I don't think they are trying to be anyone in particular. Simply the styles of the time.

For example, at the time of the Nirvana unplugged episode, several grunge bands did the same thing with the same look.

The Glam band of the 80s could have been any number of bands popular at the time. Jimi Hednrix could easily have been Iron Butterfly. Fun to speculate tho.
