Actually, it was in an old commercial advertising Australia as a holiday destination with Paul Hogan. He actually says something like "We'll throw another shrimp on the barbie for you." But yeah, we call them prawns! I don't know why that came about!

@clairecuttie actually shrimp and prawns are both correct, they are different food items. A prawn is larger then a shrimp so in America what they call 'jumbo shrimp' is a prawn, shrimp are the really small ones.
