instincts and dropped the second comma. Thanks.

My personal favorite and pet peeve for email greeting punctuation is three exclamation marks,
Hi John!!!
