Vitaly Kaloyev held Peter Nielsen responsible for his family deaths in aircraft. He stabbed Nielsen to death at his Kloten home, near Zürich, on 24 February 2004.
Fact is that these accidents happen, despite the thousands of cubic miles of airspace they have to manouvre. The odds of a collision are increased by herding aircraft into aerial lanes or "airways", which is better for controllers, but not so good when airways intersect and separation has to be maintained. The other problem is that neither TCAS nor radar is foolproof; they both have tolerances, so the obvious solution is for a multilaterally accepted protocol to action upon alerts.
This really happened, and that controller guy did get killed for trying to stop the crash I feel so sorry for those would died there and other who died in many more crashes
@ayazd3 yep, police should protect him. But he was a witness. And headchiefs decided to make him as a guilty!!! This father was a muslim...... BUt he was suprressed after the crash:((( and he sorried after Peter Nilson killling. May be he became mad:(
This is strange ... but ... now he is a minister...
@TheNinjanordundor the controller guy got killed becuase a person on that plane was a family member to a other person so the other person killed the controller guy for killing the family memeber
@MrWati25 No, pilots should have followed TCAS instead of ATC. Its pilots responsibility to always follow what TCAS says even if controller tells him to do opposite. That ATC companys maintenance which shutted down many systems and made radar works slower made his job impossible, he was completely innocent.
@Pvjinflight Redundant, I said the same thing. ATC has the overall say because the have the big picture of their area of interest. Thats why the pilots checked with him to confirm after getting contradictory info from TCAS. Humans make errors, not computers, computers do as they are told. Peter should have known and foresee what TCAS was doing if you understand how the system works. The two planes tried to avoid their own collision by communicating with each other.
@MrWati25 If you have read / watched ACI episode about this crash you would know that ATC systems were not working properly at all because of maintenance. First warning systems did not work, and Peter could not handle traffic from one screen like normally, so he had to be on 2 screens same time which is ofc impossible, so there was not only maintenance but also less controllers than there should have been to handle all that traffic.
He did his best in completely impossible situation.
@MrWati25 Also radar updating was slower because of that maintenance job.
Its still pilot error which caused this accident. Its standard procedure that pilots never trust ATC over TCAS. Too bad that it didnt seem to be so in Russia.
@Pvjinflight I don't think it's the pilots fault, it's noone's fault. The plane was telling the pilots to pull up but the atc told them to desend. But the atc didn't know that the other plane was decending too. People just didn't know which thing to believe.
@TheNinjanordundor Well russian pilots did not follow common procedure, but yeah I can still understand it as it may be hard to ignore ATC´s voice and believe what robotic voice from system says, and I dont know how they were taught in their training as some standards might have been different in Russia.
Schuld haben in einem der Lotse der gefehlt hat , dann das Technik Team welche die Technik im Zentrum lahm legten und zum dritten der Co Pilot von der DHL Maschine der scheisen war !
I'm just a private pilot and an inexperianced one at that, but if I got contradictory instructions like that and he was telling me to expedite (ie, collision iminent), I wouldn't climb or descend. I'd turn behind the other guy, then deal with the nav error and controller later. It wouldn't be perfect, particularly if I was the guy with the right of way, but it would still be safer. Any pilots out there who agree or disagree?
trust your instruments over tower. this guy made a mistake by telling the one to descend, that puts the plane descending through the flight level of the on coming aircraft, you climb away, not try and dodge in front of them. thats the thing about aviation, when bad decisions are made, the consequences are huge. very little grey area.
@Turyervoriai Yes unfortunately he did, due to a lack of taking responsibility by the Swiss aircontroll organisation and the media. They thought it was nescesary to conclude only 1 man was responsible for this accident, Peter Nielson, before the results of the investigation came out. So fuck the media and the swiss aircontroll. The murderer went psycho after loosing his family and followed the media conclusions.
The real reason of the accident wasn't from the air traffic controller but a missunderstanding in the cockpits voice computer thingy along with the pilots, both planes telling them to descend.
@R87A Sorry, you are not right here. That's a question< who is 12 year old. I offer you to stop this senseless discussion, started by stupid replies from both sides. Ok?
@IchBinFedda They were only following orders. These people are dead because of that control tower person. But still. I guess he never saw it coming either.
that is so sad. next time control tower tells them to do somthing. do 100 people a favour. listen. all my love out to those pilots and the people on board those planes =(.
@MegaPaperproductions this crash happened because they listened to the control tower. It changed how tcas, and control towers function if a line (speaking) with both planes is available controller has priority if one plane can not be reached for whatever reason, the controller will tell the other plane to listen to tcas.
as for the controller in this incident he unfortunately was murdered by a family member of one of the victims on the Russian plane.
Airplanes WOULD be much more secure than any other means of transport if there wasn't human incompetence and greed, companies overloading workers like that controller and maintenance personnel just to get their aircrafts airborne at any costs as quick as possible to show their "efficiency" and not lose money.
And for what I saw in a documentary, the girl's father found her body intact miraculously...
The worst of it all is that this controller was demanded to control two radars at a time and after this happening, he refused to keep on working and kept himself indoors at home due to the trauma. However, a vitim girl's father went over his home and killed him.
RIP for those children, pilots and for this man who was overloaded with another one's duty... what makes flying mortal is nothing but businessmen's greed and incompetence.
