Intrepidsinger - good call on The Band influence. One of the really great things about Elton (then, when he could) is the quality of the album packaging. I will never be able to separate these songs from the wonderful pictures that come with the album. You probably all know what I'm talking about., sitting around with the lyric booklet and listening to the album. I was, what, 12? Now I'm 50 and have a daughter- 9. We almost named her Amoreena - no lie.
GREAT post! Thanks for sharing. Wonderful to hear the evolution from demo to final. One of their finest for sure. One can hear The Band's influence in EJ & BT's early work - but even with the such inspriations, it was with the Tumbleweed album that they started to really cultivate a sound & direction. Why TC is not ranked high with other "concept albums" is a mystery, but from Caleb's opening guitar riff on Ballad of a Well Known Gun, this album envelops the listener like few others.
I play this on Piano for my drinking buddies , LOL they still dont know its Sir Elton , they always bash on how Sir Elton is a homosexual , ugh why cant they see past that and listen to his GREAT music??? Some people lol
Grew up on this album, imagined myself there in the studio with bernie, elton and the band, a timeless melding of old west imagery and poignant chording and melody. Maybe..just maybe, elton and bernie's best song.
my favorite album from Elton John. He likes to use the Maj7th and diminished chords on his early stuff. It really adds a wonderful sound to the chords. If you read his music he often will keep the same right hand chord and use the bass notes with his left hand to add tension... wonderful! I love hearing these demos. It makes them easier to learn by ear too. His vocal phrasing is so awesome on the early recordings, lol
Sure does. Although a few songs have much more elaborate sound. But I bought Tumbleweed Connection a month ago, and I now know it forwards and backwards. Every song is memorable. No duds!
Isn't this exquisite Duncan, I like it as much as the studio version. You can hear the notes in every chord, and that's what appeals to me most in these demos I think. -Ron
I have to agree with you , often in the studio versions the raw chords are somewhat masked by the layering of other instruments. This gives you an impression of just how great the piece is , to sound fantastic with just piano and vocals,
Where can i download an MP3 of this?? i love it!

The most American sounding album he did. Has a very southern feel. Love this era in his career.

I've always thought Elton John is at his best when it's just him and a piano.

For those who understand the relationship between the Captain and the brown dirt cowboy and the results of that relationship, this take says volumes.

O_o
I don't think this has Maj7th or Dim chords in it though.
Minors and 7ths maybe.

Chord structure to My Father's Gun is virtually identical to Your Song.
Great songs, but interesting how Elton even recycles his own songs.
