Dick is 74. He,s on the road again after beating cancer for the 3rd time.Damn near got him this last time.Even at 74 I doubt if there are many who can shred like he does. He,s doing an electric acoustic tour with his son Jimmy right now-mostly west coast & up into Canada.
Was this shot at Gabe's Oasis in Iowa city, IA!? If so then I was there. I only ask because of the exit to the rear of the stage and the stickers plastered everywhere!
your right, i don't know how you picked that up from this bad video but i think i can see it now. wouldn't have notice if u hadn't pointed it out. how did u see that?? but i'm right, it is a lefty axe but strung backwards.
haha actually i noticed on a higher quality vid...pretty cool how he does it...yes I play, just started getting into surf stuff though...its my new phase...my last phase was Ratt/Dokken/Autograph type stuff lol...you play too?
No kidding. wow. I think the late, great Albert King played the same way. I guess its not that different if thats how you learned...but its still unreal.
I must agree The Surfaris did indeed move the surfin' music sound ahead and helped cross into the mainstream hits. But even today Dick still plays gigs. He not only can play the guitar but is very accomplished many other instruments.
yeah it's actually dick dale, but for some reason it's just not authentic... It sounds like any cover band in L.A. doing surf music. He should make it more old school. Fender amp, and an old slingerland drum kit.
it's because your watching it on video instead of in person. When you are right in front of the stage at one of his shows you can feel the power and force he plays with
Dick Dale sounding like a cover band doing surf music in LA? Dick Dale was the dude who started the whole surfin' music seen. It was Dick who did it first. All the other surf bands came along and copied his sound/style. He can and never be anything but who he is, the godfather of surf guitar
This is "Pipeline".....I used to try learning it on the piano & I didn't know back then, but I was playing it too slow.....my mom thought it was hilarious..... but it's an awesome song!
It's funny reading you guys argue over whether or not this is misirlou...It so obviously is not. But then again most of you probably think all reggae sounds the same too.
it is all right there in the tital he starts with Pipeline and then goes to Surf Beat which is the name of the song he plays in the second part of it. And DonPaps everyone has the right to like what they want the best but instrumentally Jimi could not do what Dick can do that is why he is the one who looked up to Dick as sort of A father figure
Right -- both are easy to pick out. Surf Beat is the first cut from his first and best album, Surfer's Choice and, until Misirlou got a new life through use in movies, was his signature instrumental.
It's a little bit of a lot of things. Certainly it starts off with a riff from Pipeline, then it jumps into Let's Go Trippin' and then into a rather pipeline-esqe riff on the low E and A strings, and then off in some entirely different direction for a while. I agree, though, that it surely is not Miserlou.
people it's not either song. Miserlou is the song that they used for the theme in pulp fiction. pipeline was written by the Chantays, Dick Dale wrote a song that sounded like it called Let's go Trippin'. This is also is not this song. Sadly I don't know what it is though.
Dick's grandpa used to sing Miserlou to him back when he was A kid the intensity he plays it with just feflects his music comming from the power of the ocean and nature which is what he bases his music on
while I wish I had the ability to write songs and play them the way you do I'm jealous of you everybody listen to this girls stuff she is really good and check out her band Daisy Grenades
you can compare him to hendrix in that hendrix called him and herbert sumlin his favorite guitarists of all time. And this is Pipeline... not Miserlou
Check out the Pashuns as well" Surf Nazis Must Die" video, if you like Dick Dale you will love them. I didnt know Dick dale was left handed either crudbud.
This is a twisted dialog ... I'm talking about turning the strings and what u can do with or without that. And cool Hendrix learned from him, and probably from others, and I myself didn't reinvent the art of playing the guitar, but in my very humble opinion, Hendrix was much more resourceful than Dale, and I'm not saying that this is not good. Musically, I don't think it's something I'd compare, like someone saying that Satriani is better than Hendrix or Steve Vai better than Paco de Lucia.
