Umm, yes they are both cops. Both Deputy Sheriffs and Police Officers are "Peace Officers" and attend the same law enforcement academy as prescribed by California POST. The fact that Deputies typically have control over the county jails and provide court security does not mean they are not cops. They patrol unincorporated areas of their respective county and make arrests just as any other city Police Officer. The term "cop" generally refers to any law enforcement entity.

I know how they train and that they both get the same POST certificate etc. The problem being that if someone calls them a SC cop then the general public assumes that it is a SCPD officer falling in the pool. or assume what ever else good or bad happens that a Deputy does for that matter. A santa cruz cop did not fall in the pool it was a Deputy. SCPD doesnt want credit or discredid it doesnt deserve the same as the SCSO

I was in the Marines and everyone calls the military the Army.. I didnt want to be called a soilder. I was a Marine. Police and Deputies are the same but different. Just like the military. call a cop a cop and a deputy a deputy.
