I don't understand this as one of the representatives of the labour party has been an advocate for the cause. The compassionate use of cannabis outlines all of the major issues that are tied to the negative side of prohibition. Cannabis is NOT a drug that is harmful to one if used in the right way. It has been proven again and again to help work for cancer patients, muscular dystrophy patients, AIDS patients, MS patients and many more besides! This Act was put to the Dail already its a sad day

I don't understand how Mr. Gilmore is arrogant enough to believe that the drugs policies which have failed since the 1950s and 60s and have only served to worsen addiction problems etc will somehow work once Labour come to power. It shows a total disconnect with the normal Irish people and a complete ignorance of the issue. Cigarette smoking has gone down in the developed world over the past decades but cocaine use has gone up - there is NO correlation between illegality and usage IT'S NOT HARD!

Also i agree with what he said about gangs and violence, i think if he researched the topic he would in fact find that decriminalisation / legalisation will take a huge source of revenue away from these gangs. The question called for opinion on legalising cannabis, not drugs in general. Mr. Gilmore's response described the chaotic problelms most ordinarily linked to drugs such as heroin. Cannabis does not create these problems, otherwise there would be no legitacy to medicinal use, as there is. Continued prohibition will do nothing to protect young people but keep supply in the hands of criminals who do not ask for ID, and through whom access to other unregulated drugs will be beyond our control.

Prohibition has failed and unenforceable. For every 100 units of cannabis smoked how many are criminalised? Probably less than 1% and for every time someone is arrested how often do they smoke and are arrested? Less than 1% again.

2. It's not a necessity to live. Choice yes but you'll live without it, I'd be more concerned over disability allowance getting reduced, gay marraige etc. Things that actually make a big difference to a persons life rather than them being stoned or not.

@solidus784 How do you know it isn't as serious or have you done both? Reports show it is fact as serious yes, you take longer time to make a decision therefore making slower responses. It's dangerous to drive while tired so yes of course it's quite serious to drive while high.. Yes it 'can' be used to treat depression but that is as medical and controlled use. People who develop depression from cannabis do so from using it for recreational use, two different things. I'm well educated, thanks.
