ahaha if two people were having this kind of fight while I was singing this song, I wouldn't be able to hit the high notes either--not to say that i can hit the high notes anyway. Guys. Kristin has a Masters in Opera, which means that she would of course have studied one of the most famous operas in the world--she's just acting. I'm sure if she was not able to hit the high notes or didn't understand this aria, she wouldn't have done it.
(After having read some of the comments:) I thought this was great fun. Okay, some disrespect to the original seriousness of the opera, but a great use of the repeated notes for comic gestures. And I say this as someone who is an opera purist. Didn't we used to enjoy the Bugs Bunny cartoons like "Wabbit of Seville" after all?
Too bad she and Madeline Kahn couldn't have done stuff together with their comedy and their singing. That would have been worth the price of admission.
OK. Seriously? I'm an Opera Singer, I know the Queen of the Night aria as any of us do, what it means, what she's supposed to sing and where. It's a TV show, of course they're using it out of context. They're using comedic timing for the high F's and high C's. And for many of the people commenting on this aria, I would LOVE to see half of you hit a high F while goofing around on a set. Chenowith's forte are character voices on Broadway. Leave it be and just either laugh or don't. She's fine.
Such a bad accent and she obviously didn't understand the sense and the purport of this aria. It's almost some sort of ridiculous comedy series. And she's insecure with the high notes. Sorry, but bad performance, the audience doesn't get the furious anger of the queen of the night in that aria. Other singers do much much better.
@miesermogelvogel the point is that she doesnt give the best cause that agent there is making her nervous and then also shes destracted by aldo and his girlfriend fighting. so its supposed to sound off, but its clear she has the voice to sing the song in context, the point is its not in context.
@RionPhotography This is just actin' it is okay to have some fun with the opera sometimes... Haven't you hear about the comdic opera? There are even some vocal trainning for Basses (Buffo Basso) and alto (or Mezzo) to do all of those vocal jokes.
I can't believe the jerks who are critiquing Kristen's rendition of this aria. We all know how smart and clever and anal you all are. She's not trying to be the Queen of The Night. She's just camping up the aria. It's a comedy routine. Extremely well done. Why don't you all just go take a poop and chill out. Enjoy it for what it is.
@incredulousG3 she does take opera seriously. That's what she studied. She was even accepted in the fancy opera school I forget the name of it but it's well known, I believe she name's it in her book.
@remyfacade she took it seriously when she attended OCU, the name of the school you're trying to think of. If she still took it seriously, she'd do performances/ recitals of operatic literature. Instead, the only time she sings opera is in a shitty one season sitcom. I'm fine with the fact that she chose the more profitable route of musical theater, it's just a waste of talent in my opinion. A voice type like Chenoweth's is one of the rarest a soprano can have.
@incredulousG3 No not OCU. I cant forget that name that's my school. The one I'm talking about I think it is in PA. Just because she doesn't do recitals doesn't mean she doesn't take it serious. She still practice it. I just think she realized she had way more to offer than just opera, and she was right. if she would have stayed on her original path we might not know who she is today. There's alot of people who started off as opera singers we wouldn't know if they continued.
@remyfacade The school you're thinking of is the Academy of Vocal Arts. It's a private institution that you are paid to attend if you are accepted. It's one of the topmost honors in the opera world. I didn't know however if she was actually accepted or was just there to audition for it, when instead she auditioned for Broadway and got on that route.
@skitzo429 It is not terrible. The first "ich"-laut isn't good (a "sh" which is sometimes accidentally substituted to carry better), plus two diphthongs that get a bit American (which is understandable bc this is a comedic scene). That is all. Other than that it is fine. In all likelihood she never actually sang this professionally, and this scene is more a comedic thing.
I can't really blame you though. It's one of the biggest coloratura pedestal arias in repertoire. One mistake = Armageddon...
@longliveclassicmusic she pronounced 'kocht in' as 'coach-tin,' which is really just shocking from a singer that has a music degree, all singers take diction classes. I seriously doubt she was doing that for comic effect, this was just a television comedy, average americans dont have any idea what propper opera diction is, or care.
@skitzo429 She sang a tall, pure open O vowel, no "oa" diphthong about it! She let a teeny bit more air escape on the ach-laut. Very minor. Like you said, it's a television comedy. It is easy when you're singing to make minor mistakes you don't realize. One of my voice instructors who has sang Carmen for New York City Opera still pays for vocal coaching because SHE does stuff without realizing it.
Lol at some of you. The way she sang it was the way she INTENDED to sing it. It was done on purpose. Do you REALLY think that someone who has a MAJOR in Opera and was offered one of the MOST prestigious opera scholarships EVER, would not pronounce words right if it wasn't on purpose? I don't think so. Lordy B.
@operamexican look operamexican she wasn't being completely serious about it, that was the whole idea. Besides, the tempo was a lot faster than the original aria, so how is she supposed to hit the high F at that speed? she was mainly acting not operaticly singing. She didn't even quite hit the high F, she sounded a bit flat. But it was a comedy. So just try to understand.
It's actually not particularly difficult if you got the high notes, the triplets later in the aria are more difficult and they are all more normal soprano tessitura. The coloratura in the first aria of the queen of the night is much more difficult.
I've been looking for this... for ages.

I thought it was brilliant. I must say that it definitely had both comedy and opera elements, whether they "go together" or not. It works

The German diction is surprisingly terrible for someone with legitimate classical singing credentials. The first pass of Fs were flat, also.
